Chapter Four: A Secret Between Them

852 Words
Jennifer barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered Daniel's smile, the warmth in his voice, and the way he had looked at her when they spoke. She tried to convince herself that it meant nothing. After all, Daniel was the son of one of the richest men in the city. She was just Jennifer—a simple girl who loved her family, worked hard, and dreamed of building a beautiful future for herself. People like Daniel belonged to a completely different world. At breakfast the next morning, Jennifer's mother noticed the smile on her face. "Jennifer," she called suspiciously. "Why are you smiling at your food?" Jennifer immediately looked down. "I'm not smiling." "You are." Her mother laughed. "Something happened yesterday." "Nothing happened, Mum." Her younger brother, Michael, joined the conversation. "She's in love!" "Michael!" Jennifer shouted, throwing a small piece of bread at him. Everyone burst into laughter. But beneath her embarrassment, Jennifer couldn't stop thinking about Daniel. Later that afternoon, her phone vibrated. She looked at the screen. Daniel: Good afternoon. I hope you're having a beautiful day. Jennifer's heart skipped. She stared at the message for several seconds before replying. Jennifer: Good afternoon. I'm fine. I hope you're doing well too. The reply came almost immediately. Daniel: I'm better now that I've heard from you. Jennifer covered her face with both hands. "Why am I feeling like this?" she whispered. She didn't know that Daniel was sitting in the back seat of his father's car, smiling at his phone in exactly the same way. --- That evening, Daniel made a decision. He wanted to see Jennifer again. Not at his father's company. Not at an expensive restaurant. Somewhere simple. Somewhere she could be herself. He called her. "Hello?" "Hi, Jennifer." Her voice instantly made him smile. "Daniel?" "Yes. I wanted to ask you something." "What?" "Would you like to go somewhere with me tomorrow?" There was silence. Jennifer's heart began racing. "Where?" "It's a surprise." She laughed nervously. "Daniel, I don't even know you that well." "Then tomorrow is a good opportunity to change that." Jennifer smiled. "Okay." "Okay?" "Yes." "Then I'll pick you up at noon." Jennifer suddenly remembered something. "Wait! You don't have to come to my house." "Why?" "Because..." She hesitated. She didn't want her family to see a wealthy young man arriving in a luxurious car. "Let's meet somewhere instead." Daniel understood. "Alright. You choose the place." After they ended the call, Jennifer stared at her phone. Something about Daniel felt different. He didn't make her feel poor. He didn't make her feel like she was beneath him. He simply made her feel seen. --- The next afternoon, Jennifer arrived at the meeting point wearing a simple blue dress. She checked her reflection on her phone. "Too simple," she whispered. Then she shook her head. "This is me." A black luxury car pulled up beside her. Daniel stepped out. For a moment, Jennifer forgot how to breathe. He was dressed casually, but even in simple clothes, he carried himself with confidence. "You look beautiful," he said. Jennifer smiled shyly. "Thank you." Daniel opened the car door for her. As they drove away, Jennifer noticed something strange. Daniel wasn't taking her to a fancy restaurant. Instead, he drove toward a quiet park outside the busy part of the city. "I thought we were going somewhere special," Jennifer teased. Daniel smiled. "We are." He stopped the car. "This place is special to me." Jennifer looked around. The park was peaceful, with tall trees, flowers, and a small lake reflecting the afternoon sunlight. "Why?" she asked. Daniel's smile disappeared slightly. "My mother used to bring me here when I was younger." Jennifer looked at him carefully. "Where is she now?" Daniel lowered his eyes. "She passed away." Jennifer's heart sank. "I'm sorry." "Thank you." For the first time, Jennifer saw a different side of him. Behind the expensive clothes and wealthy family was simply a young man who had experienced loss. She gently touched his arm. "You must miss her." "I do." They sat quietly beside the lake. After a few moments, Daniel looked at Jennifer. "You know, you're the first person I've brought here in years." Jennifer's eyes widened. "Why me?" Daniel smiled softly. "Because I feel like I can trust you." Jennifer didn't know what to say. Neither of them noticed the dark SUV parked across the road. Inside the vehicle, a man watched them carefully. He picked up his phone. "Sir," he said. Daniel's father answered. "Yes?" "I found your son." "Where?" "He's with the girl." There was a long silence. Then Daniel's father's voice became cold. "I want to know everything about her." The man looked toward Jennifer. "Understood." He ended the call. Back at the park, Jennifer laughed at something Daniel had said. Daniel watched her with a smile. Neither of them knew that their simple friendship had already attracted the attention of someone who wanted to keep them apart. And soon, Jennifer would discover that falling9 in love with Daniel came with a secret she never expected.
