The sky above Lumira darkened as the enormous shadow dragon circled the glowing city.
Its wings were made of swirling black mist, stretching wide enough to cover the tallest crystal towers. Each flap sent waves of cold wind through the streets below.
Citizens of Lumira began to run.
The armored woman who had knelt before Alora stood quickly.
“Defensive positions!” she shouted.
Guards rushed across the floating bridges, raising glowing shields of magic. Blue light spread across the city like a protective dome.
Alora stared at the creature in shock.
“That thing… Nyxara sent it?”
“Yes,” Cael said grimly. “It’s a creature of the Obsidian Court. A Shadow Dragon.”
The beast roared.
The sound shook the entire city.
Then it attacked.
A blast of dark fire shot from its mouth, slamming against Lumira’s glowing shield. The protective barrier trembled under the force.
The armored woman turned to Alora.
“My name is Captain Lyra,” she said quickly. “Princess, you must go to safety.”
“No,” Alora said firmly.
Lyra looked surprised.
“I won’t hide while others fight for me.”
Cael studied her carefully.
“You are still learning your power.”
“But if Nyxara is attacking because of me, then I should help stop it.”
The dragon dove again, smashing its claws against the magical shield.
Cracks of light appeared across the barrier.
Lyra gritted her teeth.
“We cannot hold much longer.”
Alora stepped forward.
Her crescent mark began to glow.
“Then let me try.”
