The Queen's First Lesson

Chapter Five: The Queen's First Lesson The first rays of dawn slipped through the towering crystal windows of the Palace of Lunaris, bathing the throne room in a soft silver glow. For the first time in twenty-one years, the ancient city welcomed the sunrise with hope instead of silence. Serena Ashford stood alone on the palace balcony, overlooking the forgotten kingdom hidden deep within the Forbidden Forest. The breathtaking city stretched beneath her like a dream. Crystal towers sparkled beneath the morning light, waterfalls cascaded into shimmering lakes, and silver flowers bloomed across the gardens as though celebrating her arrival. Yet Serena couldn't bring herself to smile. Only yesterday, she had been an ordinary omega servant, mocked by nobles and ignored by her own pack. Yesterday, she had believed her greatest dream was becoming the Alpha King's mate. Now she stood as the rightful Lycan Queen. Everything had changed. Everything except the pain inside her heart. Her fingers instinctively brushed the crescent-shaped pendant resting against her chest. "I wish Mother were here," she whispered. A gentle breeze carried the scent of moonlilies through the balcony. "You sound just like her." Serena turned. The First Lycan Queen stood quietly behind her, dressed in shimmering silver robes. Though she was only a spirit, her presence radiated warmth. "My mother... was she afraid too?" The ancient queen smiled. "Every ruler fears the day they receive a crown." Serena lowered her gaze. "I don't even know how to rule." "No one is born knowing." "The difference between a true ruler and a tyrant is the willingness to learn." Before Serena could answer, Elder Orion entered the balcony and bowed respectfully. "Your Majesty, the Council of Spirits awaits." Serena sighed softly. "I suppose queens don't get much time to think." Orion chuckled. "The kingdom has waited centuries for you." "It can wait no longer." Inside the Grand Council Hall, dozens of ancient spirits stood as Serena entered. Every face reflected hope. Orion raised his staff. "Today marks the first gathering of Lunaris since its fall." The spirits placed their fists over their hearts. "Long live the Lycan Queen." The words echoed through the chamber. Serena felt embarrassed. "You don't have to keep bowing." An elderly woman stepped forward with a kind smile. "We bow not because you demand it..." "...but because your bloodline earned it." Serena remained silent. She still wasn't used to hearing those words. Orion unfurled an enormous map across a crystal table. "This..." "...is the continent as it exists today." Serena immediately noticed something troubling. "Twelve kingdoms?" Orion nodded. "Once, they were united." "After Lunaris fell, each Alpha claimed a portion of the empire." Her eyes slowly scanned the map. "So instead of one kingdom..." "There are twelve." "Exactly." "And many have become enemies." The First Lycan Queen stepped beside her. "Division made them weak." "It also allowed darkness to grow." Orion pointed toward the northern mountains. "Several border packs have gone silent during the past month." "What happened to them?" "We don't know." "But we fear someone is gathering an army." Serena immediately remembered the scarred man she had seen in the crystal's vision. "The Shadow Emperor..." The entire hall fell silent. Even the spirits looked uneasy. "So you have seen him." Serena nodded. "He said the hunt had begun." Orion's face darkened. "Then time is shorter than we feared." Hundreds of miles away... Kael Blackthorn stood before the council of Blackthorn Palace. No one dared speak. The Alpha King's expression had remained cold since returning from the Forbidden Forest. Finally, Lady Selene broke the silence. "Your Majesty..." "The kingdom needs stability." Kael looked at her. She continued carefully. "The people already expect our engagement." Several nobles nodded. "The alliance between our families will strengthen the kingdom." "The Moon Festival is only weeks away." Kael slowly rose from his throne. "I have no intention of announcing an engagement." Shock swept through the chamber. Lady Selene's smile froze. "...What?" "I will not marry." The room erupted into whispers. One elder stood. "But Your Majesty..." "The kingdom requires a queen." Kael's golden eyes became ice cold. "I already found one." Silence. No one dared breathe. Lady Selene clenched her fists beneath her gown. "You rejected her." "I did." "Then she is no longer your mate." Kael stared directly at her. "Whether she accepts me again..." "...is no longer my decision." With those words, he walked out of the chamber. Lady Selene's beautiful face twisted with rage. "So..." "He's still thinking about that girl." She turned toward a hooded servant waiting near the door. "Send a message." The servant bowed. "To whom, my lady?" Her smile became cruel. "To the Shadow Hunters." "If Serena Ashford still lives..." "...make sure she doesn't for long." Back in Lunaris... Serena followed Orion into the royal training grounds. Ancient stone pillars surrounded a circular arena engraved with glowing moon symbols. "This is where every Lycan ruler trained." Orion handed Serena a silver sword. Its blade reflected the morning sun like liquid light. "I've never used one before." "Then today is your first lesson." Serena gripped the hilt awkwardly. Orion attacked without warning. She barely raised the sword in time. Steel rang through the arena. The impact nearly knocked the weapon from her hands. "Again." He struck a second time. Then a third. Serena stumbled backward. "I'm too slow." "You're thinking like an omega." "What?" "You are waiting to survive." "You must learn to command." He attacked again. This time Serena stepped forward instead of backward. Their swords collided. A burst of silver energy exploded around them. Both froze. The sword in Serena's hand had begun glowing. Orion smiled proudly. "The royal blade recognizes you." Serena looked down in amazement. The glowing runes along the blade slowly awakened one after another. "What does this mean?" "It means your true power is responding." Before Orion could continue... The pendant around Serena's neck suddenly became hot. Her vision blurred. For a brief second... She saw fire. Burning villages. Dead wolves lying across blood-soaked ground. Children crying. Then... A towering figure dressed in black armor standing upon a mountain of corpses. His crimson eyes looked directly at her. "Come, little queen..." "Let us see whether your kingdom can survive its first war." The vision vanished. Serena staggered backward, struggling to breathe. Orion caught her before she fell. "What did you see?" She looked toward the northern horizon. Her voice trembled. "The Shadow Emperor..." "He's already attacking." Far beyond the mountains, black banners rose above a peaceful border village. The first screams echoed across the valley. And for the first time in centuries... War returned to the continent.
