Chapter Eight: The Moon Goddess's Tears (Part Two)

825 Words
A cold wind swept through the ruined village, carrying with it the scent of ash, blood, and the first whispers of a destiny that neither Alpha nor Omega could escape. No one spoke. The only sounds that remained were the crackling of dying flames and the faint cries of the wounded drifting through the ruins. The battle had ended, but the silence that followed felt heavier than the fighting itself. Moonveil Village, once filled with laughter and music, had become little more than a field of broken homes and shattered dreams. Lucien Bloodfang stood motionless at the edge of the battlefield. His crimson cloak fluttered behind him as his cold gaze remained fixed on Lyra. He had failed. After years of searching, after crossing mountains and kingdoms in pursuit of the legendary Moon Omega, she now stood under the protection of the one Alpha he had hoped to avoid. Kael Blackthorn. For a long moment, Lucien's expression revealed nothing. Then, slowly, he smiled. It was not the smile of a defeated man. It was the smile of someone already planning his next move. "Our paths will cross again," he said quietly, his voice carrying across the silent village. "And when they do... I won't leave empty-handed." Kael met his gaze without fear. "If you step into my territory again, you won't leave at all." The warning was calm. Simple. Yet every warrior standing nearby understood it was not an empty threat. Lucien laughed softly. "I've always admired your confidence." He raised one hand. The Crimson warriors immediately gathered behind him. "We retreat." Several soldiers looked surprised. "My Alpha..." "We still have enough men to continue fighting." Lucien's smile disappeared. "I gave an order." The soldier immediately lowered his head. "My apologies." Without another word, the Crimson warriors melted into the darkness of the forest, carrying their wounded with them. Within minutes, only the sound of rustling leaves remained. The enemy had gone. But victory brought no joy. Lyra remained kneeling beside Elder Rowan, unable to move. Her tears had stopped falling. She simply stared at the old man's peaceful face, hoping that if she waited long enough, he would wake and tell her this had all been a terrible dream. Emma approached slowly. Her shoulder had been bandaged by one of the Black Moon healers, but her face was streaked with soot and dried tears. She knelt beside Lyra. "...He's gone." Lyra didn't answer. Emma reached for her hand. "He loved you." "He protected you until the very end." Still, Lyra remained silent. Kael watched from several steps away. He had seen death countless times. He had buried warriors who had fought beside him since childhood. He had watched friends fall in battle without shedding a single tear. But something about the sight before him stirred a feeling he had almost forgotten. Grief. Not for Rowan... But for the young woman whose entire world had been destroyed in a single night. Darius stepped beside his king. "My Alpha." Kael didn't look away from Lyra. "Report." "We've searched the entire village." Darius' voice grew quieter. "There are survivors." "But..." He hesitated. "...most of the village is gone." Kael closed his eyes briefly. "Send our healers to every house." "No survivor is to be left behind." "It will be done." As Darius walked away, Kael approached Lyra. He stopped a respectful distance from her. For several moments, he said nothing. Finally, he spoke. "The dead deserve peace." Lyra slowly lifted her head. Her violet eyes were dull with exhaustion. "They deserved to live." Kael had no answer. Because she was right. He crouched beside her. "Your people will be honored." "I give you my word." Lyra looked at him for a long time. "You don't even know them." "No." "But I know what it means to lose people you love." For the first time since they had met, Lyra saw something beyond the cold mask he wore. There was pain hidden in his golden eyes. Old pain. The kind that never truly disappeared. Before she could ask about it, one of the Black Moon healers hurried toward them. "My King!" Kael stood immediately. "What is it?" "The elder..." The healer glanced at Rowan's body. "...he was holding something." He carefully presented a small leather pouch. Its surface was blackened by fire, but the silver thread woven into it remained untouched. Kael accepted it. The pouch felt strangely warm in his hand. When he opened it, a folded piece of aged parchment slipped into his palm. The edges had yellowed with time. Across the front, written in elegant silver ink, were four words. For the Moon Omega. Kael looked at Lyra. "I believe this belongs to you." With trembling fingers, she accepted the letter. Her heartbeat quickened. Whatever Elder Rowan had hidden all these years... Whatever secret he had been waiting to reveal... The answer was now resting in her hands. Slowly... She broke the ancient wax seal.
