It came in a matte black envelope. Hand-delivered.
Inside: a letterhead embossed in silver. The emblem of the JYN Foundation — one of the most powerful private tech funds in the world.
And a contract.
> “Dear Ms. Han,
We believe your work with The Witness Table has the potential to scale globally. We invite you to lead a new multi-million dollar initiative — supported, distributed, and directed through JYN Global Solutions.”
At the bottom: an offer amount too big to ignore.
And a list of conditions.
Eun-ha read it twice.
Then again.
And again.
And then she saw it — buried in clause 8.2:
> “All affiliated materials, campaigns, and narratives must align with JYN’s communications and global partnerships policy.”
Meaning: control.
Meaning: they wanted her voice, but they wanted to polish it first.
Meaning: they wanted to own the parts of her that hurt.
She met with Jae-won that night, the letter spread across their tiny kitchen table.
He read the clause. Then looked at her.
“They want the brand,” he said.
“They want the story,” she corrected. “But without the sharp edges.”
He tapped the contract. “Without the reason the story matters.”
The next day, she met with the JYN rep. In a tower lined with glass.
They offered coffee. Smiles. Words like “impact,” “amplify,” and “audience reach.”
Then finally:
“You’ve built something powerful. We just want to help scale it.”
She leaned forward.
“You mean soften it.”
They didn’t answer.
She stood.
“I didn’t survive all of that just to become a mascot for a version of myself that never bled.”
Back at home, she drafted a new blog entry for The Witness Table:
> “Sometimes opportunity wears a crown. Sometimes it brings a leash.
I’m not here for volume. I’m here for truth.
I don’t need my work to be palatable. I need it to be permanent.”
She didn’t name the foundation.
But the message was heard.
Loudly.
Later that night, Jae-won sat beside her in the dark.
“They’ll keep coming,” he said. “With bigger numbers. Softer hands.”
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“And you’ll keep saying no?”
She nodded.
“Until I find someone who wants to fund change, not rebrand it.”
He smiled.
“That’s why I’ll always love you.”
She leaned into him, whispering:
“That’s why I don’t need them to.”
