Chapter Three: The Village of Ashes The nightmare had begun. For one frozen heartbeat, no one moved. The laughter that had filled Moonveil Village only moments before vanished into stunned silence, as though time itself had forgotten to breathe. The villagers stood rooted where they were, unable to believe that the peaceful festival had become a battlefield in the blink of an eye. Then another burning arrow tore through the sky, crashing into the roof of the village granary. The explosion sent sparks flying in every direction, and the spell of disbelief was broken. Chaos erupted. Children screamed as frightened mothers scooped them into their arms and ran without knowing where safety lay. Elderly villagers stumbled through the smoke while fathers grabbed hunting bows and woodcutting axes, desperate to defend their families against an enemy far stronger than themselves. The narrow streets that had been filled with music only moments ago became rivers of panic as flames swallowed one cottage after another. "Protect the children!" someone shouted. "Get everyone to the eastern forest!" "No!" another voice cried. "The forest is surrounded!" Lyra's heart pounded so violently that every beat echoed inside her ears. Thick black smoke burned her eyes as Emma clutched her arm, pulling her away from the blazing square. "Lyra!" Emma shouted above the chaos. "We have to leave!" Before Lyra could answer, a terrified little boy stumbled into her path and fell hard against the ground. He couldn't have been more than six years old. Tears streamed down his soot-covered face as he looked around desperately for his parents. "My... my mother..." he sobbed. Without hesitation, Lyra knelt beside him. "It's all right," she said gently, lifting him into her arms despite the danger closing in around them. "I'll help you find her." Emma stared at her in disbelief. "Lyra, we don't have time!" "We can't leave him." Before either of them could take another step, a deafening roar shook the earth beneath their feet. One of the village gates exploded inward. Splintered wood flew through the air as armored warriors poured into the streets like a crimson tide. Their swords flashed beneath the moonlight, and wherever they passed, terror followed. Houses burned. Market stalls collapsed beneath the flames. The peaceful life Moonveil Village had known for generations was disappearing before Lyra's eyes. At the center of the attack, Elder Rowan stood alone beneath the ancient Moon Tree. The old man's frail body looked painfully small against the advancing soldiers, yet he did not retreat. Instead, he planted his carved staff firmly into the ground. "You shall go no farther," he declared, his weathered voice carrying surprising strength. The Crimson warriors laughed. One stepped forward, twirling his sword carelessly. "Move aside, old man." Rowan's cloudy eyes remained calm. "This village has harmed no one." "That no longer matters." The soldier lunged. Before the blade could reach him, Rowan struck the earth with the end of his staff. A pulse of pale silver light burst outward. The ground trembled violently. Invisible force slammed into the attackers, throwing several warriors backward as though struck by an enormous hammer. Their bodies crashed into burning carts, scattering embers across the square. The villagers gasped. Even Lyra stared in shock. "Elder Rowan..." she whispered. She had lived in the village her entire life. Never once had she seen the old man use such power. Rowan breathed heavily, gripping his staff to remain standing. "So..." one of the Crimson commanders murmured, climbing slowly to his feet. "The rumors were true." He wiped blood from the corner of his mouth before smiling cruelly. "The guardian still lives." Without warning, dozens of warriors rushed the old elder at once. Rowan stood his ground. Silver light gathered around his staff again as he prepared to protect his people, but age had stolen much of his strength. Though every movement carried wisdom earned over decades, he could not match the speed of so many younger opponents. Steel clashed against ancient magic. The battle raged beneath the burning branches of the Moon Tree while terrified villagers fled in every direction. Lyra watched helplessly, every instinct urging her to run to the elder's side. Emma tightened her grip on Lyra's wrist. "Don't!" "But he'll die!" "And if you go, you'll die with him!" Those words struck Lyra like a blade. For the first time in her life, she felt completely powerless. Then, from somewhere beyond the smoke, a deep voice echoed across the battlefield. "Find the girl." The command was calm. Cold. Absolute. Every Crimson warrior immediately stopped attacking the fleeing villagers and turned their attention toward a single person. Lyra. Hundreds of eyes locked onto her at once. A chill raced through her entire body. One commander slowly raised his sword and pointed directly at her. "There she is." "The Moon Omega." The title meant nothing to Lyra. Yet the moment those words left his lips, the expressions on every warrior's face changed. They were no longer looking at an ordinary village girl. They were looking at the prize they had crossed kingdoms to claim.
