It was her size. “You keep women’s clothing prepared for emergency abductions?” Roman leaned against the doorframe. “I have employees capable of buying clothes.” “At one in the morning?” “I pay them well.” Elena dropped the shirt. “I’m leaving tomorrow.” “No.” “I have a life.” “So did the men who attacked the garage.” “That is not remotely relevant.” “It is until I know who sent them.” A soft chime sounded through the room. Roman’s phone vibrated. He read the incoming message. All trace of dry amusement disappeared from his face. “What is it?” Elena asked. Roman did not answer. She crossed the room and reached for the phone. He caught her wrist. “Roman.” His grip loosened, but he did not release her. “Tell me.” After a moment, he turned the screen toward her. A photograph filled it. Elena’s apartment building stood in the background. Maya was in the foreground, stepping out of her car. A red target had been drawn across her chest. Beneath the picture was a single sentence. Bring Elena beneath the city before sunrise, or her sister dies instead.
