8 - Before the Entire Pack

2070 Words
Hundreds of wolves stood transfixed under the silver brightness of the full moon. The entire sacred clearing appeared to freeze and hold its breath. The crowd was silent, reverent, so much so that no one talked, no one moved, no one dared to interrupt the scene that was taking place before them. All eyes were fixated on the two people in the middle of the clearing. The improbable couple fate had just tied together. Araceli Geraldi and Pierce Sencio. Araceli could still feel the mate bond pulsating through her, like a second heartbeat, warm and powerful and indisputably alive. With every second that passed, the connection grew stronger, embedding itself in her consciousness, making the fact that much harder to reject. Pierce was her boyfriend. The King Alpha. The strongest wolf in the Silver Moon Alliance. The man every young woman dreamed about, and the very man she herself had admired from afar for years. The realization still felt unreal, like a dream she was afraid to wake from. Yet as Pierce resumed walking toward her beneath the moonlit sky, something stirred inside her chest. Hope bloomed quietly at first before growing stronger, spreading through her with every step that brought him closer. Maybe this was finally her chance. Maybe fate hadn’t forgotten her after all. Maybe everything was about to change. Pierce closed the remaining distance slowly, his expression remaining unreadable even as every step felt heavier than the last. His wolf continued pushing forward with relentless determination, demanding, insisting, repeating the same undeniable truth. Mate. The bond between them was impossible to ignore. No amount of logic could erase it, and no amount of reason could change it. Araceli Geraldi was his mate. The problem wasn’t the bond itself. The problem was everything that came with it. Pierce could already feel the weight of countless eyes upon him: the council, the elders, the visiting Alphas, and the noble families whose influence shaped the balance of power throughout the territories. Every political alliance he had spent years building, every expectation placed upon him, and every responsibility he carried as Alpha King seemed to collide at once, pressing heavily against his shoulders. At the center of it all stood Araceli. The pack’s omega. A servant. An orphan. A young woman with no status, no influence, and no political value. His wolf growled violently at the thought, the reaction irritating him immediately because the wolf cared nothing for politics, alliances, expectations, or power. It had no interest in the calculations that governed his life and position. His wolf cared about only one thing. Her. Pierce’s jaw tightened as tension coiled through him. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Araceli watched him approach, her heart pounding so loudly she barely heard the whispers spreading through the crowd around her. Every instinct urged her forward, toward him, toward the bond, toward the future she had spent years dreaming about. Her wolf stirred softly inside her, happy, hopeful, and trusting, and the feeling nearly brought tears to her eyes. For so long she had been alone, wondering whether anyone would ever choose her. Now fate had answered. Now fate had finally given her someone. The distance between them disappeared completely until Pierce stopped directly in front of her, close enough for her to see every detail of his face, close enough to feel the warmth radiating from his body, and close enough for the mate bond to nearly overwhelm her. The world seemed to fade away around them, and for a brief moment, it felt as though only the two of them existed. Araceli looked up while Pierce looked down, neither speaking as the silence stretched between them and her pulse raced uncontrollably. Say something. Anything. Please. A thousand possibilities flashed through her mind. Maybe he would introduce himself. Maybe he would acknowledge the bond. Maybe he would… “Pierce.” The voice cleaved the moment in two like a knife. Chloe again. The prospective Luna candidate walked on, her face was still, even if her eyes betrayed panic, the raw fear of somebody realising they were losing everything. The throng shuffled their feet, exchanging glances and whispered looks of understanding, unease rippling through them. Everybody saw what was happening. Much more complicated than anyone had imagined. Chloe forced herself to stay cool. After years of practice it was achievable. She'd spent years disguising her feelings behind perfect grins and a well-groomed facade, and she knew how to keep herself in check even while the world threatened to fall apart around her. On the outside she looked calm, but inside she felt a tight knot of panic in her chest. Everything was going, piece by piece, and she could feel it going. She stared at Pierce, then at Araceli, then back to him, and her stomach twisted at the sight. They really clicked. Nobody else could refute it, it couldn't be denied. The evidence was apparent to all of them. But bonds weren't the whole story. Not necessarily. Wolves could veto their mates. It was unusual, and frequently terrible, but it happened, and Pierce had obligations, responsibilities Chloe fully meant to utilise to her advantage. “Pierce.” Her voice softened, carefully controlled and flawlessly measured. “The council is waiting.” Several of the old men stiffened at once. This was no unintentional reminder and everyone there, Pierce included, knew it. For a moment a flicker of struggle crossed his features but then it slipped beneath the mask of control he wore so expertly. Araceli saw this and something inside her began to fracture. Not enough to crush her hope, not yet, but enough for worry to creep silently into the back of her mind, whispering where certainty had been. The crowd watched, waited, the air was nearly oppressive with expectancy. Some wolves plainly supported the link, their faces open and hopeful, others openly appalled. Several of the noble families seemed deeply uncomfortable, exchanging apprehensive glances as the reality of the situation fell over the assembly. The political ramifications were inevitable. An omega turned into Luna. A queen with no parents. The idea was