7 - The Impossible Bond

2472 Words
A silence fell on the sacred clearing, although it was far from total. The wolves gathering beneath the moonlight rippled with whispers, amazement, surprise, disbelief moving among them, hundreds of eyes flicking back and forth between Araceli Geraldi and Pierce Sencio. The mood was another story. The Moon Blessing Ceremony had just taken place moments ago, and the holy grounds buzzed with excitement as wolves waited for the blessing of the moon. Celebration and expectation filled the air. Now the air was charged with tension, like a storm about to break, weaving its way through the gathering as doubt fell over the clearing and no one appeared sure what would happen next. Araceli barely noticed any of it. The whispers, the stares, and the growing unease around her faded into the background until they no longer seemed to exist. Her entire world had narrowed to a single person. Pierce. The tie between them throbbed, strong, old and irrefutable. Buddy. Her wolf said the word over and over, as though scared Araceli might somehow forget, but forgetting was not conceivable. Every part of her being was tied to him, drawn to him by something older and more powerful than reason. It was a feeling that overcame her, that grew and grew, beautiful in its terror, scary in its beauty, real in a way that could not be denied. Years of waiting for this moment, of thinking about how it would feel to find her mate, to feel the pull every wolf dreamed of. She had dreamed so many times of the moment when everything would click into place, when the uncanny connection spoken of in legends and murmured about among wolves would be hers. But nothing could have prepared her for this. Never had expectation, never had fancy, never had hopeful dream came near the reality of standing here, feeling the tug of the relationship so breathtakingly close. For she had never dreamed of him. No, not really. Pierce Sencio. The Alpha King, the most powerful wolf in the Silver Moon Alliance, the man admired by every pack under his rule, the man she had quietly admired from afar, and the man who had spoken kindly to her only hours earlier, was her mate. It still seemed unreal, like a dream she was terrified to wake up from. But the tie persisted, solid and sure, a presence that couldn't be ignored even if the truth seemed impossible. It resonated between them with a constant force, binding her to a world she had not yet come to terms with, compelling her to face a truth that would not be dimmed, no matter how fervently her mind sought an alternate explanation. And judging by the expression on Pierce's face, he felt it too. Pierce stood, statue-like, his ears ringing with the beat of his pulse, the clearing seeming to float away, away from him. The sounds around him faded to distant murmurs, subdued till they scarcely registered, as if the universe itself had stepped back and left him alone with one inconceivable fact. The faintest twinge at the fringe of his vision was lost in the enormity of what had just taken place. Mate. The word hammered at his brain, over and over, refusing to be silenced. His wolf had never responded this way. Not once. He had been to so many Moon Blessing Ceremonies over the years, seen wolves find their destined mates and relationships emerge between packs and territory. He'd witnessed the shock and the joy and the overwhelming certainty that came down upon those selected by fate. He had always followed the tradition, believed in it, trusted the old force that directed it. The mating link was one of the oldest and most holy tenets of their kind, a truth no wolf questioned, no power could replicate. Yet never, in all that time, had he imagined fate would choose him. Not tonight. Not here. Not like this. His eyes remained fixed on Araceli. Everything else seemed to blur around her, every other face and every other sound fading into the background until she was the only thing he could truly see. The certainty roaring through him refused to weaken, settling deeper with every passing second as his gaze remained locked on her. The omega, the quiet girl who had spent most of her life unnoticed, the servant everyone ignored, the young woman he had crossed paths with repeatedly over the past few days, whose presence had lingered in his thoughts far longer than it should have. Even now, with the entire clearing gathered around them and countless eyes fixed on the unfolding scene, she was the only thing he could see. Pierce clenched his jaw, every muscle in his body tightening as disbelief crashed through him. No. This couldn't be happening. Not now, when everything was finally beginning to fall into place. Not when alliances depended on stability and the council expected him to choose a Luna soon. Not when so many responsibilities rested on his shoulders and every decision he made carried consequences for the future of the pack. The timing couldn't have been worse, couldn't have been more impossible. Not when Chloe— His thoughts stopped abruptly, the name dissolving before it could fully form, because Chloe wasn't who he was looking at. It was Araceli. Only Araceli. The bond demanded it with a strength he had never known before. It was an irresistible tug, so strong it tightened his chest and made his breathing erratic. His wolf shifted restlessly beneath his skin, reacting to a link as old as it was undeniable. The word came again, louder now, ringing in every corner of his consciousness, sinking deeper with every passing second. For the first time in years, doubt entered the heart of Pierce Sencio, disturbing the cool control he had always had, and finding himself torn between instinct and incredulity. The gathering around him buzzed with whispers. A jolt went through the clearing and the news went from one to another of the gathering, until every face was alive with the low murmur of wonder and conjecture, voices rising from every side. One couldn’t have missed the abrupt change in atmosphere, the tension building as countless eyes remained glued to the scene in front of them. "What just happened?" "Did you see that?" "No way." "It can't be." "Alpha Pierce?" "With her?" Confusion quickly rippled across the gathering. The council members exchanged worrisome glances, the pack elders frowning, their faces growing deeper in trouble. Even the visiting Alphas looked stunned, their attention on the two causing the disturbance. The link