Chapter 5: The Silver River
The night was unnaturally quiet.
Lyra stood at the edge of the Blackwood Pack territory, the small bundle of belongings resting against her shoulder. Behind her lay the only home she had ever known. Ahead stretched a winding silver river, glowing beneath the full moon exactly as her mother's letter had described.
She took one last look at the distant lights of the Alpha's mansion.
"So this is goodbye," she whispered.
Her wolf stirred inside her.
Don't look back.
Taking a deep breath, Lyra stepped beyond the border stones.
The moment she crossed them, a strange sensation washed over her. It felt as though an invisible chain had fallen away. The air seemed lighter, fresher, and the moon above shone brighter than ever.
She frowned.
"Do you feel that?"
Yes, her wolf answered. We're... free.
---
Miles away, inside the Alpha's mansion, Kael couldn't sleep.
He paced across his office while Beta Damon leaned against the doorway.
"You've worn a hole into the floor," Damon muttered.
Kael ignored him.
Something felt wrong.
The ache in his chest had only grown stronger since the rejection ceremony.
He pressed a hand over his heart.
"It's getting worse."
Damon sighed.
"Because your mate has left the territory."
Kael stopped walking.
"How do you know?"
"I had scouts watching the borders."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"You ordered someone to follow her?"
"I ordered them to make sure she wasn't attacked."
For a brief moment, relief crossed Kael's face.
Then it disappeared.
"Call them back."
"Why?"
"She chose her path."
Damon shook his head in disbelief.
"No, Kael."
"You forced her onto it."
Kael had no reply.
Deep inside, his wolf let out a mournful howl.
---
Lyra continued walking until the first rays of dawn painted the sky gold.
Her feet ached.
Her stomach growled.
She had eaten nothing since the festival.
Finally, she reached a small clearing beside the river.
Towering ancient trees surrounded it, their silver leaves shimmering in the morning breeze.
At the center stood a stone well covered in glowing runes.
As Lyra stepped closer, the pendant around her neck became warm.
The runes lit up.
A soft female voice echoed through the clearing.
"Welcome home, child of the Moon."
Lyra spun around.
"Who's there?"
No one answered.
The voice seemed to come from everywhere at once.
She reached toward the well.
The instant her fingertips brushed the stone, brilliant silver light erupted into the sky.
The ground trembled.
The river began flowing backward.
"What is happening?"
Her wolf sounded just as startled.
I don't know!
Without warning, the water rose into the air, twisting into the shape of a magnificent silver wolf.
Its glowing eyes met Lyra's.
She couldn't move.
The enormous wolf lowered its head respectfully.
Then, in a voice as ancient as the mountains themselves, it spoke.
"At last... the final Moonborn has returned."
Lyra's breath caught.
"You know who I am?"
"I have waited eighteen years for this moment."
The wolf's form shimmered like moonlight on water.
"I am Lunaris, Guardian of the Moon Temple."
"The temple..." Lyra whispered.
"It's real."
"Yes."
The wolf looked toward the dense forest beyond the river.
"But reaching it will not be easy."
"Why?"
"Because others have sensed your awakening."
As if to prove the warning, the peaceful morning shattered.
A chilling howl echoed through the trees.
Then another.
And another.
Lunaris turned sharply.
"Run."
Lyra's heartbeat quickened.
"What was that?"
"Rogues."
Dark figures emerged between the trees.
One...
Five...
Ten...
At least twenty rogue wolves surrounded the clearing.
Their eyes glowed red with hunger.
A scarred man stepped forward, shifting from wolf to human.
A cruel grin spread across his face.
"So the rumors were true."
He looked Lyra up and down.
"The Moonborn princess lives."
Lyra took an uneasy step backward.
"Who are you?"
The rogue laughed.
"My name is Raze."
"I've spent years searching for you."
Her blood ran cold.
"Searching... for me?"
"Alive if possible."
His smile widened.
"But dead will do just fine."
The rogues lunged.
Lyra froze.
She had never fought a battle in her life.
Yet as the first rogue reached her—
The pendant around her neck exploded with silver light.
A powerful wave of energy burst outward.
The attackers were thrown backward as though struck by an invisible force.
Even Lyra stumbled in shock.
She stared at her glowing hands.
"I... I did that?"
Lunaris smiled.
"No, Princess."
"That was only the smallest glimpse of what you are truly capable of."
The rogues slowly climbed back to their feet, their expressions no longer mocking.
Now they looked afraid.
And for the first time, Lyra realized something astonishing.
She wasn't as helpless as she'd always believed.
She had only begun to awaken.
