Chapter 20: Threads of Control

705 Words
--- The file was over 300 megabytes. Encrypted. Eun-ha sat at her desk in the dim dorm light, Ji-hye asleep in the next bed. She stared at the zipped folder on her screen, her fingers hovering over the trackpad. She didn’t know who had sent it. Only that it felt like the next step in something much larger than her. Jae-won answered on the second ring. “I’m here. What is it?” “I got something. From someone. An anonymous file—labeled ‘Dalen records.’” “Don’t open it yet,” he said immediately. “I’ll come over.” “It’s too late,” she whispered. “I already did.” --- The files were organized by year. Folders within folders. Each one labeled: “Strategic Recruitment Candidates.” “Academic Influence Monitoring.” “Brand Leverage—Personal Cases.” Each document was a case profile. Each profile was a student. She opened one at random. A boy from a tech family. Recruited via a recommendation. Notes about his political ties. Another: a girl from a military background. “Likely to shift public perception positively,” one line read. And then — Her name. HAN EUN-HA > Origin: Mid-tier Seoul district Parents: Grocery worker + retired factory laborer Personality: Composed. Competitive. Poor family—ideal contrast for controlled publicity push. Objective: Strategic placement for organic friction with Seo Jae-won. Project code: Phoenix Trial She felt her throat close. Her name wasn’t just on the list. It was part of a plan. --- Jae-won arrived in ten minutes, breathless. She showed him the file. He scrolled through in silence. His hands started to shake. “This wasn’t just my father,” he said. “This was a program.” She turned to him. “They placed me here like a pawn. To test how far they could control you.” His jaw locked. “I’m going to burn it all down.” Eun-ha closed the laptop. “No. We’re going to outsmart them.” He blinked. “You want to go public?” “No. That’s what they want — chaos. Sympathy. Control. They’ll spin it before it lands.” She looked him dead in the eye. “We build our own stage. And we flip the story.” --- The next day, Eun-ha requested a private meeting with the Dean. She brought her file. When he opened it, he went pale. “This... This isn’t from the school,” he stammered. “But it was on your server.” “I never saw this. These are internal corporate files. We don’t recruit like this.” “You don’t,” she said. “But Dalen does. And they’ve been shaping your student body for years.” He looked stunned. “What are you going to do?” “I’m going to give you a chance to do the right thing. Before someone else leaks it.” --- Meanwhile, Jae-won met with Madam Seo. He didn’t ask for a drink. Didn’t take off his coat. He just tossed the file on the marble table. She glanced at it, flipped through a few pages, then met his eyes. “So. You finally see how deep it goes.” “You knew.” She didn’t deny it. “You used her,” he said, voice low. “You used me.” “I protected you,” she replied. “From a life without power. From choosing someone who might’ve destroyed you.” “She made me,” he said. “Not the other way around.” Madam Seo stared at him for a long moment. And then said, “Then protect her. But be smart. Because this isn’t about love anymore.” --- That night, Eun-ha stood outside her dorm window and looked out at the university skyline. All the buildings, all the light, all the students laughing below — none of them knew how controlled it all had been. She was supposed to be a prop. Instead, she became the plot twist. Her phone buzzed. JAE-WON: Whatever comes next — we write the ending. She smiled, just a little. Because now, finally, they had the script. --- End of Chapter 20 [To Be Continued...]
