Chapter 14

The tension passed. When Lea came, she who knew nothing and still didn't realize anything showed her trademark cheerful demeanor, making it easier for the three people she approached to hide what was happening. Emmeline didn't know if she should be sad or grateful at that moment, but her sister's insensitivity and naivety had prevented her from being critical, at a time when Emmeline herself was also in need of some time to calm down. Emmeline left the two men she was with in annoyance. Following Lea who went inside to get the camera, because she wanted to take a group photo. "I'll take the camera, Emmy, you don't have to bother," said Lea. She said Emmy's face looked tired, and she added, "I promise it won't be long. We're just going to take a quick photo. Ah, how come we all forgot to take a photo together earlier." Emmeline stood stiffly. "Okay. I'll wait for you here." It was only a few moments before Lea came back out with the camera, and they actually took a photo together, just like Lea wanted. Not only together, but photos were also taken for each couple. Darren was with Lea, and Corbin was with Emmeline. Although each of them—besides Lea of course—had to hide their stiffness over the little commotion that had occurred, the photo session was well accomplished. Lea said a spoiled farewell to Darren, and the man, casting a cursory glance at Corbin and Emmeline, then got into his car and drove away. "I'm waiting for you inside, Emmeline," Lea said, smiling, touching her sister's shoulder for a moment, then leaving her with Corbin. "Why would she wait for me?" sighed Emmeline. Corbin shifted his gaze from Lea who had passed to Emmeline. "You calm down. She said you looked tired. She'd be sure to quickly tell you to rest." Emmeline still looked worried, even though Corbin had said that, and it made Corbin respond again. "Come in. I guarantee nothing will happen. Just turn on your phone and you won't have to worry." Corbin said that as he got into his car. Emmeline still didn't understand those words. "Why should I turn on my phone? Corbin?" Corbin did not give any answer. He waved his hand lightly and drove the car. Emmeline sighed softly. The car had passed. Emmy looked at it blankly, then decided to go inside. Her steps were unsteady as she stared at the shimmering light of the night lights scattered around her, like the sparkling stars she could gaze at without lifting her head to the sky. Elderville-Bryxton was so beautiful that night. Emmeline had no idea what message the universe was trying to send with that scene, while she felt an anxiety that made her feel as if she was being pulled out of reality. She felt like she was in a dream, where she was the player in the dream, and she was half in control of it, but not completely. Everything is too complicated and strange to be called reality. Like a lucid dream that unfortunately she didn't get while she was sleeping. Emmeline closed the front door of her house. No one was seen in the vestibule. Emmy continued into her room and closed the door. She sighed for a moment before then headed over to the dressing table to look in the mirror. No. Not just in the mirror, but daydreaming, while staring at her reflection in the mirror with a blank stare. There was a knock on the door. Emmeline was taken aback for a moment. "It's me, Emmy." "Ah, come on in, Lea." "Hey," a smile crossed Lea's face as she walked in to Emmy. "I brought you chamomile tea. You need to relax for a while, and I can't quite understand why you look so tense. Dinner's over. You brought an amazing lover, and what a great way things are. What else do you think?" Emmeline accepted the tea from Lea and drank it, paying close attention to what Lea had to say. An amazing lover. Emmeline couldn't help but hear those words. "Oh my gosh. I need to go to the restroom. Emmy, I'm going to use your bathroom," said Lea suddenly. Emmy of course let it. She turned back to the mirror, teacup in hand. The girl smiled silly a moment later, remembering what Lea had just said. Lea was still in the bathroom when Emmeline's cell phone rang. Corbin Valsecchi called her. "What?" sighed Emmeline. The girl immediately picked up the phone, and shot Corbin a sharp question, "What's the matter? Why did you call me? Lea's here." "That's why I called. Is she near you?" Emmeline frowned and was surprised. "No. She's in the bathroom." "Are you in your room?" The question seemed increasingly strange to Emmeline, but she still answered in the affirmative. "Why do you want to know?" "Get into your bed. Hide your phone, and use wireless earbuds to listen to me. Keep your hair down to cover it up, and be calm." "Oh?" Emmeline raised her eyebrows swiftly, and after a few brief seconds, she understood what Corbin meant. Maybe Corbin thought Lea would ask a few questions about him, which Emmeline was starting to think about too, and if that was true then Emmeline would have a hard time answering those questions alone. Emmeline rushed into bed, following Corbin's direction. Her heart beat faster for a moment, but she tried to control it. Lea, seen coming out of the bathroom, was slightly surprised to find Emmy had climbed into bed. But with a mischievous smile, Lea leaned over to the other side of Emmy's bed, and dropped her body onto Emmy's side, then pinched her sister's nose. "Are you that tired?" Lea asked. "Come on. I'm sure you are too. Not only I was busy working all day, but also you," said Emmy. The earbuds were attached to her ear. Corbin, still holding on and of course hearing everything she said. Emmeline kept her head slightly away from Lea so that Lea wouldn't know what she was doing, and luckily Lea didn't suspect anything. Lea gave a faint smile then, and said after a while, with a vacant stare, "I'm glad to see you with Corbin. He seems like a nice guy. And I—oh yeah, I want to apologize for Darren's attitude at dinner, er—Darren might throw in some rather sharp questions or statements. But trust me! He certainly doesn't mean anything bad, Emmy. We're all just tired from today's work. I guess that's the reason. But you know? That's how I got to know that your lover is a person who is able to be calm, and to control himself well." Emmeline smiled simply. Feelings of pity rose in her heart. Lea's innocence, coupled with high trust in Darren ... Emmeline now doubted whether it was comparable to what was in Darren's heart. Emmy shouldn't have gone to the trouble of devising a scenario with Corbin, if Darren hadn't suddenly asked her about everything from the past. What's the important point behind it? Darren had pressed Emmeline. The past, however, is something that can be buried. Emmeline, looked back at Lea, and the girl was still slightly defending Darren. Emmeline kept an eye on her, and as the seconds passed the more Emmy felt the greater Lea's feelings for Darren. Emmeline looked away. She decided not to back down. The difference between the past and the future was clear to Emmeline, ever since Darren's appearance on her birthday as Lea's boyfriend, and this time, Emmeline was going to make it clear to Darren too. "Now tell me something about Corbin," Lea said next. "How do you know Corbin?" "Ah?" Emmeline gasped. ***
