Chapter Four – Unexpected Visitor

710 Words
Olivia froze as the shadow moved closer to her window. Her heart pounded in her chest. She barely dared to breathe. Then the shadow stepped fully into the light. It was Daniel. “Daniel?!” Her voice trembled. He blinked, surprised. “Olivia… hi? Are you okay?” She stepped back, gripping the edge of the couch. “What are you… doing here?” “I… I wanted to see you. I wasn’t sure if you’d reply to my messages,” Daniel said, his brow furrowed. “Why… why are you acting like that?” Olivia hesitated, unsure how to explain herself. Her chest tightened, and a strange mix of surprise left her tongue tied. Daniel took a careful step closer, his hands slightly raised. “You’re… looking shocked, wasn't expecting me to actually come?. She shook her head, forcing a small, nervous smile. “No… ” He tilted his head, studying her. “No? You don’t seem like yourself. I just came to see if you were okay.” Olivia just stared at her foot, but slowly, she took a deep breath. Her hands unclenched slightly from her phone. “I’m fine,” she said softly. “Really.” Daniel nodded slowly. Then, after a pause, he said casually, “Seems like you got a new neighbor downstairs.” Olivia’s eyes flicked toward the window. “Yes… a new neighbor just moved in.” Daniel raised an eyebrow, curious. “Downstairs? Really? What’s he like?” She hesitated, careful with her words. “Quiet… keeps to himself mostly. I don’t know much about him yet.” Daniel leaned slightly forward, intrigued. “Hmm… quiet types can be interesting. Or maybe trouble.” Olivia gave a small, tight smile. “Maybe. I’ve only seen him a few times. He seems… normal.” Daniel tilted his head, studying her closely. “Normal, huh? You seem… uneasy. Is it him?” She shook her head. “I don’t know. Maybe I’m just tired.” He nodded slowly, still puzzled, but he didn’t press further. After a moment, Olivia took a deep breath and tried to ease the tension. “Would you like some coffee? I can make us a cup.” Daniel’s eyes softened, a small smile forming. “Sure… that sounds good.” Olivia got up and moved to the kitchen. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the apartment as she poured two cups. She returned with one, handing it to him. Daniel took it, their fingers brushing slightly. He glanced at her, his curiosity evident. “So… how’s work been? Still busy?” Olivia let out a small sigh, relaxing a little. “Yeah… nonstop. The restaurant’s been full, and the manager has been… well, stressful. But I’m managing.” Daniel gave a small smile. “I remember you always handling things well. I just… I didn’t mean to be distant lately. I guess work and life got in the way.” Olivia’s brow furrowed. “Distant? You mean… your messages, or…?” “Yeah,” he said softly. “I know I’ve been hard to reach. I didn’t want you to think I was ignoring you… I just… I needed space to sort things out. You know how it is.” She nodded slowly. “I understand. But it felt… weird, not knowing.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I get that. I should’ve explained. I just… I didn’t want to add more stress to your life.” Olivia felt a flicker of warmth but still kept her guard up. “Thanks… I appreciate that.” They sipped their coffee quietly, the warmth helping Olivia relax completely. After a moment, she asked softly, “Are… are you going to spend the night?” Daniel met her gaze steadily, a faint smile on his lips. “Yes.” Olivia felt her shoulders loosen. She smiled to herself. .The tension that had gripped her all evening melted away. For now, Daniel’s presence was calming, familiar, and grounding. The night stretched ahead, full of possibilities, and Olivia felt a small thrill at what was to come. The apartment was quiet, the building still, and for the first time since she had gotten home, she felt completely at ease.
