My engagement night was supposed to be perfect. Everyone said that as the room filled with laughter and music and soft golden light. There were crystal lights hanging from the ceiling like stars making everything warm and nice.
Everything looked great like it was all planned out. There were flowers around the room, soft music playing and people talking quietly. Important people from the business world were there looking fancy and happy. From the outside it looked like a dream come true.. Sometimes dreams can hide something bad underneath.
I was standing on the stage with Damian, my hand in his. He was holding my hand tight which made me feel better. There were cameras flashing, glasses clinking and people talking loudly. Everyone was happy and celebrating around us. This was what I had been working towards. This was what I had built.. Deep down I felt something was not right. It was a feeling at first like something was off. I tried to ignore it. Tonight was too important to let doubts take over.
I looked at Damian for a moment. He squeezed my hand gently. He looked calm. I saw something in his eyes that I could not understand. Maybe it was the stress of the night. Maybe it was nothing. I pushed the thought away. I looked back at the crowd. They were all watching us waiting for me to say something. I took a breath and stepped forward with the microphone ready. The room got quieter with people whispering to each other.
All eyes were on me. I was used to talking in front of people. Tonight felt different. It felt heavier.
I forced a smile and started talking. "Thank you all for being here tonight " I said, my voice clear. "This moment means a lot to me." I stopped for a moment looking around the room. I saw faces, friends and people who had helped me.. I saw people I did not fully trust. The thought. Went quickly but it left a shadow behind.
"I built my life on work, " I continued. "I wanted to stand on my own to create something that was mine.. I learned that success is not just about power or money. It is about the people who stand with you." My voice got softer as I looked at Damian. He was watching me closely. ". I found someone who understands me, who challenges me and who stands with me." The room responded with applause. People smiled. Some guests raised their glasses nodding in approval. I felt warm inside. That strange feeling was still there.
"Tonight is not about celebrating, " I said, looking back at the crowd. "It is about trust, partnership and the future we are building together." I smiled again. It felt a bit fake. "Thank you for being part of this moment." The applause got louder. The music started playing again. The energy in the room changed back to excitement.
As I stepped back Damian's hand was still holding mine. He leaned in close. Said, "You did well." I nodded. My mind was already somewhere else. The crowd was. Laughing and everything looked normal.. I could not shake the feeling that something was wrong. My eyes moved slowly around the room taking in every detail. I saw a group of investors talking near the end of the room. A couple was laughing loudly near the center..
Near the edges of the hall some people were standing still watching. I narrowed my eyes trying to focus. The moment passed too quickly. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe I was just tired.
Damian took me down from the stage his hand still holding mine. As we moved through the crowd people came up to us congratulating us and smiling. I responded the way I always did.. Inside I was paying attention to everything.
Every sound felt louder, every movement sharper. I noticed things I would normally ignore. A glance that lasted long, a conversation that stopped suddenly. It made no sense. This was my event, my people.. I felt like I was standing in the middle of something I did not fully understand.
"Relax, " Damian said softly beside me, noticing that I was a bit tense. "Everything is fine." I wanted to believe him, I really did. I. Took a deep breath. "I know, " I replied quietly.. The feeling did not go away. As the night went on the energy in the hall got stronger.
Music got louder. Danced and the celebration reached its peak. It should have pulled me in completely. Instead I felt a bit distant. Like I was watching from the outside.
At one point I stepped away. Moved to a quieter corner of the hall. From there I could see everything clearly. The movement, the smiles, the hidden spaces between people.. Again I felt it. That quiet sense of being watched.
I turned slightly scanning the edges of the room. For a second I thought I saw someone standing near the wall half hidden by shadow.. Before I could focus they were gone. My heart skipped a beat. I told myself it was nothing, my imagination playing tricks on me. Tonight was important. I could not let doubt ruin it. I straightened up, pushing the feeling down more.
When I returned to Damian he looked at me with concern. I gave him a smile reassuring him without words. He accepted it though I could tell he was still watching me closely. The night carried on filled with joy, music and celebration. Everything looked perfect, everything felt on the surface.. Beneath it all something had already shifted. Something unseen, something waiting.. Even though I tried to ignore it I could feel it growing stronger, with every passing moment. Like the start of a storm that I could not yet see.
