The entire room froze.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Mira stared at the old telephone, her mind struggling to understand what she had just heard.
Her own voice.
A voice recorded before she had ever spoken those words.
“How is that possible?” she whispered.
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Turn off that phone.”
One of his men immediately stepped forward, but Adrian blocked him.
“Don’t.”
Victor looked at him coldly.
“You still don’t understand what you’ve done.”
Mira backed away.
“What am I?”
The question came out softer than she expected.
Victor looked at her.
For a moment, he seemed less like a powerful man and more like someone who had lost something.
“You are my daughter.”
“Then why don’t I remember you?”
Silence.
Finally, Adrian answered.
“Because they erased those memories.”
Mira turned to him.
“Who did?”
Adrian looked at Victor.
“Your father.”
Her stomach dropped.
Victor didn’t deny it.
“When you were eight years old, Project Echo was discovered. Your mother tried to destroy everything. She believed the only way to save you was to make you forget.”
Mira shook her head.
“No… she would never.”
“She did,” Victor said quietly. “But she didn’t erase everything.”
He pointed at the brass key.
“She left a piece of the truth behind.”
Suddenly, the symbol on the key began glowing faintly.
The underground chamber trembled.
A hidden compartment opened inside the wall.
Everyone turned.
Inside was a small black box.
Mira slowly approached it.
“Don’t touch it,” Adrian warned.
But something inside her was pulling her forward.
She opened the box.
Inside was a small voice recorder and a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her mother’s.
With trembling hands, Mira pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the chamber.
“Mira, if you are hearing this, then they have found you.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Mom…”
“I need you to remember something. The person you should fear most is not the one chasing you.”
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“It’s the person who has spent years protecting you.”
Everyone looked at Adrian.
His face went pale.
The recording continued.
“Adrian knows the truth about what happened that night.”
Mira slowly turned toward him.
Adrian looked away.
The trust she had started building with him cracked instantly.
Then the final words from the recording played.
“Mira… your memories were not erased to protect you.”
A long pause.
“They were erased because you were the one who started Project Echo.”
The recorder clicked off.
No one spoke.
Mira stared at the people around her.
The father she never remembered.
The man who saved her but hid the truth.
And the impossible secret about herself.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown Number.
This time, she answered.
A whisper came through the line.
“Now you know why everyone is afraid of you.”
