Chapter 2 - Damien Blackwood

803 Words
The bass inside The Obsidian Lounge didn’t throb; it purred. The air was thick with the scent of amber, expensive cigars, and the kind of wealth that didn't need to shout. It was a completely different world, insulated from the torrential rain outside. Aria moved through the low-lit space like a ghost in a temple of gold. She had slipped past the velvet ropes by simply walking with the quiet confidence of someone who belonged, blending into a group of laughing models. Her wet jacket was draped over her arm, exposing her simple, thrifted black slip dress. It wasn't couture, but in the dim, crimson lighting, it clung to her like a second skin. She approached the marble bar, her throat burning with the dry ache of betrayal. She needed something strong enough to erase the memory of Jason’s voice. "Whiskey. Neat," she told the bartender, tossing down one of her last remaining large bills. Before the glass could even touch the counter, a heavy, alcohol-soaked hand clamped tightly around her left wrist. "Well, aren't you a pretty little thing to be hiding in the corner," a slurred, arrogant voice murmured near her ear. Aria stiffened. She turned her head to see a young man in an oversized, ridiculously expensive designer jacket. His eyes were bloodshot, his grin loose and entitled. It was Julian Vance, the reckless, trust-fund heir to a massive shipping empire—a face frequently plastered across local tabloid scandals. Behind him, at a circular VIP booth, his entourage laughed, watching the interaction like it was a cheap halftime show. "Let go," Aria said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. Julian chuckled, his grip tightening until her skin pinched. "Come on, sweetheart. Don't be like that. My table is missing a pretty face. You’re coming with me." He gave her arm a hard, dismissive yank, attempting to pull her toward his booth. She didn't scream. She didn't look around for security. Requesting help would mean admitting she was weak. It would mean letting this world crush her the way Jason said it would. Instead, Aria's eyes locked onto a silver platter carried by a passing waiter right next to them. On it sat a crystal tumbler filled with premium, uncut scotch. With her free right hand, she snatched the glass off the tray in one fluid, terrifyingly calm motion. In a split second, she flung the amber liquid directly into Julian’s face. The high-proof alcohol hit his open, bloodshot eyes perfectly. "AAARGH! My eyes! You crazy b***h!" Julian shrieked, instantly releasing her wrist as his hands flew up to his burning face. He stumbled backward, colliding with a velvet barstool and crashing to the floor. At that exact moment, Aria seized his thumb, twisting it outward with a ruthless, biomechanical leverage she had learned from years of handling heavy, stubborn bolts of fabric. The entire upper VIP floor went dead silent. The low thrum of laughter evaporated. Julian’s friends froze mid-drink, their mouths hanging open as the billionaire heir rolled on the pristine floor, groaning and cursing. Aria stood completely still in the center of the vacuum. Her chest rose and fell in a single, steady breath. She reached down, picked up her wet jacket, and casually wiped a stray drop of whiskey off the dark fabric of her sleeve. Up in the elevated, semi-private mezzanine booth, Damien Blackwood sat in the shadows. He had spent the last hour thoroughly bored, swirling a glass of sparkling water while a group of tech executives tried to pitch him a useless digital marketing partnership. He loathed predictability. He loathed the desperate, sycophantic behavior of the people who frequented this lounge. But when the silence hit the room, his dark eyes shifted downward over the glass railing. He didn't see a victim scrambling for safety. He didn't see a woman panicking over the chaos she had just caused. He saw Aria—standing tall amidst the elite crowd, completely unbothered, her posture radiate an absolute, fierce sovereignty. She was a beautiful, chaotic anomaly disrupting his perfectly calculated, sterile environment. Damien leaned forward, his steepled fingers resting against his jaw. A slow, dangerous fascination flared in his chest. Who is that? Down below, Aria caught the weight of a heavy, suffocating gaze from above. She tilted her head up, her eyes clashing with the dark, piercing stare of the man in the mezzanine. Even from the distance, the sheer power radiating from him made her breath catch. He looked like a predator analyzing prey. Realizing the lounge security would be descending on her within seconds, Aria didn't wait. She held his gaze for one final, defiant second, then turned on her heel and vanished into the crowded shadows toward the exit, leaving nothing but the scent of rain and spilled whiskey behind.
