Chapter 3 The broken bond

Chapter 3: The Broken Bond The Great Hall was silent except for Lyra's ragged sobs. She lay curled on the cold stone floor, clutching her chest as though she could hold her broken heart together. The pain of the rejection wasn't just emotional—it felt as if someone had ripped away a piece of her soul. Inside her mind, her wolf whimpered. It hurts... "I know," Lyra whispered, tears streaming down her face. "I know." The elders exchanged uneasy glances. No one had expected Alpha Kael to go through with the rejection. Some looked at Lyra with pity, while others simply avoided her gaze. Maya rushed forward and dropped to her knees beside her friend. "Lyra!" She wrapped an arm around her shoulders, glaring at everyone in the room. "Don't just stand there! Help her!" An elderly healer hurried over with a small leather pouch. Kneeling beside Lyra, she pressed a warm herbal paste against her forehead. "The wound isn't physical," the healer said quietly. "Only time can lessen the pain of a broken mate bond." Lyra closed her eyes. Time. Would time ever erase the memory of Kael's cold gray eyes? Would it silence the echo of his words? You are not worthy. Across the hall, Kael stood motionless with his back turned. His fists were clenched so tightly that blood dripped from his palms where his claws had pierced his skin. Damon, his Beta, stepped closer. "You still have time," Damon whispered. "Take back the rejection before the Moon Goddess seals it." Kael's jaw tightened. "I can't." "You don't believe that." "I have no choice." "You have every choice." Kael remained silent. He had felt Lyra's pain as if it were his own. His wolf was raging inside him, slamming against the walls of his mind. Go to her! "No." She's ours! "I said no!" His wolf answered with a furious growl before retreating into silence. For the first time in years, Kael felt completely alone. Meanwhile, Maya helped Lyra to her feet. "We're leaving." No one stopped them. As they stepped outside, the cool night air brushed against Lyra's tear-stained face. The once joyful festival had ended. Families quietly returned to their homes. Children who had been laughing only an hour earlier now stared at her with frightened eyes. She had become the girl the Alpha rejected. The title settled over her like a curse. Back in her tiny cottage near the edge of the forest, Maya helped Lyra change into a simple nightgown. "You should rest." "I don't think I'll ever sleep again." Maya hugged her tightly. "You're stronger than you think." After Maya left, the small house fell into silence. Lyra walked to the window and looked toward the Alpha's mansion, its lights glowing against the dark mountains. "Why?" she whispered. Her wolf answered softly. Maybe he was afraid. "Afraid of me?" No. Afraid of what you might become. Lyra frowned. Before she could ask what that meant, a sharp knock echoed through the cottage. She opened the door. An elderly woman stood outside, cloaked in deep blue robes embroidered with silver crescent moons. Lyra immediately recognized her. Elder Celeste. The oldest seer in the Blackwood Pack. "I've been waiting for this night," the old woman said. Lyra blinked in confusion. "You... have?" Celeste nodded. "May I come in?" Moments later, they sat beside the fireplace. The old seer reached into her cloak and removed a faded parchment sealed with blue wax. "I was told to give this to you when the Alpha rejected you." Lyra stared. "Who told you?" "Your mother." The room seemed to spin. "My mother died when I was six." Celeste smiled sadly. "She knew this day would come." With trembling fingers, Lyra broke the seal. Inside was a single handwritten sentence. When the Alpha breaks your heart, follow the silver river to the Moon Temple. Your true destiny begins there. Beneath the message was a symbol Lyra had never seen before—a silver crescent wrapped around a glowing wolf. "What does this mean?" she asked. Celeste's expression turned solemn. "It means your mother kept the greatest secret in werewolf history." Lyra's heartbeat quickened. "You are not who you believe you are." Outside, thunder rolled across the mountains. Far away, hidden deep within the ancient forest, something ancient stirred awake—as if it had been waiting for Lyra Ashwood to discover the truth. Her rejection had not ended her story. It had only opened the first door to a destiny no one saw coming.
