The Forgotten

The wind never stopped. It howled through the shattered peaks of the north, carrying with it whispers that no one could understand. Snow drifted endlessly across the mountain paths, erasing footprints almost as quickly as they were made. Three days had passed since the Seventh Anchor had been sealed. Three days since Caelan had vanished into its light. Three days since the sky itself had begun to change. Aria walked in silence. The Warden's sword rested across her back, its silver runes now glowing with a faint, constant light. Around her neck, the transformed fragment pulsed steadily against her chest, no longer reacting wildly but beating like a second heart. Every few hours... It pointed. Always east. Always toward somewhere she could not yet see. Behind her, Lyra carefully picked her way down the icy trail. "You haven't slept." Aria didn't answer. "You haven't spoken much either." Still nothing. Finally Eryndor sighed. "She blames herself." Aria stopped walking. "I do." Snow crunched beneath her boots as she turned. "If I hadn't awakened the Spark..." "If I hadn't gone into the Vault..." "If I hadn't touched the Anchor..." She couldn't finish. Her voice broke. "Caelan would still be alive." Eryndor stepped closer. "No." His voice was gentle. "He made his choice." "He sacrificed himself." "He fulfilled his oath." Aria shook her head. "That doesn't make it hurt less." "No." "It never does." Silence settled between them once again. Only the wind continued speaking. Far away... Inside the Imperial Capital... Chaos ruled. The throne room that had once echoed with confidence had become a chamber filled with arguments. "The northern borders are collapsing!" "Refugees continue arriving from the mountain villages!" "Entire forests are changing overnight!" "The stars have disappeared!" The Emperor slammed his staff against the marble floor. "Enough!" Instant silence. His eyes swept across the gathered nobles. "Where is Lord Malrec?" No one answered. Finally an elderly advisor stepped forward. "He resigned, Your Majesty." "I know that." The Emperor's voice became colder. "I asked where he is." Again... Silence. The Emperor clenched his jaw. "Find him." "If he refuses to return..." He paused. "...bring me his head." No one questioned the order. Several miles outside the capital... Lord Malrec rode alone. He no longer wore Imperial armor. The crimson crest had been removed from his cloak. His sword remained at his side. Not as a weapon. As a reminder. He stopped beside a lonely crossroads. Someone was waiting. A hooded woman. She stood perfectly still despite the wind. "You took your time," she said. "I wanted to be certain no one followed." She nodded. "You've made your choice then." "I have." "The Empire?" "I've already left it." "The Emperor?" "He'll never stop hunting her." The woman smiled faintly. "He won't get the chance." Malrec frowned. "What do you mean?" Instead of answering, she handed him a small wooden box. Inside... Lay a single silver feather. Malrec's expression changed. "I thought these were extinct." "So did everyone else." He looked back up. "The Sky Keepers still exist?" "A few." "They've been waiting." "For what?" The woman's eyes turned toward the northern horizon. "For the Guardian." That same evening... Aria's group reached the edge of an enormous frozen valley. The landscape opened before them like another world. Ice covered everything. Entire forests stood preserved beneath crystal-clear glaciers. Ancient towers protruded from the frozen earth, their upper halves buried beneath centuries of snow. Lyra stared. "I've never been this far north." Eryndor smiled sadly. "Almost no one has." Aria looked across the valley. "What happened here?" "The First Crossing." She frowned. "The what?" Eryndor walked to the cliff's edge. "Before the Veil existed..." "This was where the two worlds touched." Aria felt the fragment grow warmer. "It still remembers." She followed its glow. Far below... Something shimmered beneath the ice. Not reflected sunlight. Movement. She narrowed her eyes. "There." Lyra looked. "I don't see anything." "There." Again... A ripple. Like someone walking beneath the frozen surface. Then another. Dozens. Aria's heartbeat quickened. "They're moving." Eryndor's expression darkened. "They shouldn't be." "What are they?" He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he drew his sword. "The Forgotten." The ice cracked. A single fracture stretched across the valley. Then another. A deep sound echoed upward. Not an explosion. A heartbeat. The frozen ground trembled beneath their feet. Without warning... One pale hand burst through the ice. Then another. Figures began pulling themselves upward from beneath the frozen lake. Their bodies looked almost human. Almost. Their skin shimmered like translucent