Chapter 6: The Guardian's Trial The clearing fell silent. Even the rogues seemed stunned by the burst of silver energy that had thrown them across the ground. Lyra stared at her trembling hands. Faint strands of silver light still danced around her fingers before fading into the morning air. "I... I don't understand." Lunaris stepped in front of her, his enormous silver form shielding her from the rogues. "Your blood is awakening. The power has slept within you since the day your mother sealed it." Raze slowly rose to his feet, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth. His confident grin had disappeared. "So the legends were true," he muttered. "The Moonborn still exist." His crimson eyes narrowed. "If we can't capture her... we'll kill her." The rogues let out savage growls. Lunaris lifted his head proudly. "You will not touch the last heir." With a thunderous roar, the guardian leaped forward. His silver claws tore through the earth as he slammed into the first wave of rogues. Several wolves were sent flying into the trees. The battle erupted. Lyra watched in disbelief. Lunaris fought like no wolf she had ever seen. Every movement was graceful, every strike powerful enough to send enemies crashing to the ground. But there were too many. More rogues poured from the forest. "Lunaris!" Lyra cried. "Run!" the guardian commanded. "The Moon Temple must be reached before sunset!" "I can't leave you!" "This is my duty." Raze suddenly shifted into his massive black wolf. He was nearly as large as Lunaris. With a deafening snarl, he charged. The two wolves collided with enough force to shake the clearing. Trees splintered. Birds scattered into the sky. Lunaris pushed Raze back, but three other rogues attacked from behind, sinking their teeth into his shoulders. The guardian roared in pain. Lyra's heart pounded. She couldn't just abandon him. Her wolf spoke urgently. Trust him! Tears filled her eyes. "I'm sorry." Gathering every ounce of courage she had, Lyra turned and ran into the forest. Branches whipped against her arms as she followed the silver river deeper into unknown lands. Behind her, the sounds of battle slowly faded. --- Hours passed. The forest became stranger with every step. The trees were taller than castle towers. Silver flowers covered the ground. Glowing butterflies drifted through the air. Everything felt... enchanted. Her exhaustion began catching up with her. She stumbled over a tree root and fell hard. "Ouch." She sat up slowly, rubbing her ankle. "I can't keep running forever." Suddenly, the pendant around her neck glowed. A narrow trail of shimmering moonlight appeared on the forest floor. Lyra blinked. "Is it... showing me the way?" Her wolf sounded excited. Follow it! She rose and continued walking. The glowing path led her to a breathtaking waterfall cascading into a crystal-clear lake. In the center of the lake stood an enormous stone arch covered with ancient symbols. The moment Lyra stepped closer, the symbols began glowing. A calm female voice echoed across the water. "Only one carrying the blood of the Moonborn may enter." The lake rippled. Stepping stones slowly rose from beneath the surface, forming a path toward the arch. Lyra took a cautious step. Nothing happened. She took another. The water remained perfectly still. As she reached the center of the lake, a sudden chill swept over her. The sky darkened. Clouds swallowed the sun. A figure appeared beneath the stone arch. It was a woman dressed in flowing silver robes. Her long white hair danced in the wind. Her glowing silver eyes rested on Lyra. "You've finally come." Lyra's breath caught. "You know me?" The woman smiled warmly. "I have known you since the day you were born." "Who are you?" "I am Seraphine." She placed a hand over her heart. "The last High Priestess of the Moon Temple." Lyra stared in amazement. "I thought everyone here was gone." "They are." A shadow crossed Seraphine's face. "I am only a spirit now." She looked at Lyra with both pride and sadness. "I remained because I made a promise to your mother." Lyra's eyes widened. "You knew her?" "I was her teacher." Emotion tightened Lyra's throat. "So everything Elder Celeste said... it's true?" Seraphine nodded. "You are Princess Lyra of the Moonborn." The words still felt unreal. "I don't feel like a princess." "That is because you have spent your life believing you were nothing." Seraphine stepped closer. "But greatness does not disappear simply because it is hidden." She gently touched Lyra's forehead. Instantly, memories flashed through Lyra's mind. A beautiful palace beneath a glowing moon. Her mother holding her as a baby. Warriors kneeling before them. Then— Fire. Blood. Screams. A man wearing a black crown. Her mother running through the night with infant Lyra in her arms. The vision ended. Lyra collapsed to her knees, gasping for breath. "What... was that?" "The night your kingdom fell," Seraphine whispered. Tears rolled down Lyra's cheeks. "My mother..." "She sacrificed everything so you could live." Seraphine looked toward the distant mountains. "But the man responsible is still alive." Lyra looked up sharply. "Who?" The priestess's expression hardened. "The Shadow King." "The one who ordered the destruction of the Moonborn." A cold wind swept across the lake. "And now that he knows you've awakened..." She met Lyra's eyes. "...he will stop at nothing to finish what he started."
