Emily couldn't stop thinking about what had happened in the rain.
Every time she remembered Mason shielding her from the muddy water, her heart beat a little faster.
"No," she whispered as she stood in front of her dorm mirror. "Don't forget about the bet."
No matter how kind he seemed, she couldn't ignore what she had overheard.
He had accepted a challenge to make her fall in love with him.
She wouldn't let that happen.
The next morning, the campus was unusually lively.
Large banners decorated every building.
WESTWOOD UNIVERSITY WELCOME GALA
Tonight - 7:00 PM
Students rushed around excitedly.
"I heard famous artists are performing!"
"And the student council president will open the dance."
Emily sighed.
"I'm definitely not going."
Her roommate, Chloe, gasped dramatically.
"What?"
Emily laughed.
"I don't have anything to wear."
"You have me."
Before Emily could protest, Chloe dragged her into town.
Two hours later...
Emily stood in front of a changing-room mirror wearing a simple navy-blue dress.
It wasn't expensive.
It wasn't covered in glitter.
But it suited her perfectly.
"You look beautiful," Chloe said.
Emily smiled shyly.
"I've never worn anything like this."
"Trust me."
That evening...
The university hall looked magical.
Crystal lights hung from the ceiling.
Soft music floated through the room.
Students arrived in elegant suits and beautiful dresses.
Emily almost turned back.
She felt completely out of place.
Just then...
Someone called her name.
"Emily."
She turned.
Her breath caught.
Mason Reed stood a few steps away in a perfectly tailored black suit.
For once...
He wasn't smiling arrogantly.
Instead, he simply stared.
"You look..."
He searched for the right word.
"...beautiful."
Emily felt warmth rush to her cheeks.
"Thank you."
"You clean up nicely too."
He laughed.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
Across the room...
Vanessa watched them with burning jealousy.
She couldn't stand the way Mason looked at Emily.
He had never looked at anyone like that before.
"This ends tonight," she muttered.
The principal stepped onto the stage.
"Welcome to another academic year."
Everyone applauded.
"As tradition demands, the student council president will begin the first dance."
The spotlight landed on Mason.
Students cheered loudly.
Girls whispered hopefully.
"He's going to ask Vanessa."
"No."
"Maybe Sophia."
"I wish he'd choose me."
Instead...
Mason walked straight toward Emily.
He stopped in front of her.
Extended his hand.
"May I have this dance?"
The hall fell completely silent.
Emily looked around.
Hundreds of students stared at her.
Including Vanessa.
Emily's heart raced.
"I... I don't know how to dance."
"I'll teach you."
She hesitated.
Then slowly placed her hand in his.
Cheers erupted across the hall.
Soft music began playing.
Mason gently placed one hand around her waist while holding her other hand.
"Relax."
"I'm trying."
"You're stepping on my foot."
Emily gasped.
"I'm so sorry!"
He laughed.
"It's okay."
She looked up.
"You actually smile."
"Only around interesting people."
She rolled her eyes.
"Was that supposed to be charming?"
"Did it work?"
"No."
"You're smiling."
Emily quickly hid her grin.
"I am not."
"You are."
They both laughed.
For a moment...
Everything else disappeared.
No gossip.
No bet.
No jealousy.
Just two people dancing under warm lights.
Suddenly...
The music stopped.
The lights flickered.
A loud voice echoed through the speakers.
"Attention everyone!"
Students looked toward the giant projector screen.
Emily frowned.
"What now?"
Without warning...
A huge photograph appeared.
It showed Mason holding Emily under the umbrella in the rain.
Gasps filled the room.
Another picture appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
Every moment they had spent together over the past few days had been secretly photographed.
Whispers spread through the hall.
"They're dating."
"I knew it."
"So that's why Vanessa is angry."
Emily looked around in confusion.
"Who did this?"
Then she saw Vanessa standing near the control booth.
A satisfied smile crossed Vanessa's face.
She wanted everyone to believe Emily had stolen Mason from her.
Emily felt embarrassed.
"I need to get out of here."
She ran toward the exit.
"Emily!"
Mason chased after her.
Outside...
Cool night air greeted her.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I didn't ask for any of this."
Mason finally caught up.
"Emily."
She turned.
"Why does everyone think we're together?"
"I don't know."
"Your life was already complicated."
She laughed bitterly.
"And now mine is too."
Before Mason could answer...
Rain began falling again.
This time...
Neither of them moved.
They simply stood there in silence.
Finally Mason spoke.
"I'm sorry."
She looked into his eyes.
"For what?"
"For letting you get dragged into my world."
Emily studied his face.
He looked genuinely guilty.
She took a deep breath.
"I don't need an apology."
"You don't?"
"I need honesty."
Mason's expression changed.
For the first time...
The weight of the bet rested heavily on his conscience.
He wanted to tell her everything.
But fear stopped him.
If he confessed now...
He might lose the only girl who had ever treated him like an ordinary person.
Emily looked at him one last time.
"Good night, Mason."
She walked away slowly, leaving him standing alone in the rain.
As he watched her disappear into the darkness, one painful thought echoed through his mind.
"This isn't a game anymore."
He wasn't pretending.
He was really falling for the one girl he was never supposed to love.
