Chapter 8: The First Lesson
The black parchment trembled in Orion's stone hand before crumbling into ash.
A heavy silence settled over the throne room.
Lyra looked from the scattered ashes to Seraphine.
"He knows I'm here."
Seraphine nodded.
"Yes."
"Can he enter the temple?"
Before the priestess could answer, Orion planted the butt of his silver spear against the marble floor.
"The Moon Temple is protected by ancient magic. No enemy may enter unless the barrier is broken from within or its guardian falls."
Lyra let out a slow breath.
"So... we're safe?"
"For now," Orion replied. "But safety and victory are not the same."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"The Shadow King will not stop searching."
Seraphine folded her hands.
"Which means your training begins today."
Lyra blinked.
"Today?"
"You have already lost eighteen years."
---
Orion led Lyra through a long corridor lined with statues of past Moonborn rulers.
Each statue held a different weapon—a sword, a spear, a bow, twin daggers.
At the end of the hallway stood a pair of enormous silver doors.
When Orion pushed them open, Lyra gasped.
Before her stretched a vast circular arena beneath the open sky.
White stone pillars surrounded the training grounds.
Ancient runes glowed faintly beneath her feet.
"This is the Hall of Trials," Orion said.
"For centuries, every Moonborn ruler trained here."
Lyra swallowed nervously.
"I've never held a sword."
"Then today, you will."
One of the Guardian Golems stepped forward carrying two practice swords.
Orion handed one to Lyra.
It felt heavier than she expected.
She nearly dropped it.
"I don't think this is a good idea."
Orion gave the faintest smile.
"Neither did your mother."
Lyra looked up.
"My mother trained here?"
"Every day."
The thought gave her courage.
She tightened her grip.
"Alright."
Orion raised his own wooden training sword.
"Attack me."
Lyra hesitated.
"You won't hurt me."
"I know."
She charged awkwardly, swinging with all her strength.
Orion sidestepped effortlessly.
She stumbled past him.
Again.
And again.
Every strike missed.
Within minutes, Lyra was breathing hard while Orion hadn't moved more than a few steps.
Frustration burned inside her.
"I'm terrible."
"No."
Orion shook his head.
"You are impatient."
He pointed toward the sword.
"You are trying to fight with anger."
"The Moonborn do not fight that way."
"Then how?"
"They fight with balance."
He motioned toward the arena.
"Close your eyes."
Though confused, Lyra obeyed.
She listened.
The breeze.
The fountains.
The distant songs of birds.
Her own heartbeat.
Then—
Another heartbeat.
Soft.
Steady.
Her wolf.
Can you hear me? her wolf whispered.
"Yes."
Don't swing the sword.
Feel it.
Lyra relaxed her shoulders.
The weapon suddenly felt lighter.
She opened her eyes.
Silver light briefly shimmered along the blade.
Orion nodded approvingly.
"Again."
This time, Lyra stepped forward calmly.
When Orion attacked, she instinctively raised her sword.
Clang!
The blades met.
Orion's glowing eyes widened slightly.
"You blocked it."
Lyra smiled in surprise.
"I didn't even think."
"Exactly."
A proud smile spread across Seraphine's face as she watched from the edge of the arena.
"The Moonborn never relied on strength alone."
"They trusted their instincts."
For the next several hours, Orion guided her through simple movements.
Step.
Turn.
Block.
Breathe.
By sunset, her arms ached.
Her legs trembled.
Sweat soaked her clothes.
But for the first time in her life...
She had successfully disarmed Orion.
It had happened only once.
And only because he allowed it.
Still...
It was enough to make her laugh.
"I actually did it!"
Orion picked up his practice sword.
"You did."
"There is hope."
Lyra grinned.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
---
That evening, Seraphine led Lyra to the temple library.
Thousands of ancient books filled towering shelves.
In the center of the room rested a crystal pedestal.
Upon it lay a single silver-bound book.
"The Book of Moonborn."
As Lyra approached, the book opened by itself.
Its pages turned rapidly until they stopped on a blank sheet.
Slowly, glowing words appeared.
The Heir Has Returned.
Another sentence formed beneath it.
The First Seal Has Broken.
The room shook violently.
Outside, a loud horn echoed across the mountains.
Orion rushed into the library.
"Princess!"
"What happened?"
"The barrier has been attacked."
Lyra's heart raced.
"But you said no one could enter."
"They cannot."
"Yet."
He looked toward the darkening sky.
"The Shadow King's army has arrived."
Lyra ran onto the palace balcony.
Her breath caught.
Beyond the glowing barrier surrounding the Moon Temple stood hundreds of enemy soldiers.
Black banners bearing the symbol of a crimson wolf fluttered in the wind.
Behind them waited massive wolves, armored beasts, and hooded sorcerers.
At the center of the army sat a lone rider on a black horse.
Even from that distance, Lyra could feel his terrifying presence.
The rider slowly lifted his head.
His glowing crimson eyes met hers across the valley.
He smiled.
And raised one hand in greeting.
"The Shadow King..." Lyra whispered.
A deep, chilling voice echoed across the battlefield, carried by the wind itself.
"Welcome home... Princess."
The war had finally found her.