crystal. Their eyes glowed silver. Ancient symbols covered their arms. None of them carried weapons. None of them spoke. They simply looked upward... At Aria. One of them stepped forward. Then knelt. Every other figure did the same. Hundreds. Kneeling in absolute silence. Lyra slowly lowered her bow. "They're..." "They're bowing." Aria stared in disbelief. "Why?" The answer came from Eryndor. "Because they remember." "Remember what?" His eyes never left the frozen valley. "The Original Spark." Aria felt cold spread through her chest. "I'm not whoever they think I am." "No." Eryndor agreed quietly. "But part of you was." The fragment around her neck suddenly floated upward. Its silver light spread across the valley. Every kneeling figure placed one hand over their hearts. Then, together... They spoke. Not loudly. Not in anger. In welcome. "Guardian..." The word echoed across the valley. "We have waited." The wind stopped. The snow hung motionless in the air. Time itself seemed to hesitate. Then the tallest of the crystal figures slowly raised his head. His silver eyes met Aria's. His voice was deeper than the others. "The King knows you have returned." Aria's blood ran cold. "What king?" The figure's expression changed. For the first time... Fear crossed his face. "The one who walks behind the Veil." Far above them... The clouds split apart. A massive shadow crossed the moon. Not a bird. Not a dragon. Something far larger. Its wings stretched from one side of the valley to the other before disappearing back into the storm. No sound followed. Only silence. Then... The fragment around Aria's neck pulsed once. A whisper reached only her ears. "He has found you." Aria's hand instinctively closed around the fragment hanging from her neck. Its light dimmed. The wind returned. Snow drifted across the valley once more as though nothing had happened. No one spoke. The crystal figures remained kneeling. Waiting. Watching. Aria looked at Eryndor. "What did it mean?" His expression had grown unusually tense. "It means we no longer have the luxury of moving unseen." "The King..." she said carefully. "Who is he?" Eryndor didn't answer immediately. Instead, he descended the frozen slope toward the nearest crystal figure. It remained perfectly still until he stood before it. Then, for the first time... It bowed its head lower. "Guardian," it said. Its voice sounded like ice shifting beneath a winter lake. "You have returned." Eryndor lowered himself onto one knee. Not as an equal. As one showing respect. Aria stared. "Eryndor..." He looked back at her. "Kneel." "What?" "Kneel." She hesitated. "I don't understand." "You don't have to." His voice was gentle. "But they remember customs older than kingdoms." Slowly... Reluctantly... Aria knelt. The instant her knee touched the snow, the valley erupted with silver light. Ancient runes hidden beneath the ice illuminated one after another, spreading across the frozen landscape until the entire valley resembled a sky filled with stars. The kneeling figures placed both hands over their hearts. Then, together, they spoke. "We welcome the Guardian." "We welcome the Flame Returned." "We welcome Hope." The words echoed across the mountains. Aria felt something stir deep inside her. Not a memory. An emotion. Warmth. Grief. Love. They didn't belong to her. Yet somehow... They did. The tallest crystal figure slowly rose. He stood nearly eight feet tall, his translucent form glowing softly beneath the winter sun. Unlike the others, faint cracks spread across his body. Time had reached him. But it had not defeated him. He looked directly at Aria. "We have waited a very long time." "Who are you?" she asked. "I no longer remember the name my mother gave me." His answer surprised her. "It has been many centuries." "I remember only my duty." "What duty?" "To wait." He smiled sadly. "And now..." "Our waiting has ended." Lyra stepped cautiously beside Aria. "You called her Guardian." "She is." Aria shook her head. "No." "I'm just..." She struggled for the words. "I'm just Aria." The crystal guardian regarded her quietly. "That is who you are." "But it is not all that you are." Those words settled heavily over the valley. Eryndor sighed. "I hoped we would have more time." "Time for what?" Aria asked. "To let you become yourself before learning who came before." "I don't understand." "No." He looked toward the distant mountains. "You aren't meant to." "Not yet." The tallest guardian extended one crystalline hand. The fragment around Aria's neck floated into the air. She reached for it instinctively. It slipped beyond her fingers. "Wait!" "It will return," the guardian assured her. The fragment hovered above the valley. Seven beams of silver light burst outward. Each pointed toward a different horizon. Six faded almost immediately. One