Chapter 2- The Job

1112 Words
The sun had just begun to rise over Chicago, pitching a faint light over the buzzing city. Motorists blared their horns impatiently in traffic as citizens went about their daily activities. At the Chicago Police Department, officers moved with intent determination, going about their morning routines. Like a colony of bees, the station was already a hive of activities; phones ringing and radios crackling. In the center of it all, Chief Robert Thompson stood tall, his presence commanding respect. He was a seasoned veteran, his gray hair and weathered face testament to years of service. He watched as officers gathered around, ready for the morning briefing. "Alright, everyone, listen up," Chief Thompson began, his voice cutting through the noise. "I want to commend each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication. We have made some significant strides in the fight against crime, and it's because of your efforts. Do well to keep it up." There was a murmur of appreciation from the assembled officers. Elena stood near the back, her expression nonchalant as she munched on an apple. Her partner Marcus, quirked a brow at attitude, earning him an eye roll and a shrug in return. "But we can't rest on our laurels," Thompson continued. "There's still a lot of work to be done, and we need to stay vigilant. Crime doesn't take a day off, and neither can we." He paused, his gaze sweeping over the room. "You may all return to your duty positions. Macari, Reed, my office, now!" Elena and Marcus exchanged looks, their curiosity piqued at the sudden want of attention. As the rest of the officers filed out the room, they made to Robert's. "Any idea what this is all about?" Elena asked Marcus, clapping hand with a colleague of hers. "I am just as clueless as you are." He replied, with a tired sigh. "I do hope it is something I can handle, I don't want to start the week drained already." She huffed, pulling open the door to the chief's office. "Chief." They greeted, acknowledging their boss with a salute. Thompson gestured for them to take their seats. He waited until they were settled, before he began speaking. "I have a special assignment for you two and it involves the Rossi family." The room was as silent as a graveyard as Elena and Marcus shared a confused look at each other. The Rossi family was one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the city. Although taking them down would be a major victory but, it wasn't as easy as it seemed. They are power hungry humans who would go to any extent to get what they wanted. "I have recently been monitoring their activities, but we need more solid proof to bring them down. You must be wondering why I chose you both, it's because I couldn't find any other better for the job. Elena? You are going undercover and Marcus, will be your only contact. This is meant to remain discreet, just the three of us and no fourthear." Thompson continued. Elena nodded even though her mind jolted with anxiety. The task at hand was a risky one, one she hasn't done before, one she wasn't sure if she'd pull off as expected. With a mind racing with possibilities, she asked. "What is the plan?" "Good. You need to get close to Nico as he is the key to this whole operation. If you can get him to trust you, we might just be able to get enough evidence to bring down the organization" Marcus looked concerned. "Chief, you know how dangerous this is. If her cover gets blown..." "I know there are risks," Robert replied, his gaze steady. "But Elena is our best shot. She has proven herself worthy of it time and time again." Elena felt a swell of certainty flood through her veins. How she was going to pull this off, was foreign to her yet, she was willing to give it her best shot. "I am not sure how all of these will span out in the end, but it's something I can handle chief. I am ready." She could see that Marcus wasn't settled with the whole idea but, there was nothing to be done about it. For them, a job tasked was a job done. "I am impressed Elena," He said nodding. "I have set you up with a new identity and cover story. You'll be working at one of their front businesses, be sure to make an application for the position of a bartender later at Rossi's bar. Your point of contact for now will be Marcus, but we will keep communication to a bare minimum to avoid any suspicion." "Sure chief." Elena affirmed his message. "This contains everything you need to know about your cover, study it carefully as you start tomorrow." He handed her file. Elena took the file, feeling the laden of the job ahead. She glanced at Marcus, whose expression wore nothing but concern. "Any questions? Marcus?" Robert asked, looking from one to the other. "None chief, I'll be sure to come seek for clarity if any does arise." Marcus responded. "Be careful out there," Robert said, his tone softer. "I am counting on you, we all are." "I won’t let you down, Chief." She replied, determination burning through her eyes. As they left the briefing room, Elena felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. The stakes were high, and the looming danger afore her was real. "I am really unsettled about this," Marcus voiced his concern on reaching their office. "What if something goes wrong? I get that this is an important job for everyone of us but, we should also weigh the pros and cons of it." He added thoughtfully. Elena sighed, dropping the file on her desk. "I understand your fear Marcus, I really do. I myself don't know how we, I, am going to pull this off but, it is our duty. We took an oath remember? I'll be fine, I just have to make sure I am careful." Slouching into her chair, she reflected on how life could be unpredictable. One minute you are just living it and the next, you are being tossed like ships on waves. She had no idea what to do yet but she has to make sure the Rossi's didn't see her coming. Outside, the city of Chicago was waking up, its boulevard filled with the pledge of a new day. But for Elena Macari, it was the beginning of a mission that would test her limits and challenge her in ways she had never imagined.
