Ayla barely slept that night.
Rayyan's message remained open on her phone.
Can I see you tomorrow?
She had read it so many times that the words had almost stopped looking real.
Part of her was hopeful.
Maybe he had finally understood.
Maybe he wanted to tell her that he had chosen her.
Maybe the distance had made him realize how much he needed her.
But another part of her knew better.
She had spent too long imagining conversations that had never happened.
So this time, she promised herself she wouldn't expect anything.
Whatever Rayyan wanted to say, she would listen.
Even if it hurt.
The next afternoon, they met at the park.
It was the same park where they had spent countless evenings during college.
The trees had grown taller.
The benches had been repainted.
But the old fountain still stood in the middle.
Rayyan was already there.
Ayla approached slowly.
"Hey."
He turned.
"Hey."
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Rayyan smiled faintly.
"You look tired."
"So do you."
"I haven't been sleeping much."
"Me neither."
They both laughed quietly.
It felt almost normal.
Almost.
They sat on the bench.
Rayyan looked at his hands.
"I've been thinking."
"About?"
"Us."
Ayla's heart tightened.
"Okay."
"I don't want to lose you."
She looked at him.
"Then don't."
"It's not that simple."
"Why not?"
He sighed.
"Because I don't know how to fix what happened."
Ayla looked down.
"I don't either."
"You were my best friend before everything got complicated."
"I know."
"And I miss that."
Ayla's eyes filled with tears.
"So do I."
Rayyan turned toward her.
"But things changed."
"Because I fell in love with you."
He went quiet.
Ayla took a deep breath.
She had said it before, but this time she wasn't hiding behind anger or jealousy.
"I love you, Rayyan."
His eyes softened.
"I know."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
He waited.
"I don't just care about you. I don't just need you because you're my best friend. I love you. I've loved you for a long time."
Her voice trembled.
"I tried to pretend it wasn't there. I tried to convince myself it would go away. But it didn't."
Rayyan looked away.
Ayla continued.
"And I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For the way I behaved."
She wiped her tears.
"I was scared. I thought if I held on tightly enough, you couldn't leave."
Rayyan's expression broke.
"Ayla..."
"But I was wrong."
She looked at him.
"You were never mine to keep."
Silence.
Rayyan didn't know what to say.
He had imagined Ayla confessing many times.
He had imagined being happy.
Being shocked.
Maybe even being angry.
He had never imagined feeling this helpless.
"I love you," he finally said.
Ayla's heart jumped.
Then he continued.
"But not in the way you want me to."
The hope disappeared from her face.
Rayyan closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
She nodded slowly.
"I knew."
"Then why tell me?"
"Because I needed you to know the truth."
He looked at her.
"And because I don't want you to think I left because you weren't enough."
Ayla laughed through her tears.
"Maybe that's exactly why it hurts."
Rayyan frowned.
"What?"
"Because I know I wasn't enough for you."
"You were."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I was enough to be your best friend. Just not enough to be the person you loved."
He couldn't argue with that.
Ayla looked at him carefully.
"Is it Maya?"
Rayyan hesitated.
Ayla smiled sadly.
"You don't have to lie."
"I don't know."
"You do."
He sighed.
"I like her."
Ayla closed her eyes.
There it was.
The truth.
The thing she had been terrified to hear.
"Do you love her?"
"No."
"Yet."
Rayyan didn't answer.
Ayla nodded.
"Okay."
"Ayla, I'm not choosing her over you."
"But you are choosing."
He looked at her.
She continued.
"Maybe not today. Maybe not intentionally. But every time you spend more time with her, every time you tell her things you used to tell me, every time you choose her company when you could choose mine..."
Her voice broke.
"You're moving toward her."
Rayyan looked down.
He couldn't deny it.
They sat in silence.
Then Ayla said something unexpected.
"I don't want to fight her."
Rayyan looked at her.
"I don't want to fight anyone."
"You don't have to."
"I know."
She wiped her tears.
"I just need to learn how to let you go."
Rayyan's chest tightened.
"You don't have to disappear from my life."
"I think I do."
"Ayla."
"If I stay this close to you, I'll keep hoping."
He had no answer.
Because he knew she was right.
They stood.
For a moment, neither knew how to say goodbye.
Rayyan looked at her.
"Can I hug you?"
Ayla nodded.
He wrapped his arms around her.
She immediately closed her eyes.
For a few seconds, she let herself remember.
The warmth.
The familiarity.
The feeling of home.
Then she pulled away.
"If I stay longer, I won't leave."
Rayyan smiled sadly.
"I understand."
She turned around.
Then stopped.
"Rayyan?"
"Yeah?"
"Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for choosing what makes you happy."
He nodded.
"And you?"
She smiled through her tears.
"I'll learn to do the same."
She walked away.
This time, Rayyan didn't follow.
He stood there watching her disappear.
And for the first time, he understood that losing someone didn't always happen because they stopped loving you.
Sometimes they left because they loved you enough to stop asking you to stay.
That evening, Rayyan met Maya.
She immediately noticed something was wrong.
"What happened?"
"I talked to Ayla."
Maya went quiet.
"What did she say?"
"She confessed."
Maya's expression changed.
"She told you she loves you?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"I told her the truth."
Maya looked at him carefully.
"What truth?"
"That I don't feel the same."
A small smile appeared on Maya's face.
"I'm sorry."
Rayyan nodded.
"Me too."
Maya moved closer.
"Rayyan."
He looked at her.
"You don't have to feel guilty."
"I don't."
"Do you?"
He hesitated.
"A little."
Maya reached for his hand.
"You deserve to be happy."
He looked at their hands.
Then at her.
For a moment, he thought about Ayla.
About seven years.
About the park.
About her tears.
About the way she had walked away.
Then he looked at Maya again.
She was there.
She understood him.
She made things easy.
And Rayyan was tired of things being difficult.
So he held her hand.
Across town, Ayla sat alone in her room.
Her phone was silent.
She didn't expect Rayyan to message.
She had told him to let her go.
And yet, some foolish part of her still hoped he wouldn't.
She opened their old chat one last time.
At the very top was a message from years ago.
Rayyan: Promise we'll always be friends?
Ayla had replied:
Ayla: Always.
She smiled sadly.
Some promises weren't meant to last forever.
Some were only meant to last until the people making them changed.
Ayla locked her phone.
Then, for the first time in years, she didn't wait for Rayyan's name to appear on her screen.
She cried.
She let herself hurt.
And when the tears finally stopped, she whispered to herself:
"I loved you enough to stay."
She took a breath.
"And now I have to love myself enough to leave."
Outside her window, the rain began falling.
The same rain that had once brought them together.
Only this time, Ayla was standing beneath it alone.
And somewhere in the distance, Rayyan was beginning a new chapter with someone else.
Neither of them knew that this wasn't the end.
It was only the beginning of the longest distance they would ever have to cross.