remained. East. Toward the heart of the Starfall Peaks. "The first path awakens," the guardian whispered. "The others still sleep." Aria frowned. "What paths?" "The Roads Between." "The Wardens walked them once." "They crossed the world in moments." She looked at Eryndor. "Is that possible?" "It was." "Before the Veil weakened." The guardian's gaze drifted skyward. His peaceful expression changed. "They are watching." Every crystal figure slowly stood. None reached for weapons. Instead, they looked toward the clouds. Aria followed their gaze. At first... She saw nothing. Then the clouds moved. Not because of wind. Something enormous passed behind them. Its shape was impossible to define. Sometimes wings. Sometimes smoke. Sometimes nothing at all. Yet wherever it moved... The sunlight dimmed. Lyra instinctively nocked an arrow. "What is that?" Eryndor slowly lowered her bow. "Don't." "It can't be killed." The shadow continued across the sky before disappearing beyond the mountains. Only after it vanished did everyone breathe again. "What was it?" Aria whispered. The guardian answered. "A Watcher." "It serves the King." "It cannot cross the Veil." "Not yet." "Then why is it here?" "It is searching." "For me?" He nodded once. "The Spark burns brighter than ever." "And the Broken King can feel its light." A chill settled over Aria. "He doesn't know where I am?" "No." "But he knows..." The guardian looked directly into her eyes. "...that you exist." Silence returned. Finally Aria asked the question she had been carrying since the Vault. "Who was the Original Spark?" The crystal guardian smiled. "You ask the wrong question." She frowned. "What do you mean?" "The Original Spark wasn't a person." The valley became perfectly still. "It was a promise." Aria blinked. "A promise?" "The first Wardens discovered that no prison could hold darkness forever." "So they created something stronger." "Hope." "They bound that hope into a living soul." "The Spark." "It would pass from Guardian to Guardian..." "...until the final battle." Aria's heart pounded. "So..." "I'm not someone reborn?" "No." "You are something far more important." "You are the next promise." Eryndor finally stepped beside her. "There." He pointed toward the horizon. At first she saw only mountains. Then... An impossibly thin line of silver stretched across the distant peaks. It shimmered like sunlight on water. "What is that?" "The Road Between." "It hasn't appeared in centuries." "The fragment restored its first path." Aria stared. "It wants us to follow it." "Yes." "Where does it lead?" Eryndor's expression became solemn. "To the City of Stars." Lyra looked at him sharply. "I thought it was destroyed." "So did I." The guardian shook his head. "It was hidden." "There is a difference." A low rumble rolled across the mountains. This time it wasn't thunder. The snow beneath their feet vibrated. Cracks spread across the frozen lake. The crystal guardian looked downward. "They've found us." "The Watchers?" "No." "Worse." The ice exploded. Dark mist poured upward through the widening cracks. It wasn't smoke. It moved with purpose. Like thousands of living shadows flowing together. Every crystal guardian immediately formed a circle around Aria. The tallest one turned to Eryndor. "The Guardian must leave." "We'll hold them." Eryndor nodded. "Come!" Aria didn't move. "What are they?" "The first to fall beyond the Veil." The guardian's voice carried no hatred. Only sorrow. "They no longer remember who they were." The shadows reached the surface. Hands emerged first. Then faces. Featureless. Endless. The Forgotten did not attack. They simply walked. Toward Aria. Drawn by the Spark. The crystal guardians met them without hesitation. Silver light collided with living darkness. The frozen valley erupted into chaos. "Run!" Eryndor shouted. Lyra grabbed Aria's arm. "We have to go!" "But they'll die!" "They already made their choice!" Reluctantly, Aria turned. The fragment blazed against her chest. The silver road brightened ahead. Behind them, the sounds of battle echoed across the frozen valley. Not screams. Not cries. Only the relentless collision of light against shadow. Aria looked back one last time. The tallest guardian stood alone at the center of the valley, surrounded by darkness. He raised one hand toward her. Not in farewell. In blessing. Then the shadows swallowed him. The silver road stretched onward into the mountains. Toward the hidden City of Stars. Toward answers. Toward the war that had waited centuries to begin. And far beyond the Veil... In a throne room carved from black crystal, a figure slowly opened his eyes. Nocthar smiled. "So..." "The Guardian has taken the first road." He rose from his throne. Around him, an endless army stirred within the darkness. "Prepare them." "The game has finally begun."
