Chapter 2

It was so good to see a familiar face in this tawdry prison of hormones and ego. Laiken was from the top pack in Florida and had often had playdates with Sérafin as a cub. Laiken had gotten her wolf early, and was a rare white color with pale eyes, even in human form the girl had big pale white eyes and lashes, and the cornrows she rocked? That same white, with burnt sienna skin, a narrow nose and full upper lip. She was wearing an Arcane hoody in feather gray with skinny jeans that hugged her small frame. The girl still looked as timid as ever. “I had no idea you went here Laiken, when did you get in?” Suddenly Sérafin’s eyes narrowed and she asked with no qualms. “Who sent you?” “Nobody sent me Sérafin, your Papá told my Da that the Headmaster was accepting hybrids, we had a meeting about a month ago and the Headmaster told my Da they would never turn away free money and accepted me, twas really weird.” Sérafin motioned for Laiken to have a seat across from her. “ Your Dad probably used my name as a reference, the Headmaster is quite find of me.” Laiken had this look like she wanted to ask a question but thought better of it. “Go ahead Laiken, ya know I could never be upset by ya.” “What does it feel like to embrace both parts of you?” Sérafin smiled gently at her friend. “It's scary at first, but ya get used to it. Da trick is to not be afraid but accept yaself.” Laiken was a vampire-were hybrid, her Ma from a small coven in Clearwater. Both of their fathers had become best friends when learning neither had taken a she-wolf as a mate. Their fates crossed more unethical lines and you add in that Sérafin’s father was the Alpha King, and well, she had taken to protecting Laiken and bringing her up under her wing when she was four and Sérafin eight. They had even gone to school together as Sérafin had talked her father into an exchange program for wolves. She was fearful of the aspect of Laiken being bullied for her small stature. They continued talking for ten minutes before being rudely interrupted again, this time by a tall boy with yellow timed skin. Laiken, who had completely frozen, darted her eyes to the left without moving an inch and Sérafin became suddenly very worried and gently touched one of the hands she had balled up on either side of her half eaten tray. “Please,” she whispered, “not here.” The male ignored her completely and spoke loudly garnering attention. “ I, Alpha Jordan, do not accept Laiken Waters, future Luna of the Whispering Waters pack, as my fated mate.” Laiken groaned and screamed in pain as she fell out of her seat and Sérafin went over to her and gathered the smaller hybrid in her arms. Shakily, she replied in gasps, “ I Laiken Waters,” and rubbed roughly over her heart, “ accept your rejection, Jordan Moon, future Alpha of the Blue Moon pack.” Sérafin just looked dumbfounded as those she could see started laughing and v making sniff comments. “Ha! Serves you right - “Stupid hybrids mucking up the place “ Awe. I wish Jordan was my fated mate - The anger rose up in Sérafin and she could feel the wolf at the surface wanting to break all his bones, and she did form claws and felt her teeth extend, when the sudden smell of sweet peonies went up her nose calming island clearing her mind… Oh no you don't, she thought, we will not take em! He deserves whoever his fahder chooses! Standing up straight, Laiken still at her feet, the male looked at her like she was a ghost. “I Sérafin princesa of da Red Boudreau pack, reject you Jordan Moon, future Alpha of da Blue Moon pack as my fated mate.” The pain had him doubling over and the whispers got louder. “Two hybrids? He must be the most unluckiest Alpha in America - “Ew, back to back though, what are the chances - Jordan was on his knees grabbing at his chest when he replied, “ I Jordan Moon,” through gritted teeth, “ accept your rejection, Sérafin Boudreaux daughter of the Alpha King, princesa and future reina of the Red Boudreaux Pack.” “Perfect, nighty night then.” Sérafin waved as the male fell back as he passed out, being a hybrid meant stronger magicks and bonds, of course this wasn’t her first rejection and in a school full of beasts and cryptids, she knew it wouldn’t be her last. Looking around at all the stunned faces as some of Jordan’ buddies came and carried him to the school nurse. Sérafin shook her head and bent down to help Laiken who looked at her with tears in her eyes. “Come on, let's get you to da nurse too.” Laiken shook her head. “I just want to go back to the dorms, Fin.” “I’ll help you - “No, you go on to class, I think I’ll just rest for the rest of the day.” Sérafin nodded understandingly, watching as her best and only friend limped away still rubbing her chest. Then, turning away, walked both of their unfinished trays to a garbage can that had spots for trays when finished dumping them and left them there. If this was how her days were going to go, she was quite sure she might kill someone. Fortunately, the only thing thrown Sérafin's way was ugly looks but if that's all that was dished out at her today, she could deal with it. It did aggravate Sérafin that she was basically retaking these general courses but the Headmaster had assured her they are a lot more rigorous because most here had already gotten only up to a human high school education. This was apparently like a university or college in the fact that they help you career wise afterwards and to create pathways to wealth outside of a pack, coven or whatever the other things that hide from humans call family.
