The Keeper Awakens

1076 Words
The light never faded. It rose from the heart of the City of Stars like a second sunrise, bathing every tower, bridge, and silent street in silver. Ancient runes awakened across the white stone walls, glowing with renewed life after centuries of darkness. The city was no longer asleep. It was watching. Aria stood frozen in the center of the plaza. The beam of light still poured from the broken statue's chest into the heavens. Then... The bells stopped. Every sound vanished. Even the wind refused to enter the city. Lyra slowly lowered her bow. "I don't like this." Neither did Aria. The silence felt... intentional. As though the city itself were holding its breath. A deep rumble echoed beneath their feet. The seven statues surrounding the plaza began to move. Not all at once. One by one. Stone cracked. Dust fell away. The first Warden lowered his sword. The second turned his head. The third opened his eyes. Aria instinctively stepped backward. "They're alive." "No," Eryndor said quietly. "They're remembering." The statues continued moving until all seven faced the center of the plaza. Then they knelt. Not before Aria. Before the broken statue. A c***k spread across its body. Light poured through it. The stone shell shattered. A figure stepped forward. He wore white robes trimmed with silver that looked untouched by time. His long hair fell across his shoulders like fresh snow. His eyes... They were entirely silver. He looked young. Yet older than the mountains themselves. The stranger surveyed the silent city before his gaze settled on Aria. "So..." His voice was calm. "The Spark still endures." No one moved. The stranger slowly descended from the pedestal. Each step caused glowing runes to bloom beneath his feet before fading away. Lyra raised her bow. "Who are you?" He regarded her with mild curiosity. "I have carried many names." "Most have been forgotten." He stopped before Aria. "But once..." "I was called the Keeper." Eryndor immediately knelt. Lyra looked at him in disbelief. "What are you doing?" "You kneel before the First Keeper." Her eyes widened. "The First..." The Keeper looked toward Eryndor. "You survived." "Barely." "You have aged." Eryndor smiled faintly. "I suppose that's what happens when time is allowed to touch you." For the first time... The Keeper smiled. Aria stared at him. "Were you waiting here?" "I was sleeping." "For how long?" "I stopped counting after the first thousand years." She blinked. "A thousand..." "The city preserved me." He looked around. "It seems it also preserved my home." His smile faded. "But not my people." The Keeper walked slowly across the plaza. His fingertips brushed the ancient stone. Every surface he touched glowed softly before returning to normal. "The city remembers them." He said it almost to himself. "It refuses to forget." Aria stepped closer. "You knew the Seven Wardens." "I knew them all." "Were you one of them?" "No." "What were you?" He met her eyes. "I built them." Silence. Even Eryndor looked surprised. "You..." "I taught the first Wardens." "I forged the first blades." "I sealed the first Gate." He looked toward the silver sky. "And I failed to stop the first betrayal." Aria felt the fragment around her neck grow warm. "You know about the Spark." "I should." "I created it." Her breath caught. "You..." The Keeper nodded. "When darkness could no longer be defeated..." "We created something that could outlive us." "Hope." "The Spark." "It was never a weapon." "It was never meant to destroy." "It was meant to remind humanity why it should survive." Aria slowly lowered her gaze. "So why does everyone keep trying to use it?" The Keeper's expression became sad. "Because people often mistake hope for power." Lyra frowned. "If you created the Spark..." "Then why hide it?" "We didn't." "It hid itself." He looked toward Aria. "It chooses." "It always has." "It rejected kings." "It rejected conquerors." "It rejected every soul that sought power for its own sake." He smiled gently. "Then it found you." Aria shook her head. "I'm nobody." "You were." The Keeper corrected softly. "But the Spark never chooses who someone is." "It chooses who they could become." A sudden tremor shook the city. The Keeper's expression immediately hardened. "They've come farther than I expected." Eryndor looked toward the city gates. "You mean Malrec?" "No." A deeper tremor followed. One of the distant towers cracked. The silver lights floating above the streets scattered like frightened birds. The Keeper looked upward. "He found a weakness." Aria's heartbeat quickened. "Nocthar." The Keeper nodded once. "He is testing the Veil." Far beyond the city... Dark clouds gathered above the mountains. Within them... Something moved. Not one shadow. Hundreds. Winged creatures circled silently inside the storm. They had no faces. Only glowing silver eyes. Lyra stared into the distance. "What are those?" The Keeper answered without looking. "Harbingers." "The first servants to cross." "They shouldn't exist in this world." "Neither should the storm." The fragment around Aria's neck suddenly blazed. A beam of silver light shot eastward. Not toward the sky. Toward the center of the city. The Keeper followed it. "It has chosen." "Chosen what?" Aria asked. "Our next destination." Together they crossed the silent plaza. The silver beam led them through winding streets lined with empty homes. Everything remained untouched. As though the city's people had vanished in a single instant. Eventually they reached an enormous circular building unlike the others. Its doors stood nearly forty feet high. Seven locks sealed the entrance. Six were broken. One remained intact. The fragment pulsed faster. The Keeper rested one hand against the final lock. "This..." He whispered. "...is the Hall of Echoes." "What is it?" "The place where every Guardian learned the truth." Aria swallowed. "And what truth is that?" The Keeper looked directly at her. "Who Nocthar really is." Before she could answer... The entire city shook violently. A deafening roar rolled across the mountains. One of the Harbingers burst through the clouds. Its wings blotted out the afternoon sun. It dove toward the City of Stars. Lyra drew her bow. Eryndor unsheathed his sword. The Keeper simply watched. "No..." he said quietly. "It found us." The creature screamed. The sound shattered windows across the city. Then, with terrifying force... It crashed into the city's outer wall. Ancient stone exploded into the air. Dust engulfed the streets. For the first time in a thousand years... The City of Stars was under siege.
