Chapter 67

1177 Words
"I should have suspected from the start," said Chloe ruefully. "Could it be that he came to Karfis & Vin to monitor the situation? Did he deliberately approach Lea and me to get important information about Karfis & Vin?" Chloe then looked like she was remembering something. "He also came to Karfis & Vin repeatedly to facilitate communication with their men?" she said. Emmeline sighed. "It's not impossible that he did come for all that." "Oh, my God. I'm sorry, Emmeline. I'm not sensitive enough to recognize this danger." Chloe again let her thoughts wander. "You're right. Things broke out like crazy when you were in Italy. Ever since Waylon came along. Since then big surprising things have happened. If they used to move slowly and quietly by spreading rumors about us and influencing the miners, now they move frontally. They enter our company's internal territory." Emmeline was silent. Her gaze was vacant, as if she was remembering something. "Corbin's right," Emmeline sighed. "If they couldn't cause harm and trouble by carrying out their actions back then, it's not impossible that they would cause problems on the production side. And now they have done that. Oh, my goodness." Emmeline closed her eyes. Chloe looked at Emmy sympathetically. "Corbin ever said anything like that to you?" Emmeline nodded her head. "At dinner, in front of my mom and dad." "Oh, his instincts are really sharp. If only someone like him could stay by your side forever," Chloe said lightly, born of considerations that seemed logical from the flow of their conversation. Emmeline looked at her swiftly. Chloe was taken aback by the quick look, but as she stared questioningly and cluelessly, Emmeline who didn't want to talk about it any further then said, "We're done here. Let's go. We still have a lot of work to do." "Oh, okay." Chloe nodded obediently and followed Emmeline. They were still in the middle of their stride when Emmeline's cell phone rang. "Wait a minute, Chloe," Emmeline said as she picked up her cell phone. She looked at her cell phone screen, and found a business associate calling her. "You go straight to the car. Wait for me there. I want to pick up this call first." "Okay." Chloe nodded again obediently. Still in the same place, Emmeline talked for a while with her business associate. Emmeline felt there was no need to rush, so she responded to everything her business associate said calmly, not in the slightest rush. The conversation went on for a bit longer, and it was only after everything they needed to say had been properly conveyed that Emmeline ended the call. Emmeline hung up at that point, and just as she was putting her phone in her bag she heard a female voice say, "I told Waylon to come out the other side so he doesn't follow us, Corbin. Sorry if his presence bothered you." Emmeline felt her ears piqued at the sound of Corbin's name ringing in her ears again and she turned to face the direction of the voice. She was shocked. Corbin was walking with a woman. They had just come out of a turn behind Emmeline. Corbin was surprised. Emmeline froze. The hand of the woman Emmeline didn't recognize was wrapped around Corbin's arm so affectionately. Then the woman's cell phone rang and she checked it. "Waylon again. He asked me to hurry to get to the car. Corbin, I know it's very rude that I invite you to come with me but I had to make our meeting finish early. And now I have to leave you, because my mom really can't wait for me to come home. Thank you for everything." The woman lightly kissed one side of Corbin's cheek. Emmeline almost fell over seeing it. Corbin did not expect he would get that treatment. But the woman seemed unconcerned. She, Olivia, said, "I enjoyed the meeting. I'll call you later. See you later." She let go of her hand and smiled and then walked away. Corbin was still staring at Emmeline in silence, while Emmeline had felt tremors all over her body. She felt unsteady, and that's why she turned around and hurriedly walked to leave the place. "Emmeline! Emmeline!" Corbin strode quickly to catch up with Emmeline, and it only took a few steps before he could grab Emmeline's hand and tell her to stop. Emmeline's body was right against a wall at that moment. Corbin grabbed one of Emmeline's hands and purposely kept her from running. "Why did you just leave?" said Corbin. "There's something important I want to tell you. This is important information. Listen. Someone from Silas HA, Howard Silas's underling named Waylon Ledger is on his way to destroy your company as well as you. He has good enough access to monitor your company, because he's close to Lea as well as Chloe. Emmeline, you have to be careful." Emmeline fell silent with a roaring breath at that. She was still shaking and also pale. She looked at Corbin but said nothing. "Emmeline, did you hear me? Did you pay attention to what I said?" Emmeline gasped. She nodded quickly after that. "Y-yes. I heard you. Yes, I know." Emmeline closed her eyes as she caught her breath. "Emmy, are you okay?" Corbin's other hand touched the edge of the hair above Emmeline's forehead and stroked it gently. Emmeline held Corbin's hand. Then lower it. She also released her other hand from Corbin's grasp. "I have to go." Emmeline tried to walk again. "Emmeline! What's wrong with you?" Corbin held her back. Emmy returned to her position. They stare at each other. They both were silent. "The person you just saw was Olivia Silas Ashbluff. Howard's daughter. We met at the airport. It's from her that I know everything," Corbin said slowly after that. Emmeline was still silent at the time. The two of them were still staring at each other. Emmeline swallowed heavily. It was just then that Chloe Levine arrived. "O-oh, what's this?" Chloe asked, finding Emmeline apparently with Corbin. "Sorry, Emmy took so long, and didn't follow me to the car, so I came back here," Chloe said. Her gaze seemed pleased to see Corbin's presence there. "Am I disturbing you two?" Emmeline again let go of Corbin's hand, pushing the man back away from her, then she hurried off while tugging on Chloe's hand, "Let's go." "Uh, wait a minute, Emmy! There's Corbin here. We need to talk to him, right? Co-Corbin, how are you?" Emmeline had pulled Chloe away by then, though Chloe was still looking at Corbin with her arms still waving at him. But she couldn't do anything, because Emmeline didn't want to stop at all and Chloe could only grumble, "Emmy, what's wrong with you? Look, Corbin is still looking at us. After waiting for some time he's finally back here. He can help us with many things. Emmy! Emmy! Are you not listening to what I'm saying? Stop dragging me! Emmy, oh my God." ***
