Chapter 22: The Broken Bond
Steel rang through the forest.
Kael and Lyra moved as one, their attacks flowing together with effortless precision. Every time Nyra lunged at one of them, the other was already there to intercept.
Even they seemed surprised by it.
Nyra jumped backward, her sharp eyes narrowing.
"Interesting."
She twirled one of her curved daggers.
"I thought the mate bond was broken."
Kael frowned.
"So did I."
Lyra felt it too.
It wasn't whole—not like the stories she had heard growing up—but there was a faint thread connecting their instincts.
It flickered like the last ember of a dying fire.
Seraphine watched silently.
Then realization dawned on her.
"The bond never completely died."
Lyra looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"A true mate bond is created by destiny."
"It can be rejected..."
She glanced at Kael.
"...but destiny is far more stubborn than pride."
---
Nyra laughed.
"How touching."
She suddenly disappeared into the shadows.
Lyra spun, searching desperately.
"Where did she go?"
"Above!" Kael shouted.
Nyra dropped from a tree, both daggers aimed directly at Lyra's back.
Kael didn't hesitate.
He threw himself into the attack.
The blades pierced his shoulder instead.
"Kael!"
He gritted his teeth against the pain and shoved Nyra away.
Blood soaked his shirt.
Lyra caught him before he could fall.
"Why would you do that?"
He managed a weak smile.
"Because..."
He winced.
"...I'm tired of protecting only my pride."
For a moment, Lyra didn't know what to say.
Then anger replaced her shock.
Not anger at Kael.
Anger at everything that had brought them here.
She stood slowly.
The Moonblade shimmered with silver light.
"You've hurt enough people."
She pointed the sword at Nyra.
"It ends now."
---
Across the clearing, Orion and Darius continued their brutal duel.
Darius swung his enormous axe with terrifying force.
Orion blocked the strike with his spear.
The impact cracked the ground beneath them.
"You fight well for a statue," Darius sneered.
Orion's glowing blue eyes remained calm.
"I was carved from stone."
"But my loyalty was forged in love."
With a powerful thrust, Orion knocked the axe from Darius's hands.
The giant general stumbled backward.
For the first time, Orion had gained the advantage.
---
Not far away, Fenrir finally broke the dark chains binding his leg.
With a mighty roar, he leaped toward Varek.
The sorcerer raised a shield of black magic.
Fenrir smashed through it with one swipe of his enormous paw.
The crystal staff shattered.
Varek cried out as he was thrown against a massive oak tree.
His magic flickered and died.
Fenrir stood over him.
"Your life is in my paws."
The sorcerer closed his eyes, expecting death.
Instead...
Fenrir stepped back.
"Go."
Varek stared at him in disbelief.
"You... spare me?"
"Mercy was the gift my Queen gave me."
"I choose to give it to you."
Ashamed, Varek lowered his head and disappeared into the forest.
---
Back at the center of the clearing, Nyra's smile had vanished.
She looked from the defeated Darius to the fleeing Varek.
"You fools."
She turned toward Lyra.
"Then I'll finish this myself."
Dark energy poured from her daggers.
The blades grew twice their original size.
She rushed forward with a scream.
Lyra closed her eyes.
She no longer fought with fear.
She listened.
The wind.
The heartbeat of the forest.
The quiet voice of her wolf.
Now.
Her eyes opened.
Silver light burst from the Moonblade.
She stepped gracefully around Nyra's attack.
One clean strike.
The Moonblade sliced through both cursed daggers.
They shattered into black dust.
Nyra froze.
Her hands were empty.
Lyra rested the glowing blade against her neck.
The assassin looked into Lyra's eyes.
She expected hatred.
She found compassion.
"I'm not going to kill you," Lyra said softly.
Nyra blinked.
"What?"
"You still have a choice."
"Leave this war."
"Choose your own path."
For several long seconds, neither woman moved.
Then...
Nyra slowly dropped to one knee.
"I have served the Shadow King since I was a child."
She lowered her head.
"No one has ever offered me mercy."
Lyra extended her hand.
"Then let today be the first time."
Tears filled Nyra's eyes as she accepted it.
---
High above the battlefield, the Eye of Eclipse trembled.
A small crack appeared across its crimson surface.
Far away, the Shadow King's smile disappeared.
"No..."
He clenched the Blade of Eclipse tightly.
"Hope is weakening the Eye."
He looked toward the Moon Temple in the distance.
"They're getting too close."
For the first time since the war began...
A flicker of uncertainty crossed the Shadow King's face.
And deep within the ancient halls of the Moon Temple, a massive silver bell began to glow on its own...
As though it knew its Queen was finally coming home.
