The Gilded Cage

Evelina Sinclair Four days. Four days of lying in that sterile bed while my body knitted itself back together—four days of broth and silence and the physician's worried eyes checking my pulse every hour like he expected me to drop dead at any moment. Four days of knowing I was *different* now. Changed. Marked by survival in a way that had nothing to do with the bruises fading on my thighs. On the third morning after waking—my fifth day in this place overall—the physician finally signed my release. "Strict orders," he said, his voice low and serious as he helped me into a simple linen dress that felt too clean against my skin. "No intimate contact. None. Your body..." He paused, his jaw tightening. "You're healing, but you're fragile. One wrong move and you'll tear. Bleed. Die." I nodded, not speaking. My voice felt like a stranger's property, something I didn't know how to use anymore. "I've informed the Supreme Alpha's household," he continued, and my blood ran cold at the title. "They know. He knows." *He knows.* The monster who destroyed me, who split me open and filled me with his seed and his violence—he knows I'm fragile now. Breakable. The thought should have comforted me. It didn't. --- I expected to return to the slave quarters. To the straw pallets and the cold stone and the other omegas who would look at me with fear or hatred or both. Instead, they took me somewhere else. The residence was smaller than the Alpha's main keep, but impossibly finer than anything I'd touched in eight months. Real glass in the windows. A bed with a mattress thick enough to drown in. Rugs that swallowed sound. I stood in the center of the room, trembling, waiting for the trick, the trap, the punchline. The matron delivered it herself. "Well, well," she sneered, circling me like a shark scenting blood. "Look at you. *Greed.* That's what you are. Greedy little b***h. Couldn't just die like the others, could you? Had to survive. Had to make trouble." She stopped in front of me, her breath hot and sour. "You think this is a reward? This?" She gestured at the room with contempt. "You're still meat. Just... preserved meat now. Worth keeping alive until you break properly." I kept my eyes down, my hands clasped so tight my knuckles ached. Eight months. Eight months of sleeping on stone, of eating scraps, of being beaten for speaking, for breathing, for existing. And now—*this*—because my cunt hadn't killed me? The injustice of it tasted like ash. "You're disgusting," the matron whispered, leaning close. "A freak. A mistake. And when he breaks you—and he *will* break you—I'll be there to sweep up the pieces." She left, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the glass. I stood there, shaking, until my legs gave out and I collapsed onto the plush rug. The softness was obscene. I didn't deserve softness. I deserved the stone. The stone was honest. --- "You're really her?" The voice was young, nervous. I looked up to find a girl—maybe sixteen, wide-eyed, freckled—standing in the doorway with a bundle of linens clutched to her chest. "The one who survived?" she continued, stepping inside without waiting for permission. "The Omega? Oh my Goddess, oh my—" She dropped the linens and rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside me. "Is it true? Did you really take him? All of him? The *knot*?" I flinched at the word, my body remembering the tearing, the burning, the impossible pressure of being locked together. "I..." My voice cracked. "I don't..." "They said you screamed for hours," she whispered, awe and horror mixing in her tone. "They said you bled for days. They said your heart stopped and you came back." She grabbed my hand, squeezing too tight. "How? How did you survive? What's your secret?" *I don't have one,* I wanted to scream. *I'm just too stubborn to die. I have people to destroy.* But I said nothing. I just stared at our joined hands—hers clean and soft, mine scarred and calloused—and felt the tears coming. Hot. Ugly. Unstoppable. I broke. The sobs tore out of me like they were ripping my ribs apart, eight months of pain and fear and humiliation pouring out in racking waves. The maid—*what was her name? I didn't even know her name*—held me while I cried, stroking my hair like I was something precious, and that only made it worse. "I was sold," I choked out between sobs. "My stepmother... eight months ago... I've been beaten, starved, sleeping on stone... and now... *now*..." I laughed, hysterical and broken. "Now I get a mattress? Because I didn't die?" The maid said nothing. She just held me tighter. --- When I finally quieted, hiccupping and hollow, she helped me to the bed and sat beside me, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Listen to me," she said, urgent now. "My name is Cora. I'm to assist you. Help you bathe, dress, prepare. But you need to know—if you survive another night with him, you'll be promoted. Officially. A concubine, maybe. Elevated status, better chambers, protection from the common guards." She paused, her eyes darting to the door. "But there's Lady Seraphina. She's... she's his favorite. Has been for two years. She services him in other ways—mouth, hands, whatever pleases him—but she never takes him inside. She knows it would kill her. She's beautiful, cunning, and she hates competition." My stomach dropped. "She'll see me as a threat." "She already does." Cora nodded grimly. "Word travels fast. She knows you survived. She knows what that means. And she'll destroy you if she can—poison, lies, accidents in the night. Unless..." "Unless what?" Cora leaned closer, her breath warm against my ear. "Unless you secure your position first. If he requests you again—and he will, they say he's already asking—you must ask for something. A rank. Protection. *Lady-in-waiting* status, officially appointed to his household with rights and title." She pulled back, her eyes serious. "It's the only way you'll live through the week. As a named concubine with rank, she can't touch you without his wrath. As an unprotected curiosity? You're already dead." I stared at her, the weight of it settling over me like a shroud. Surviving the Alpha was only the beginning. Now I had to survive his harem.
