The first ceremonial drumbeat reverberated over the holy clearing, then another, and another, the steady rhythm spreading across Silver Moon territory like distant thunder. The sound was deep and ancient and appeared to reverberate through the earth itself. Every strike carried centuries of tradition and the sound seemed to reach every corner of the gathered audience.
There was an instant response. The talk died out, the laughter ceased, the nervous energy that had been coursing through the clearing a moment before was stilled in silence. The air was still electric, every face eager, every gaze expectant, but there was something more in it too, a collective reverence that commanded the respect of every wolf there.
It was not a normal celebration. It was sacrosanct. The Moon Blessing Ceremony was one of the most ancient traditions amongst wolves, a ceremony revered by all generations, and kept alive by the hands of time, the importance of this being woven into the very roots of the people and their connection to the Moon Goddess.
It was a night of fate. A night when fates met before the gaze of the stars. The elders told of it with awe, the nite when the Moon Goddess came with her children to their destined mates. The full moon was spectacular over the clearing, the dark sky lighted by the silver light pouring down into the gathering, bathing everything with an ethereal, almost otherworldly glow.
It everything centred around the Moon Stone. Ancient. High. It stuck up out of the earth like a relic of a past age. A surface worn, a delicate silver light, complementing the moonlight above. The stone had everyone mesmerised, many eyes staring at it as murmurs ran through the assemblage and expectation hung thick in the cool evening air.
Araceli glanced at the Moon Stone and did not turn her eyes away from her place at the rear of the assemblage. Her heart pounded in her chest, a furious tattoo that pulsed through her whole body as she stood in the crowd under the moonlit sky.
Tonight, after eighteen years of waiting, she would know. The thought persisted in the back of her mind as she stood among the throng of other recently awakened wolves assembled for the same purpose. Around her, groups huddled together, nervous voices rising and falling in the air. Some tried to mask their anxiety with laughter, others fidgeted or stuck close to family members, finding solace in familiar faces. Hope and dread loomed over the assemblage in equal measure, in strained grins, clutched hands, and watching gaze.
For once Araceli wasn't the only one with that uncertainty hanging over her. People seemed nervous. Hope was on every face. She stared at the faces around her, and a peculiar feeling of calm settled over her chest. It was a weird feeling but a good one, it took some of the weight she had carried for so long. Maybe she wasn’t so alone as she believed. Not tonight, at least.
Elder Tobias ascended the ceremonial platform, immediately attracting the attention of the gathered pack. The oldest of the council members raised his hands and silence swept across the clearing at an alarming rate, the hum of talk that had filled the air only moments before fading away. Hundreds of eyes turned to him, eager for the ceremony to begin under the glow of the sacred moon.
"My fellow wolves."
His voice rose, clear and loud, over the clearing, however old.
"Tonight, beneath the holy moon, we meet to pay tribute to fate."
They listened, the audience, every eye on the elder, as the moonlight silvered the ritual ground. The air crackled with expectancy, every person knowing of the importance of the night.
Perhaps tonight really would be different. Perhaps tonight would finally be her turn.
A nearby girl suddenly screamed, not in fear but in excitement.
"Mate!"
A young warrior forced his way through the crowd. The mob roared. Their eyes met. And they both started crying. There was no mistaking the sheer emotion on their faces, their excitement so open and unguarded it flowed through the gathering around them. Laughter and applause and joyful voices from every side, people celebrating with them, caught up in the import of the occasion.
The action was so real and innocent that even Araceli cried watching it. She stood in the crowd, unable to look away from the pair who seemed to see no one else. A lump grew in her throat. And in that instant everything around them was gone and all that remained was the tie that had brought them together.
Maybe, one day, she'd know something like that too. Maybe, one day, someone would gaze at her like that warrior was looking at his mate now.
Names were called, as wolf after wolf walked forward, and the queue began to move, slowly but surely. With every step Araceli took she felt herself getting closer to her turn, and no matter how hard she tried she could not slow her pulse. Each second felt like it lasted longer than the last, dragging out the anticipation until it was weighing heavy on her chest.