difficult for many to embrace. She could feel their judgement in every lingering gaze, every whispered conversation, their incredulity heavy in the air around her. But none of that mattered, not if Pierce embraced her, not if fate mattered, and not if the relationship was greater than status. She held on to that belief with everything she had, with a desperate need because the alternative was too painful to even think about. Pierce took a long breath, the mate bond pulling at him with an old, powerful force that felt relentless. His instincts were screaming at him. She needed him to claim her, to defend her, to stand by her side. His wolf nearly shouted for it, straining against all the barriers he'd spent years creating. But the reality stayed the same. He wasn't just a wolf acting on instinct. Alpha King. His choices affected more than himself. His decisions affected thousands. His Luna would help shape the future of the Alliance, stand beside him before packs, councils, and kingdoms, and strengthen the stability he had spent years fighting to build and preserve. Araceli wasn’t prepared for that world. She had never been given the opportunity to learn its rules, responsibilities, or expectations. None of it was her fault, but that did nothing to solve the problem standing before him. The crowd waited. The council waited. Chloe waited. Most importantly, Araceli waited. The hopeful look in her eyes struck him harder than he expected. She watched him as though he were the answer to every prayer she had ever whispered, every hope she had carefully protected despite everything life had taken from her. The sight stirred something deeply uncomfortable inside his chest, tightening with every passing second, because he knew exactly what was about to happen. And he knew it would destroy her. Araceli swallowed hard as the quiet between them became deeper with each passing second until it was almost painful. Why didn't he say anything? Why did he seem so conflicted? The bond was true. They knew it. She knew it. Everybody around them knew it. But the doubt in his voice sent a chill through her and worry began to close around her heart. The bright future she had imagined just moments ago felt like a delicate glass pane on the edge of a cliff, one misstep away from shattering. One single move, one incorrect word and it might all fall apart. Now the moonlight was cooler on her skin, and the mob that had swarmed around them moments ago felt oddly far away, as if the world was slowly falling away and she was standing still. Her wolf shifted uneasily beneath the surface, no longer purring with quiet contentment, no longer calm. The restless sensation carried a warning she couldn’t ignore, a growing awareness that something was wrong. Araceli hated that feeling. She hated the knot tightening in her stomach and the dread creeping steadily through her chest as she stood there waiting. Please. Please don’t let this go wrong. Not after everything. Not after eighteen years. Not after finally finding him. Chloe watched Pierce carefully. She knew him well. Not intimately, not in the way she wanted, but well enough to recognize what she was seeing, and it terrified her. Pierce was hesitating. Actually hesitating. The certainty she had always relied on was no longer there, and every passing second stretched her unease tighter. If he hesitated long enough, if he allowed himself to listen to the bond instead of the expectations surrounding him, she might lose. The possibility was unacceptable. Desperation sharpened her voice. “Pierce.” The crowd turned again as the future Luna candidate stepped forward. “The Alliance needs stability.” It was a dangerous statement, carefully chosen and deliberately delivered for everyone listening. Chloe watched the reaction unfold almost immediately. Council members exchanged subtle glances and nodded in quiet agreement, while several members of the noble families looked visibly relieved. She noticed every expression, every shift in posture, and pressed forward before the moment could slip away. “Everyone is watching.” The meaning was obvious. Pierce knew it. The council knew it. The entire pack knew it. This was no longer simply a personal decision. Too many people had become invested in the outcome. Too many eyes were fixed on them. The matter had become political, public, and permanent. Araceli felt her stomach drop. For the first time, she truly understood the obstacle standing before her. It wasn’t Chloe. It wasn’t the council. It wasn’t even the pack. It was power, status, and expectations, the invisible forces shaping every reaction around her. Everything she lacked stood on one side of the divide, while everything Chloe possessed stood on the other. The realization settled heavily in her chest, and the sharp ache it brought hurt far more than she had expected. At last Pierce moved and the audience fell silent. All the wolves watched him, waiting tensely in silence as his gaze fell on Araceli. Their mate link throbbed one last time, powerful and brutally intense, the connection between them surged with enough intensity to make her chest constrict. Araceli held her breath, unable to take her eyes off, a hot war between hope and terror raging inside her. This was the one. That moment that defined everything. Pierce stepped forward until only a small distance remained between them, close enough that only she could hear his first words. “I’m sorry.” The whisper barely reached her ears, yet it shattered something inside her instantly. Fear exploded through her body, cold, sharp, and deeply wrong, sending a wave of dread crashing through her with such force that her stomach dropped. Every muscle locked in place as panic tightened around her chest, a desperate denial rising within her at the meaning behind those words. Anything but those words. The throng around them was hushed, ignorant of what had just happened between them. They waited, their expectation rising, eyes on the center of the gathering. Pierce shifted slightly, facing the crowd, the council and the pack. The weight of thousands of eyes landed on him. Expectation hung thick in the air. Araceli could barely breathe as he raised his voice, preparing to say the words that would change her life forever.
