Twenty-Five
Sounds penetrated first. The noise of people
coming and going, shoes squeaking on linoleum floors, hushed voices
talking, the blare of an intercom, a mechanical beeping.
Her eyelids felt glued shut and it took an
effort to make them part. She couldn’t see well at first even after
she got them open. A young woman sat in a chair near the bed, but
she jumped up when she saw Kristie move.
“You’re awake,” she said. “I’ll go get Jason.
Man, he’s going to be irritated he wasn’t here. He stayed with you
all last night and this morning. We just switched places a little
while ago so he could see Will.”
“Meg?” The word came out sounding like a
croak. “This…a hospital?”
