Chapter 3: The Glass That Ended Everything

1095 Words
I remember the moment everything changed. It was something. A glass. A clear liquid. A soft light reflecting off its surface. A waiter moved through the crowd with ease. I stood near the edge of the hall. I tried to calm the feeling that had followed me all night. The celebration was loud. There were people. Music and laughter filled the air. Cameras flashed everywhere. Journalists pushed forward for pictures. They called out names. They tried to capture every second of the engagement. Everyone thought it was perfect. Damian was nearby. He spoke to a group of investors. His expression was calm. He was in control. I watched him for a moment. Then I turned away. A staff member approached me with a drink. It looked like every drink. It sparkled under the lights. I did not think much of it. I accepted it with a nod. I brought it closer. The noise of the room surrounded me. I remember taking the sip. It tasted normal. Nothing strange. Nothing alarming.. Then something inside me shifted. It was subtle. Like a c***k forming deep beneath my skin. I paused. I lowered the glass slightly. My hand felt heavier. I blinked once. Then I blinked twice. I thought maybe it was exhaustion. Maybe it was the stress of the night.. Then the feeling grew stronger. My breath slowed. My vision softened at the edges. The room began to tilt. I pressed my fingers against the table. I tried to steady myself. It did not help. The noise around me started to blur. The laughter and music sounded distant. I lifted my head. I searched for something. That was when I saw Damian again. He was across the room. He was still calm.. Something about him felt different. I tried to call out.. No sound came. My lips parted. Confusion rose in my chest. My body was not responding. My fingers loosened around the glass. I felt it slip. I caught it again. My heartbeat began to rise. It was uneven and fast. My legs weakened. Panic started to rise. It was like a wave I could not stop. I took one step forward. Then I took another. I tried to reach him. I tried to understand what was happening.. The world around me shifted harder. The lights above became too bright. The faces in the crowd blurred. My vision darkened at the corners. I heard someone call my name.. I could not tell where it came from. My knees gave out. I fell. The sound of the impact was small.. The reaction around me was not. Silence hit the hall for half a second. Then everything exploded into movement. The chairs shifted. Voices rose. People rushed forward. Cameras flashed instantly. Journalists pushed closer. They shouted questions. They tried to understand what had just happened. I could hear everything and nothing. The floor beneath me felt cold. My fingers trembled. I tried to move.. My body no longer listened. The world above me looked distant. I was sinking away from it. I remember faces leaning over me. Shock. Confusion. Fear. Someone tried to touch my shoulder.. Their voices sounded far away. “Call for help!" someone shouted. "Get the team!" another voice followed quickly. The crowd split into chaos. The celebration had turned into panic. Cameras kept flashing. They captured everything. They turned my collapse into a story. I saw Damian moving. He came toward me slowly. Then he moved faster. The space cleared.. Something inside me held my focus. His face. When he reached me he knelt down beside me. My vision was fading.. I could still see his eyes. I searched for them desperately. I needed something. Fear. Shock. Pain. Anything that showed I mattered. What I saw instead made my chest tighten. There was no panic in him. No breaking emotion. Just stillness. Control. A calm expression that did not match the situation. My lips parted slightly.. No words came out. My body was too weak. My breathing is shallow. I tried to hold his gaze. I tried to find something inside it. Something that said this was not real.. There was nothing. Only a quiet distance. It felt like he was looking at a situation. Not a person. Not me. My fingers twitched slightly. I tried to reach for him.. My strength was gone. The noise around us grew louder. People shouted. Footsteps rushed. Flashlights exploded across my vision. I heard someone say my name again.. It was fading now. Damian stayed there. He watched me. He was unreadable.. That was the last thing I clearly saw. The last image burned into my mind was his face above me. It was steady and unchanged. As if nothing inside him was breaking all. My chest felt heavy. My breath became thinner. The world began to pull completely. The voices became echoes. The lights became shadows. The ground beneath me no longer felt real. Around us people began to take control. Security moved in quickly. They formed a barrier. Staff members spoke urgently. They gave instructions. Journalists were pushed back.. Their cameras kept flashing. They captured every angle of the collapse. Every second of chaos. The narrative began to form. "Accident." "Medical emergency." "She collapsed suddenly." The words repeated faster. As if they were being rehearsed. Someone declared that I needed assistance. The situation was under control. The engagement event had been disrupted by an incident. The truth was being shaped in time. It was rewritten in front of hundreds of eyes and lenses. My body was lifted slightly. I think. I felt movement.. It was distant. Disconnected. My head tilted. I saw the ceiling lights again. They spun softly above me. I tried to hold onto something. Anything.. Everything was slipping too fast. The last sound I remember clearly was a voice declaring loudly that I had died. The words did not feel real at first. They floated above me. They spoke to the crowd. Not to me. “She is gone." The sentence spread quickly through the hall. It moved from person to person like fire. Panic turned into silence again.. This time it was different. Heavy. Final. Cameras continued to flash.. Slower now. As if even they were unsure of what they were capturing. Damian remained where he was, for a moment longer. I could still see him through the fading edges of my vision. Still calm. Still unreadable. Still not breaking. That was the thing I saw before everything went completely dark. Not fear. Not regret. Just stillness.. Then even that disappeared.
