The silver road did not exist.
At least...
It shouldn't have.
It floated inches above the snow, a ribbon of pale light stretching through the mountains until it disappeared beyond the horizon. It left no footprints. It disturbed no snow. Every step upon it felt strangely solid, yet impossibly weightless.
Aria ran.
Lyra kept pace beside her, breathing hard through the freezing air.
Behind them, Eryndor glanced back only once.
The frozen valley had disappeared beneath a storm of darkness.
No light remained.
He lowered his head.
"They've fallen."
No one answered.
There were no words that could carry the weight of what had been lost.
Hours passed.
The Road Between wound higher into the Starfall Peaks.
Snow became ice.
Ice became bare stone.
The air grew thin enough that every breath burned.
Yet the silver road remained warm beneath their feet.
Aria finally broke the silence.
"They knew me."
"They remembered something I don't."
Eryndor nodded.
"They remembered the Promise."
"But I'm not the Original Spark."
"No."
"Then why did they bow?"
"Because they saw what you carry."
Aria looked down at the fragment resting against her chest.
"It still feels like a piece of stone."
"It stopped being stone long ago."
The mountains changed.
The jagged cliffs gave way to towering pillars of crystal rising naturally from the earth.
Some reached hundreds of feet into the sky.
Others had shattered centuries ago, their broken remains scattered across the valleys below.
Sunlight passed through them.
The entire mountain range shimmered with shifting rainbows.
Lyra slowed.
"This place..."
"...is beautiful."
"It used to be alive," Eryndor replied.
"What do you mean?"
"These aren't crystals."
He rested his hand against one of the enormous pillars.
"They're trees."
Aria frowned.
"Trees?"
"They were."
"The Veil changed them."
She looked up again.
Entire forests.
Turned to crystal.
Preserved forever.
"What happened here?"
Eryndor sighed.
"The first war."
Near sunset...
The road ended.
Not gradually.
Abruptly.
Its silver light vanished beneath a massive cliff face.
There was nowhere else to go.
Lyra looked around.
"Dead end."
"No."
Eryndor stepped forward.
"This is the entrance."
"To what?"
Instead of answering, he placed both hands against the smooth stone.
Nothing happened.
He frowned.
"It should..."
The fragment around Aria's neck suddenly grew warm.
She stepped beside him.
The cliff vibrated.
Ancient runes slowly emerged across its surface.
A deep voice echoed through the stone.
"State your purpose."
Lyra jumped.
"Who said that?"
The mountain itself answered.
"State your purpose."
Eryndor looked toward Aria.
"It won't answer me."
"It wants you."
Aria swallowed.
"I don't know what to say."
The silence stretched.
Then she spoke honestly.
"I'm looking for a way to save the world."
Nothing happened.
For one long heartbeat...
Everything remained still.
Then the mountain trembled.
The runes blazed with silver fire.
The enormous cliff slowly divided down its center.
Ancient gears groaned somewhere deep inside the stone.
A doorway opened.
Cold blue light spilled outward.
The voice returned.
"Purpose accepted."
Beyond the entrance lay a tunnel unlike anything Aria had ever seen.
The walls were perfectly smooth.
No torch burned.
Instead, countless tiny lights drifted through the air like floating stars.
As they walked...
The lights followed them.
Lyra reached toward one.
It settled gently onto her fingertip.
"It's warm."
"It remembers sunlight," Eryndor said quietly.
They continued deeper.
The tunnel seemed endless.
Until...
It opened.
Aria stopped breathing.
An entire city stretched before them.
Not ruined.
Sleeping.
Great towers of white stone reached toward an artificial sky glittering with thousands of suspended lights.
Bridges connected impossible heights.
Crystal rivers flowed through empty streets.
Gardens bloomed without gardeners.
Fountains still flowed after centuries.
Everything remained untouched.
Waiting.
"The City of Stars," Eryndor whispered.
"It survived."
Aria walked forward slowly.
There were no signs of decay.
No broken windows.
No fallen walls.
It looked as though everyone had simply...
Left.
"When was the last time anyone came here?"
Eryndor shook his head.
"Centuries."
Lyra stared.
"How is that possible?"
"The city protects itself."
Aria noticed something strange.
There was no dust.
No snow.
Not even fallen leaves.
It was as if time itself had refused to enter.
The fragment pulsed.
One of the floating lights drifted toward her.
Then another.
Soon hundreds surrounded her.
They circled gently.
Almost playfully.
"What are they?"
"The city's memories."
Eryndor smiled.
"They know who you are."
A bell rang.
Clear.
Soft.
Beautiful.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
Across the silent city, ancient bells awakened one after another.
The sound echoed endlessly through the empty streets.
Lyra slowly turned.
"We didn't touch anything."
"No."
Eryndor's smile disappeared.
"The city announced our arrival."
Deep beneath the streets...
Something opened its eyes.
For centuries...
It had waited.
Watching.
Listening.
Guarding.
Now...
The bells had awakened it.
Stone shifted somewhere below.
Ancient mechanisms turned for the first time in ages.
A single sentence echoed through the empty halls beneath the city.
"The Guardian has returned."
Above ground...
Aria continued walking toward the city's center.
Every instinct told her someone was watching.
Not with hostility.
With expectation.
The fragment led them through silent streets until they reached a vast circular plaza.
At its center stood a monument unlike anything she had ever seen.
Seven stone figures.
The Seven Wardens.
Each held a sword pointed toward the sky.
Except one.
The seventh statue held nothing.
Its hands were empty.
Its face...
Had been deliberately destroyed.
Aria stepped closer.
"Why would someone erase it?"
Eryndor's face darkened.
"Because history fears what it cannot forgive."
Lyra brushed snow from the monument's base.
"There are words here."
The inscription was ancient.
Barely readable.
Together they deciphered it.
When the final Guardian walks the Road Between,
The City shall awaken.
The Keeper shall rise.
The Betrayer shall return.
And the King Beyond the Veil shall seek the Last Door.
Silence followed.
Then...
The ground shook.
Not violently.
Deliberately.
The statue with the broken face began to move.
Stone cracked.
Dust fell away.
Its empty hands slowly opened.
A beam of silver light erupted from its chest and shot into the sky above the city.
Across every tower...
Across every bridge...
Across every silent street...
Runes ignited.
The City of Stars awakened.
Far away, beyond the mountains...
Lord Malrec looked toward the northern horizon.
A pillar of silver light pierced the heavens.
His horse became restless.
He whispered only one sentence.
"So..."
"You found it."
Within the darkness beyond the Veil...
Nocthar watched the same light.
His smile faded.
For the first time...
Concern crossed his face.
"The Keeper..."
He had hoped it would never awaken.
He turned toward the endless army gathering behind him.
"Change of plans."
"Do not wait for the Veil to fall."
He stretched out one hand.
Darkness gathered around it.
"We march now."
And beneath the City of Stars...
Something ancient took its first breath in a thousand years.
