Chapter 19: The Moonspring's Blessing
The battlefield held its breath.
Fenrir lay wounded beneath the Shadow King's blade, his silver blood staining the earth. Despite the pain, the great guardian kept his eyes on Lyra.
There was no fear in them.
Only trust.
"Do not choose me, my Queen," Fenrir spoke into her mind.
"The kingdom needs you more than it needs an old guardian."
Tears welled in Lyra's eyes.
"I won't lose you."
The Shadow King smirked.
"You cannot save everyone."
His voice carried across the valley.
"You must learn what every ruler learns eventually."
"Someone always dies."
Lyra looked down at the crystal vial Elder Celeste had given her.
The Moonspring Water shimmered softly, as if waiting.
Her mother's final gift.
She closed her eyes.
"What should I do?"
Inside her heart, her wolf whispered gently.
Don't ask what will save the war.
Ask what your mother would have done.
Lyra smiled through her tears.
She already knew the answer.
---
She uncorked the vial.
The sweet scent of rain and wildflowers filled the air.
Instead of drinking it herself...
She ran toward Fenrir.
"No!" the Shadow King shouted.
He swung the Blade of Eclipse downward.
Kael intercepted him.
With a fierce roar, he shifted into his wolf and threw his full weight against the Shadow King.
The strike knocked the king just far enough away.
"Go!" Kael shouted.
"I'll hold him!"
Lyra reached Fenrir's side.
The giant guardian looked at her in surprise.
"My Queen..."
She poured every last drop of the Moonspring Water onto the black wound across his shoulder.
For one heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then—
A pillar of silver light erupted from Fenrir's body.
The ground shook.
The dark curse left in his wound dissolved like smoke beneath the morning sun.
His breathing steadied.
His strength returned.
The silver markings across his body glowed brilliantly.
Fenrir slowly rose to his feet.
Stronger than before.
The Shadow King's eyes widened.
"You used it..."
"On him?"
Lyra stood proudly beside the guardian.
"My mother taught me that true leaders protect others before themselves."
Fenrir bowed his massive head.
"Then allow me to protect you."
---
The darkness covering the sky suddenly rippled.
A single beam of moonlight broke through the clouds and landed directly upon Lyra.
Seraphine gasped.
"The Moon Goddess has accepted your choice."
More beams pierced the darkness.
Not enough to fully restore the moon...
But enough for Lyra to feel warmth return to her body.
The silver markings on her arms spread across her back, forming delicate glowing patterns.
Orion smiled.
"The Third Seal."
Lyra felt new power awakening inside her.
Not the overwhelming force she'd felt before.
This power was calmer.
Gentler.
It flowed through her like a peaceful river.
---
The Shadow King snarled.
"You think compassion makes you strong?"
"It makes you weak!"
He lifted the Blade of Eclipse high into the air.
Black lightning exploded from the weapon, striking the Eclipse Spire in the distance.
The tower answered with a deafening hum.
Dark energy spread through the valley.
Suddenly, dozens of black portals opened behind the Shadow King's army.
Creatures unlike anything the Blackwood warriors had ever seen stepped through.
They were wolves...
But twisted.
Their fur was made of shadows.
Their eyes were completely black.
"They're not alive," Damon whispered.
"They're not dead either."
Seraphine's face turned pale.
"Shade Wolves."
"The souls of fallen warriors corrupted by dark magic."
The portals continued opening.
Hundreds...
Then thousands...
The battlefield was filling with an army that felt no fear and no pain.
---
Kael stood beside Lyra, breathing heavily.
"We can't fight all of them."
"No," Lyra admitted.
"We can't."
Fenrir lowered his enormous head beside her.
"But perhaps..."
"We don't have to."
He looked toward the frightened Blackwood warriors.
Then toward the Guardian Golems.
Finally, toward the villagers hiding behind the walls.
"A queen does not stand alone."
Lyra understood.
She stepped forward and raised the Moonblade high.
Its silver light spread across the battlefield.
Her voice rang clear and strong.
"Everyone who wishes to protect their home..."
She looked at Blackwood's warriors.
"...stand with me."
Then she looked at the Guardian Golems.
"...stand together."
One by one, Blackwood's warriors raised their weapons.
Damon stepped forward first.
"I stand with the Queen."
Maya picked up a fallen spear.
"So do I."
Elder Celeste smiled and lifted her staff.
The healers followed.
Even the frightened villagers stepped out from hiding, carrying farming tools, axes, and hunting bows.
Kael walked to Lyra's side.
Without a word, he knelt on one knee before her.
The battlefield fell silent.
"My Queen," he said.
"I cannot change my past."
"But if you'll allow it..."
"My sword, my pack, and my life are yours."
Lyra looked down at the Alpha who had once rejected her before everyone.
She saw not pride...
But genuine humility.
Before she could answer—
A thunderous roar echoed from the Eclipse Spire.
The top of the tower split open.
A gigantic eye, glowing crimson like a blood moon, slowly opened in the sky.
It looked down upon the battlefield.
And when it did...
Every living soul felt it.
The real enemy had finally awakened.
