He looked at Mei Ling, and saw that she was as uncertain as he was. But she also seemed hopeful. She believed that he could succeed. And so, he turned to her father. “What is the trial?” he asked. “You must journey to the deepest, darkest part of the forest,” Mei Ling’s father said. “There, you will find a cave. Inside the cave, there is a great treasure, a treasure that only the bravest and most determined can claim. If you bring me that treasure, I will know that you are worthy of my daughter.” Li Ming felt his stomach turn. He knew that the journey into the deepest, darkest part of the forest would be dangerous. But he also knew that he had to try . “I will do it,” he said. And so, Li Ming set out into the forest. He took only a small pack of supplies with him, and he left behind all else. He walked for days, through thick woods and over rugged terrain. The forest was dark and foreboding, and the shadows seemed to stretch out endlessly. But Li Ming kept going, determined to find the cave and the treasure within. Finally, he reached a place where the trees grew so thickly that he could hardly see the sky. He knew he must be getting close. Li Ming continued on, pushing through the dense foliage. And then, suddenly, he came upon a clearing. In the clearing was a cave, just as Mei Ling’s father had described. It looked dark and ominous, but Li Ming steeled himself and stepped inside. He could hear the sound of his own breathing echoing off the walls. The air was thick and heavy, and he felt a sense of dread. But he pushed on, determined to find the treasure and prove himself worthy. He walked deeper and deeper into the cave, until he reached a dead end. At the end of the cave, there was a small pool of water. The water was black and still, and it looked like a bottomless pit. Li Ming h e s i t a t e d, unsure of what to do next. But then, something caught his eye. A glint of light, coming from the bottom of the pool. Li Ming reached out and dipped his hand into the water. The coldness of it stung his skin, but he kept r e a c h i n g. Finally, his fingers closed around something hard and heavy. He pulled it out of the water and held it up to the l i g h t. Li Ming looked at the object in his hand, and his breath caught in his throat. It was a jade stone, p e r f e c t l y cut and polished. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, and it seemed to glow with an inner light. He knew that this must be the t r e a s u r e that Mei Ling’s father had spoken of. He tucked the stone into his pack and turned to leave the cave. But as he did, he felt something brush against his leg. He t u r n e d and saw a small, white rabbit, looking up at him with wide, curious eyes. Li Ming knelt down and reached out to the rabbit. The rabbit hopped forward and nuzzled his hand. Li Ming smiled, feeling a sense of peace and joy that he had not felt in a long time. He reached into his pack and pulled out a handful of dried fruit, which he offered to the rabbit. The rabbit took the fruit and nibbled on it happily. Li Ming felt as if he had made a new friend. He scooped the rabbit up and held it close. It n e s t l e d in his arms, and he felt its warmth against his chest. Li Ming stood up, with the rabbit still c r a d l e d in his arms. He turned to leave the cave, but something stopped him. He felt a sudden wave of exhaustion wash over him, and he staggered. He fell to his knees, and his head began to spin. His vision faded, and the last thing he saw was the rabbit, its eyes shining in the darkness. When he a w o k e, he found himself lying on a soft bed of leaves. He was no longer in the cave, but rather in a clearing in the forest. The rabbit was l y i n g next to him, its head resting on his c h e s t. As Li Ming walked through the forest, the rabbit stayed by his side. Li Ming thought about Mei Ling, and the way her eyes had sparkled when they spoke. He thought about the moments they had s h a r e d, and the feeling of joy he had experienced. But then, he remembered her father's anger and the w a r n i n g he had given. His heart sank, and he wondered if he would ever see Mei Ling again. The rabbit nuzzled his hand, and he looked down at it. In that m o m e n t, he felt a sense of peace wash over him. Just then, Li Ming heard a voice c a l l i n g out. He t u r n e d, and saw a figure standing in the distance. As he got closer, he saw that it was a monk, dressed in o r a n g e robes. The monk l o o k e d at Li Ming and smiled. "You have come far, and you have overcome many obstacles," the monk said. "But your journey is not over yet. There is still a test to be faced." Li Ming's heart started to pound. "What test?" he asked. The monk looked at the rabbit, and then back at Li Ming.