Eventually, there were just a few wolves left. Araceli swallowed, her palms dampening as she tried to fight the tension that was building. The suspense was becoming almost unbearable.
"Relax," she whispered to herself.
It was easier said than done.
She glanced toward the council platform, searching for something to ground her mind, and saw Pierce standing nearby. The Alpha King kept his cool, standing straight and assured despite the rising buzz surrounding him. He was just the same, strong and composed and utterly unshakeable.
His presence soothed the crowd, as usual. Araceli remembered their earlier talk, remembered how he’d talked to her, remembered how he’d known her name, for a moment. A faint smile tickled her lips, then she looked away and dismissed the thought. It wasn't part of tonight, and it wasn't part of all the things going on around her. But despite herself she could not deny the thought stayed for just a little longer.
That was good.
Then more names were called, and more wolves found their partners. The crowd cheered every new bond, enthusiasm rippling through the crowd as family embraced and friends celebrated with the newly matched pairs. The air was thick with expectation and delight, as if the moon had come down from the sky to walk among them and bless the ritual, and it felt amazing.
Then something happened.
Araceli felt a peculiar sensation brushing her skin so lightly she nearly assumed it was her imagination. She scowled, and looked reflexively about, but the feeling had passed as suddenly as it had come. Strange. Maybe it was nerves, pure and simple. The crowd was bigger than normal, the feelings around her greater than before. It was easy to let her imagination fly.
But moments later it happened again, even stronger this time.
Warmth bloomed inside her, at first faint and then developing into something she couldn't ignore. It was a tug, a soft but strong tug, directing her gaze to something she could not see. Yet behind that there was the tiniest whisper – not a sound she could hear but a feeling she could feel down in herself. Something buried deep in her psyche stirred in answer, emerging with quiet conviction.
Araceli's breath slowed.
A odd, yet right feeling clenched her chest tight. Something in her was awakening, deep and nameless and impossible to ignore. Something inside her had slept for years and now, at last, was wakened. The emotion remained, steady and insistent, radiating through her with quiet strength until she could deny it no longer.
"What is that?" she whispered.
No answer came. There was only the feeling itself, growing stronger with each passing moment, building beneath the surface and waiting.
"Araceli Geraldi."
The sound of her name shattered her thoughts like glass, cutting through the noise of the room so thoroughly that everything appeared to halt. Conversations trailed off, hands stilled mid-motion, and the entire kitchen’s focus turned to her. Dozens of eyes simultaneously turned in her direction as the predictable wave of whispers rippled through the gathering. Some voices were amused, some dismissive, and a few just interested to see what would happen next.
Araceli ignored them, or at least tried to. The weight of their attention pressed against her from every direction, making her legs feel weak and her heartbeat pound heavily inside her chest. This was it.
She stepped forward.
The crowd parted for her, and the gap between her and the Moon Stone felt suddenly vast. The little walk appeared to go on and on in front of her, but she pushed herself onwards. Step, another step, another step, closer and the silence, and the eyes of the onlookers followed her every move.
In each step forward the eyes of the room were watching. Araceli never liked being the center of attention. She liked to be part of the surroundings, invisible, unnoticed. But tonight there was nowhere to hide. The silver crystal stood at the center of the assembly, its flawless surface glinting in the light, old patterns glowing faintly across it. The smooth stone was awash in moonlight, the tiny engravings on its face shone with an almost otherworldly clarity. It was gorgeous, interesting and plainly powerful, commanding every eye in silent authority.
Araceli halted, her eyes focused on the glittering surface of the crystal, her hands starting to shake. The hush surrounding her seemed to close in from every side, and she felt the eyes of the people watching, waiting. Elder Tobias gave a single nod.
Her wolf.
The realization struck instantly.
Her wolf was awakening.
Finally, after eighteen years of waiting, after countless lonely nites spent wondering if the day would ever come, she felt her at last. And it was strong and lovely and obviously alive inside her. The connection flooded through her, strong and intense, and Araceli's eyes welled with tears. It felt amazing, complete, like she had found a missing piece of herself that was now sitting exactly where it was supposed to be.
