Chapter 4: The Secret of the Moonborn
The fire crackled softly as Lyra stared at the letter in her trembling hands.
"When the Alpha breaks your heart, follow the silver river to the Moon Temple. Your true destiny begins there."
She read the words again and again, hoping they would somehow change.
"They don't make sense," she whispered.
Across from her, Elder Celeste watched her with gentle eyes.
"They will."
Lyra looked up. "You said my mother knew this would happen. How could she know Alpha Kael would reject me?"
Celeste sighed and folded her weathered hands.
"Because she saw the prophecy long before you were born."
"A prophecy?"
The old seer nodded.
"Your mother was no ordinary she-wolf, Lyra."
A cold chill ran through Lyra.
"My mother was just a healer."
"That is what everyone believed."
Celeste reached into her cloak and withdrew a small silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon. The metal shimmered even in the dim light of the fire.
"This belonged to your mother."
Lyra took it carefully.
The moment her fingers touched the pendant, it grew warm.
A flash of silver light burst from it.
Images flooded her mind.
A magnificent temple stood beneath a glowing full moon.
Warriors dressed in white armor knelt before a woman whose silver eyes shone like stars.
The woman smiled.
She looked exactly like Lyra.
The vision vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
Lyra gasped and dropped the pendant onto the table.
"What... what was that?"
Celeste wasn't surprised.
"The blood of the Moonborn recognizes its own."
"Moonborn?"
The old woman's expression became solemn.
"Long before the first Alpha ruled these lands, there existed a royal bloodline blessed directly by the Moon Goddess."
"They were called the Moonborn."
"They possessed abilities no ordinary wolf could imagine."
Lyra listened without blinking.
"They healed with a touch."
"They could command wolves without speaking."
"They were stronger than Alphas, yet they never ruled through fear."
"So... what happened to them?"
Celeste's face darkened.
"They were hunted."
"Hunted?"
"Power attracts greed."
"Many Alphas feared the Moonborn would one day unite every pack beneath one throne."
"So they destroyed them."
Lyra's stomach twisted.
"They believed every member of the bloodline had been killed."
Silence settled between them.
Finally, Lyra found the courage to ask the question that terrified her most.
"And my mother?"
Celeste smiled sadly.
"She was the last Moonborn princess."
The room seemed to stop spinning.
"No..."
"Yes."
"And you..."
She reached across the table and gently placed a hand over Lyra's.
"...are the last living heir."
Lyra pulled away.
"No. You're mistaken."
"I clean floors."
"I cook."
"I've never even won a sparring match."
"How can I be some lost princess?"
"Because your mother hid your true identity."
"She bound your powers before she died."
"She wanted you to grow up unnoticed."
Lyra remembered something her mother used to say whenever they looked at the moon together.
"One day, my little star, the moon will call your name."
She had always thought it was just a bedtime story.
Now she wasn't so sure.
A sudden knock shattered the silence.
Three sharp knocks.
Celeste's eyes widened.
"They've come sooner than I expected."
"Who?"
Before the old woman could answer, the cottage door burst open.
Five warriors stormed inside.
At their head stood Selene.
She wore black leather armor, a silver sword strapped to her side.
Her blue eyes settled on Lyra with open contempt.
"So it's true," Selene said with a mocking smile.
"The rejected mate is hiding here."
Lyra stood instinctively.
"What do you want?"
Selene stepped closer.
"The Alpha has not ordered your punishment."
"But the pack has already made its decision."
"What decision?"
Selene's smile widened.
"You are no longer welcome in Blackwood."
One of the warriors threw a small cloth bag onto the floor.
Inside were a few coins and a loaf of bread.
"Take these," Selene said coldly.
"By sunrise, you will leave our territory."
"If you remain after dawn..."
Her hand rested on the hilt of her sword.
"...you'll be treated as a rogue."
Lyra's heart sank.
She had lost her mate.
Now she was losing the only home she had ever known.
Selene turned toward the door.
Then she paused.
"Oh... one more thing."
She looked back over her shoulder.
"The Alpha never asked about you."
Those words cut deeper than the rejection itself.
The warriors disappeared into the darkness.
When the door closed, Lyra could no longer hold back her tears.
Celeste rose slowly.
"Perhaps this is exactly as the Moon Goddess intended."
Lyra wiped her eyes.
"I have nowhere to go."
The old seer pointed toward the window.
Beyond the trees, a narrow silver river glowed beneath the moonlight.
"You do now."
Lyra looked at the pendant still lying on the table.
Then at the mysterious letter.
Then toward the river.
For the first time since Kael had rejected her, she felt something stronger than pain.
Hope.
Without another word, she picked up the pendant, slung the small cloth bag over her shoulder, and stepped into the cold night.
She didn't know what waited for her at the Moon Temple.
But deep inside, her wolf whispered with quiet certainty.
This is where our real story begins.
