Chapter Eight: The Moon Goddess's Tears (Part One)

954 Words
"What... has she become?" Lucien's voice barely rose above a whisper, yet every warrior standing behind him heard the fear hidden beneath those words. The confident smile that had remained on his face throughout the battle slowly disappeared as his crimson eyes remained fixed on the young woman surrounded by silver light. The battlefield had changed. The flames that moments ago had raged uncontrollably now bent away from Lyra as though an invisible force refused to let them touch her. Ash drifted gently around her instead of falling, suspended in the glowing aura that surrounded her body. Even the smoke that filled the air parted quietly, revealing the full crimson moon hanging above the ruined village. Lyra remained kneeling beside Elder Rowan. She could still feel the warmth slowly leaving his hand. Her tears fell silently onto the cracked stones beneath her, each drop glowing faintly before disappearing into the earth. She wanted to cry out, to deny what had happened, to believe he would open his eyes and smile at her once more. Instead, an unbearable emptiness spread through her heart. For the first time since she was a child... She was truly alone. The silver pendant resting against her chest pulsed again. A gentle voice echoed through her mind. Soft. Ancient. Filled with endless sorrow. "Do not fear, child..." Lyra's breathing caught. She looked around instinctively, but no one stood beside her. "The road before you was written long before you were born." "Who's there?" she whispered. The voice answered with quiet warmth. "I have watched over you since your first breath." "You carry the light that cannot be extinguished." A sudden rush of memories flashed before Lyra's eyes. A woman with long silver hair holding a newborn baby beneath a glowing moon. A man covered in blood standing before hundreds of enemies, refusing to step aside. A white wolf howling as a magnificent silver palace collapsed into flames. The images disappeared as quickly as they had come. Lyra gasped, clutching her head. "What... were those?" Before the mysterious voice could answer again, a furious roar shattered the silence. Lucien's fear vanished, replaced by burning hatred. "I don't care what she is!" he shouted, raising his sword toward the sky. "Capture her!" His command echoed across the battlefield. The Crimson warriors hesitated. None of them wanted to step toward the glowing Omega. Not after witnessing the power she had unleashed. Lucien's eyes darkened. "Anyone who retreats dies by my hand." That was enough. Dozens of warriors charged forward together, forcing themselves through their fear. Their boots thundered across the broken streets as they closed the distance, determined to obey their Alpha no matter the cost. Kael's golden eyes narrowed. "Enough." His voice was calm. Yet the authority within it stopped even the wind. He stepped in front of Lyra. Slowly. Deliberately. The long black cloak draped over his shoulders fluttered behind him while his sword reflected the pale moonlight. He stood between Lyra and the approaching soldiers without looking back. "You will not touch her." The nearest warrior snarled and swung his blade. Kael moved so quickly that no one saw the strike. Only the sound. Steel rang through the night. The warrior's sword shattered into dozens of pieces. Before he could even understand what had happened, Kael struck him once with the hilt of his own weapon. The soldier was thrown through the air, crashing into three others before all four slammed into the remains of a burning cottage. Silence spread through the battlefield. Commander Rylan stared in disbelief. "He... didn't even draw blood." Kael slowly lowered his sword. "I warned you." The remaining warriors looked at one another uncertainly. None wished to become the next person standing before the Black Moon Alpha. Lucien's face twisted with fury. "You think one man can stop an entire army?" Kael finally looked directly at him. "I won't be alone." A deep horn echoed from somewhere beyond the forest. Once. Then again. The sound rolled through the mountains like distant thunder. Every warrior on the battlefield turned toward the northern woods. Moments later, hundreds of black-armored riders burst through the trees beneath banners bearing the emblem of a black wolf beneath a silver moon. At their head rode a broad-shouldered man with ash-brown hair tied behind his neck and piercing gray eyes. He carried a massive battle axe across one shoulder as though it weighed nothing. When he reached Kael, he leaped from his horse and dropped to one knee. "My King." Kael nodded once. "Darius." The Beta Commander rose, his eyes immediately sweeping across the burning village. His usually calm expression hardened when he saw the destruction. "So..." he said quietly. "We arrived too late." Behind him, nearly three hundred warriors of the Black Moon Pack spread across the village, helping survivors, pulling trapped villagers from collapsed buildings, and forming a protective line around Kael and Lyra. Hope, which had nearly vanished from Moonveil Village, flickered once more. Lucien watched the reinforcements arrive, his jaw tightening. The battle was no longer as simple as he had planned. Then his gaze drifted back to Lyra. She still knelt beside Elder Rowan, her eyes red from tears, the silver light around her growing brighter with every passing second. Something deep inside him whispered that if he failed to claim her tonight... The balance of the werewolf world would change forever. He slowly smiled again. "Very well, Kael." "You've won this battle." "But the war..." His crimson eyes burned with dangerous promise. "...has only just begun." A cold wind swept through the ruined village, carrying with it the scent of ash, blood, and the first whispers of a destiny that neither Alpha nor Omega could escape.