Then she felt another thrill that eclipsed all the rest. Then a perfume. A rich, potent scent that came with an addictive intensity that snatched the oxygen from her lungs and demanded her undivided attention.
The moment it reached her, her entire body froze. Her wolf surged forward, wild, desperate, and utterly certain.
Mate.
The word echoed through her soul with startling force. Araceli's eyes widened, disbelief flashing through her as her breathing turned uneven.
No. Already?
The bond pulled at her relentlessly, demanding her attention and refusing to be ignored. The scent wrapped around her completely, rich and inescapable, drawing her toward someone. Someone nearby. Someone important. Every instinct within her strained toward the source, her wolf responding with an intensity that sent her pulse racing.
Mate.
The word came again, louder and stronger than before, vibrating in every part of her until it was no longer possible to reject it. That knowledge settled inside her, undeniable, absolute, and left her transfixed beneath the bond’s tremendous intensity.
The crowd around her wavered, the ceremony receding until everything else seemed to have disappeared. All that was left was the link between them, the great tug of the relationship that pulled at her. Araceli raised her eyes gently, tracing the invisible thread that she felt pulled through the gathering. She looked for the source of it, her eyes sweeping over the sea of faces, over families, soldiers, council members.
Then she found him.
The moment their connection locked into place, the world seemed to stop.
Pierce Sencio.
The Alpha King.
He stood beside the ceremonial stage, very still, staring directly at her. His face held something she had never seen before. Shock. Shock. Pure. Unadulterated. For a while the bustle of the gathering seemed to fall away under the startling intensity of the tie rising between them.
The aroma thickened at once, a crushing tide that washed through her senses. Her wolf virtually hummed with conviction, reacting before her head could even catch up.
Mate.
The word kept returning, again and again, insistent and irrefutable.
Araceli’s breath caught. Her chest constricted and she stood there, astonishment hitting her like a punch. That was not feasible. This was not happening. No, not that guy. Not Pierce. Not the King Alpha. Not the strongest wolf of Silver Moon Alliance. But it was there, in front of her, undeniable, in the shocked expression frozen on his face.
Yet the bond remained, unshakable, ancient, and absolute. The truth settled over her like moonlight, quiet and undeniable as it wrapped itself around every thought in her mind.
Pierce Sencio was her mate.
For one brief, beautiful moment, hope burst inside her chest with a force that stole her breath. Fate had chosen her. After everything, after years of loneliness, years of ridicule, and years spent believing nobody would ever want her, fate had chosen her. Emotion swelled so suddenly that tears threatened to spill, and her heart felt impossibly full, overflowing with a happiness she had never dared imagine for herself.
Then she noticed something.
Pierce hadn't looked away. Not once. His gaze remained locked on hers, unwavering, because he felt it too. She could see it clearly in his expression, the shock, the realization, and the growing certainty settling over him with each passing second. The bond had reached him as well. There was no mistaking it.
The Alpha King’s entire body had gone rigid, as if the ground under his feet had abruptly moved. The tension around him was tough to hide and the reaction was not unseen. The audience exchanged uneasy glances, a murmur ran through them. They sensed something important just happened. The quiet between Pierce and Araceli was now impossible to ignore and the focus of all at the gathering turned to them. Confusion spread swiftly and questions no one dared to ask openly.
And somewhere among the crowd, a pair of golden eyes widened in horror.
Chloe Olivier.
The color drained from her face, leaving her visibly shaken for the first time all evening. Fear flickered in her eyes, raw and unmistakable, as though something terrible had happened, as though fate itself had turned against her in a way she had never anticipated.
Araceli barely noticed.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't keep her eyes off Pierce. She couldn’t stop feeling the bond that flowed between them. Couldn’t stop hearing that single phrase resonate through every area of her soul.
Mate.
The impossible had happened. The Alpha King was hers. And somehow, judging by the intensity of his gaze and the undeniable awareness in his expression, he seemed to know it too.
