Chapter 9: The Enemy at the Gate The Shadow King's voice echoed through the valley long after the wind had died. "Welcome home... Princess." Lyra stood frozen on the palace balcony, unable to tear her eyes away from the man on the black horse. He wore dark armor that seemed forged from shadows themselves. A long black cloak billowed behind him, and a silver scar ran across the left side of his face. His crimson eyes glowed with a confidence that sent chills down her spine. He wasn't shouting. He didn't need to. His presence alone commanded the battlefield. Orion stepped in front of Lyra, blocking her view. "Princess, step away from the balcony." She obeyed reluctantly. "He's... terrifying." "He is more dangerous than terrifying," Orion replied. "He has conquered kingdoms that were believed impossible to defeat." Seraphine joined them, her expression grave. "He has been searching for the Moon Temple for nearly two decades." "And now he's found it," Lyra murmured. Below, hundreds of black-armored soldiers spread across the valley. Some erected massive tents while others dragged enormous wooden machines into position. "What are those?" Lyra asked. Orion looked toward the valley. "Siege weapons." "But you said the barrier protects us." "It does." He paused. "They are not preparing for today." "They are preparing for a long war." --- Outside the barrier, the Shadow King dismounted from his horse. His generals gathered around him. One of them, a broad-shouldered man with a scar across his neck, bowed deeply. "My King, shall we attack before dawn?" The Shadow King shook his head. "There is no need." "The barrier will not fall to brute force." "Then how do we enter?" A slow smile spread across the king's face. "We wait." The general frowned. "For what?" "For fear." He looked toward the glowing temple on the mountain. "Fear has opened more gates than any army ever could." --- Inside the Moon Temple, Orion led Lyra to the highest watchtower. From there she could see the entire valley. Campfires from the enemy army burned like countless red stars across the darkness. "There are so many," she whispered. "More than five thousand," Orion answered. Lyra's heart sank. "And there are only four Guardian Golems." "Four Guardians." "And one princess." She laughed weakly. "Those odds don't sound very encouraging." Orion looked at her seriously. "Numbers have never decided the fate of kingdoms." "Then what does?" "Courage." His answer surprised her. She had expected him to say strength. Or magic. Or strategy. Instead... Courage. --- Later that night, Lyra wandered alone through the palace gardens. Sleep refused to come. She found herself standing beneath an enormous silver tree whose glowing leaves shimmered beneath the moonlight. Its trunk was wider than ten men standing side by side. As she touched the bark, the tree pulsed with gentle light. The pendant around her neck warmed. Then... A soft voice spoke. "Little Princess." Lyra looked around. "Who's there?" "Do not be afraid." The voice came from the tree itself. Its branches swayed though there was no wind. "I am the Moon Tree." "You... can talk?" A gentle laugh echoed through the leaves. "I have watched every Moonborn ruler grow beneath my branches." Lyra rested her hand against the glowing trunk. "I don't know what I'm doing." "Neither did your ancestors." "I'm scared." "Good." Lyra blinked. "Good?" "Only fools feel no fear." "The brave simply choose to walk forward despite it." Those words settled deep within her heart. Before she could reply, the ground suddenly trembled. A loud alarm bell rang throughout the temple. Orion's voice echoed across the courtyard. "Everyone to the eastern wall!" Lyra ran. When she reached the wall, she saw dozens of glowing cracks spreading across a section of the magical barrier. Dark energy pulsed against it from outside. The enemy sorcerers stood in a circle, chanting ancient spells. "The barrier!" Lyra cried. "It's weakening," Orion said. "It shouldn't be possible." Suddenly, one of the Guardian Golems collapsed to one knee. Blue light flickered from the cracks in his stone body. "Guardian Elias!" Orion shouted. The golem struggled to stand. "The barrier... is draining... my life force..." Seraphine's face paled. "The Shadow King isn't attacking the shield." "He's attacking the Guardians who sustain it." A deafening crack echoed through the valley. One of the glowing fractures widened. The enemy soldiers erupted into cheers. The Shadow King slowly raised his sword toward the temple. "This is only the beginning," he said calmly. Lyra clenched her fists. She realized then that hiding behind the barrier would never be enough. If she wanted to save the Moon Temple... She would have to become the princess her mother believed she could be. And time was running out.
