Chapter 18: The King's Secret
Fenrir's silver-white fur shimmered beneath the moonlight.
The battlefield stood frozen as the giant guardian faced the Shadow King.
For the first time in centuries, the monster was no longer a slave.
He was free.
The Shadow King's crimson eyes narrowed.
"So... you've finally broken my chains."
Fenrir's voice rumbled like distant thunder.
"You never owned me."
"I endured your curse to protect innocent lives."
"You mistook sacrifice for obedience."
The Shadow King's smile faded.
"You've become sentimental."
"No," Fenrir replied.
"I've remembered who I am."
---
Without another word, Fenrir charged.
The earth cracked beneath his massive paws.
The Shadow King met him head-on, raising the Blade of Eclipse.
The two forces collided with a deafening explosion.
Darkness clashed against moonlight.
The shockwave knocked soldiers from both armies off their feet.
Kael shielded Lyra as debris rained around them.
"Are you hurt?" he asked.
She shook her head, though her wound still burned.
"I'm alright."
"You shouldn't even be standing."
Lyra smiled faintly.
"I've survived worse."
Kael lowered his gaze.
"I know."
---
The battle between Fenrir and the Shadow King shook the entire valley.
Fenrir's enormous claws ripped through the earth.
The Shadow King dodged with unnatural speed.
Again and again, the black blade met silver claws.
Neither could gain the advantage.
Orion watched carefully.
"Something isn't right."
Damon frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The Shadow King isn't fighting to win."
"He keeps looking toward the mountains."
Lyra followed Orion's gaze.
Far beyond the battlefield...
A strange black tower stood atop a distant cliff.
She was certain it hadn't been there before.
Its peak disappeared into dark clouds.
"What is that?"
Seraphine gasped.
"The Eclipse Spire."
Orion's expression hardened.
"He built it..."
"But how?"
Seraphine looked horrified.
"While we believed he was laying siege to the temple..."
"He was completing the Spire."
---
The Shadow King suddenly leaped backward.
He laughed as he landed several yards away.
"Very observant."
He raised the Blade of Eclipse toward the sky.
"You've all been fighting the wrong battle."
Black lightning shot from the sword to the distant tower.
The entire valley trembled.
The Eclipse Spire began glowing with dark energy.
A massive circle of black clouds spread across the sky.
The full moon slowly disappeared behind them.
Lyra felt her strength weakening immediately.
"My powers..."
Seraphine's voice trembled.
"The moon is being hidden."
"The Moonborn draw strength from moonlight."
The Shadow King smiled.
"And without it..."
He pointed his blade at Lyra.
"...you are merely human."
---
Fenrir roared and lunged again.
This time, the Shadow King struck first.
The Blade of Eclipse sliced across Fenrir's shoulder.
The great guardian stumbled.
Silver blood splashed across the battlefield.
"No!" Lyra cried.
She tried to summon another shield.
Only a few weak sparks appeared.
The darkness covering the moon was draining her magic.
Kael stepped in front of her.
"Stay behind me."
"You can't defeat him alone."
"I know."
He looked over his shoulder.
"But I'll die trying."
Lyra's eyes widened.
"Kael..."
"I'm done running from my mistakes."
---
Suddenly, Elder Celeste arrived on horseback with a group of Blackwood healers.
She hurried to Lyra's side.
"There you are."
"Elder!"
Celeste gently placed a weathered hand on Lyra's cheek.
"I brought something your mother left behind."
From beneath her cloak, she removed a small crystal vial filled with shimmering silver liquid.
Lyra stared.
"What is it?"
"Moonspring Water."
"The last bottle in existence."
Seraphine smiled.
"Your mother hid it before the kingdom fell."
Celeste nodded.
"She said you would know when to use it."
Lyra accepted the vial carefully.
The liquid glowed warmly in her hand.
Her pendant pulsed in response.
---
Before Lyra could ask another question...
A scream echoed across the battlefield.
Everyone turned.
Fenrir had fallen.
The Shadow King's blade was pressed against the guardian's throat.
The giant wolf struggled to rise but couldn't.
The darkness covering the sky had weakened him as well.
The Shadow King looked toward Lyra.
His crimson eyes gleamed with cruel satisfaction.
"Choose."
He tightened the blade against Fenrir's neck.
"Save yourself..."
The blade drew a thin line of silver blood.
"...or watch your oldest guardian die."
The battlefield fell silent.
Every eye turned toward the Moonborn Queen.
Lyra clutched the crystal vial tightly.
She had only one chance.
One choice.
And whatever she decided...
Would change the course of the war forever.
