Chapter Four

Evangeline’s POV

After a night of tossing and turning, I rolled over and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I sighed, finally getting out of bed. I went to the bathroom and freshened up for the day, bounding down the stairs, I stopped on the last step, hearing chatter coming from the kitchen. I walked over and saw everyone in there. "Mija, Happy 18th birthday", my mom said, rushing over to hug me. I smiled sheepishly as everyone else joined in to say happy birthday. I felt like prey being stalked by a predator. I looked over to find Lucien staring at me. He averted his gaze quickly and walked outside. I frowned, "Was he upset at me for causing that argument between him and Vanessa?" I thought. I'll just apologize later when I see him at my birthday banquet. Today was about me. "Happy birthday my Cattelya", my dad said. Coming inside the door, he handed me a bouquet of flowers before kissing my forehead. "Thanks papa" I said, beaming at him, "grab something to eat and then start getting ready. We have to start making our way to the main pack house" he said, as his eyes glazed over from the mind link. I nodded and turned to head up the stairs. Feeling compelled to look behind me, I turned back to see Lucien with Vanessa talking and laughing. He turned to look at me, his smile dying down a bit, with a gleam in his eye I couldn't quite make sense of. I turned back around, running up the stairs, opening my link to hear the rest of the pack singing me happy birthday. Smiling bitterly, I thought about how I would soon have to leave this place. I reached my room and threw on a more professional outfit, since today was my birthday, I would attend the meeting today with my father, my mother and Auggie would be there as well, it was just a meeting to talk about the regulations and what packs were coming to celebrate my birthday, every pack invited different packs onto their territory to see if people would find their mates it was a tradition amongst us all. I got dressed in a pink and white houndstooth skirt set with a white mock neck bodysuit underneath I paired it with some nude pumps and gold accessories, I clamped my hair up with a hair clip and pulled some hair out in the front and headed downstairs to meet my parents.

Not paying attention, I accidentally bumped into Luicen who was walking past the stairs. I stumbled, and he quickly caught me. I gasped, looking up, my heart pounding in my chest, so loudly I was sure we could both hear it. We stared at each other for a minute, his eyes darkening for a moment before letting me go quickly trying to sidestep me and continue his venture. I sighed "Look, I know you're upset with me because I caused an argument between you and Vanessa, I apologize i didn't mean to stir up any trouble", I said quickly, stepping in front of him to prevent him from walking away. When he didn’t reply I continued

"Are you going to mark her as your chosen mate?" I asked, he stiffened at the question, “It’s none of you’re business.” he said coldly, glaring down at me, before I could say anything more, he side stepped and walked to Auggie’s room, stopping at the door he replied “see you later at your birthday party” and walked in closing the door without even looking back I just nodded even though he couldn’t see me, forming my lips into a thin line, and headed out the door.

I walked down the path meeting with my parents, and we made our way to the pack house. As we walked in, it was bustling with energy, the cooks were preparing my birthday banquet food, warriors were running out to go do their shifts, it was full of life here. I smiled and greeted everyone as we walked past, making our way up to the boardroom.

"Good evening alpha" Beta Reynolds greeted my father bearing his neck out of respect. My father nodded his head and entered the room with us behind him, sitting down at the table. As he waited for us to get comfortable, he made one of the omegas bring us something to drink. "Okay Cattelya, as you know after your birthday, I will be stepping down as Alpha and passing it onto your brother August" he says, shifting his eyes from me to Auggie, "Aug, I want you to know I'm so proud of you and am honored to pass on my duties to you, you have worked diligently and trained hard. Cattelya, you are to be 18 by midnight, meaning you will possibly find your mate during your party. As hard as it is, you will leave with your mate the following day. If you don't find him, you will remain here with your brother and help out where you are needed until you do come across your fated mate". We both nodded, taking everything in. He continued to ramble on about the packs that would be coming, and the line-up for speeches My family had to give before twelve hit to welcome in my wolf. as the meeting came to an end, I couldn't help but notice how elated my dad looked as he spoke. He had been reigning for a long time. And now he would be able to finally have some peace and be home more.

Not long after the meeting ended, I was being pulled left in right in preparation for my birthday banquet. I was exhausted by the time I was pulling on my dress, Rose walked in with a makeup trolley beaming at me, ready to take me as her victim. I stifled a groan, knowing i would be here for some hours. "Evie, you look so hot. Your mate will want to rip your clothes off tonight" She said, smirking after profusely beating my face to her preference. "Rose, ew" I crinkled my nose at her in disgust, don't get me wrong. I've been with other male wolves growing up but never did anything past kissing. Laughing at me, Rose turns and grabs a mirror before putting it in my view to show me how I looked. I beamed at the girl in the mirror. "Rose, you did so good, I love it" I said breathlessly, taking it all in. She'd given me a smokey eye look and paired it with brown lip liner and brown glossy lip, the base was minimal, just the way I liked it. I didn't like much makeup, but on certain occasions I allowed her to do whatever she seemed fit best. "Are you excited about meeting your wolf tonight? And your mate? What do you think your wolf will look like?" Rose threw questions at me as she helped me fix my hair. "Slow down Rose, Yes. I'm excited. I can't wait. I have no idea how she's going to look, but I'm praying the moon goddess has me in her favor and gives me a good-looking wolf, the mate part I'm not so sure. I'm not ready to leave this place". My voice cracking at the end of my sentence, I could feel a lump in my throat forming at the thought of leaving my people behind. Rose stopped and turned me around fanning my eyes, "Don't cry, you're gonna mess up my hard work" she joked, trying to lighten the mood. "In all seriousness, you are not leaving anything behind, you will still have all of us no matter where you are." She said pulling me into a hug "When the time comes, go fulfill what the Moon goddess has put you here for and be happy, we will all be cheering you on" she continued, I nodded my head and turned back so she can finish my hair. It's time to face reality.