between them was tangible, and would be felt by anyone who knew anything about wolf culture and the sacred meaning such links had. The quiet between them said more than words. He didn’t need to explain. The Moon Goddess had told. Nobody knew what to do with what she said. Araceli's breathing remained uneven as she stood there, still able to feel the connection threading through her with startling clarity. With every passing second, it seemed to grow stronger, more tangible, more real. The overwhelming shock that had consumed her moments ago gradually gave way to something else, something far more dangerous because of how desperately she wanted to believe in it. Fragile, beautiful hope unfurled within her chest, warming places she had long ago convinced herself would remain empty. For the first time in her life, fate had chosen her. Not as an omega. Not as a servant. Not as the unwanted orphan everyone pitied. It had chosen her as a mate, as someone worthy of being loved. The thought brought tears to her eyes. She blinked rapidly, trying to compose herself and keep her emotions under control, trying not to embarrass herself in front of hundreds of wolves. Yet her heart refused to listen. It soared with a fierce, trembling joy because despite everything, despite all logic and every reason she had to expect disappointment, Pierce hadn't rejected the bond. Not yet. And that tiny possibility felt enormous. Chloe Olivier could hardly breathe across the clearing. Panic gripped her chest. Her eyes were locked on the sight before her, and she was hit by wave after wave of astonishment. No. No. No. This wasn’t intended to happen. Her nails sank deep into her palms so deep she felt stinging agony shoot through her hands, yet she felt nothing of it. The scenario in front of her played out and panic started to set in her chest tighter with each passing second. This could not be. Pierce's mate should have been her. Maybe not officially. Maybe not by destiny. But by every practical measure, she had always been the obvious choice. She was perfect for him. Their families supported the match. The council supported the match. The pack supported the match. Everyone expected it, and everyone wanted it. For years, she had carefully ensured that expectation remained firmly in place, shaping every opportunity and every advantage in her favor. For years they had taken it for granted, as an unavoidable certainty, that things would be as they expected. But now fate had turned the tables and given everything to an omega, someone that was no one in their eyes. Her eyes on Araceli, fixed, her astonishment morphing into something more uglier. Within her stirred hatred, at first little, but no more than a spark of resentment. But it didn't stay little for long. It swelled steadily, nourished by humiliation, frustration and the horrible reality that stood before her. That feeling expanded through her until it became something darker, colder, far more terrifying. Because Chloe Olivier had never been a good loser, and she wasn't about to start now. Elder Tobias cleared his throat. The sound relieved the tension only a little. “The ceremony must go on,” he muttered, the words forced and strained from him, but no one moved or spoke. When he repeated himself the words seemed to fall over the clearing without effect. The audience began to shuffle and reluctantly and awkwardly they went back to their seats. But the whispering did not cease. It was something out of the ordinary, something no one expected and no one would forget soon. Every member of the pack had seen it. Araceli stood there beside the Moon Stone, not knowing what to do. Her feelings were all confused, and she couldn't tell which was which. Hope and dread and shock and excitement jostled for room in her chest. She was unsteady beneath the weight of them. The air in the clearing had shifted, crackling with expectation and amazement, and she could feel hundreds of eyes still roving back to her despite the elder’s efforts to carry on with the ceremony. Then she saw movement when Pierce took a step forward. All eyes were on him and the audience went quiet again. Another step then another, each one deliberate and unhurried. Araceli’s breath hitched as she saw him approaching toward her. The gap between them began to diminish slowly, steadily, and her heart was racing so hard she could feel it hammering all over her body. The wolves regarded them with rising interest. Nobody dared to say a word. No one dared to interrupt. Everyone realised what this moment meant. The Alpha King was coming to his mate. The possibility felt almost magical, filling her with a sense of wonder she could hardly explain. It was beautiful, the kind of possibility that seemed touched by fate itself, and her wolf practically purred inside her at the thought, responding with unmistakable satisfaction. Mate. The word rang in her and her whole body shivered with hope not with terror. Maybe all was going to change now. Perhaps fate had finally smiled on her after years of loneliness and heartbreak. Perhaps all the misery she had gone through had lead to this moment. To him. For them. She swallowed hard, unable to look away, unable to breathe properly as Pierce kept walking across the clearing. His expression remained unreadable. He wasn't angry. He wasn't cold. Yet he wasn't warm either. He looked thoughtful, conflicted, as though he were battling something inside himself with every step he took. The sight stirred a small thread of worry within her, but she pushed it aside. Surely fate mattered more than doubt. The Moon Goddess had chosen them. The bond was real, the connection undeniable. That had to mean something. Surely it did. "Pierce." The voice shattered the moment. Chloe. The future Luna candidate stepped forward suddenly, her face pale and her eyes filled with desperation. The entire crowd turned toward her, and tension immediately swept back through the clearing. Pierce stopped walking. Only a few yards separated him and Araceli now, yet he had stopped. Something inside her tightened as a strange unease stirred in her chest, subtle and quiet at first, yet impossible to ignore as it slowly began to grow. Chloe approached Pierce, not close enough to touch him but close enough to be noticed, close enough to matter. Close enough to remind everyone exactly who she was. The woman most wolves expected to become Luna. The woman standing between fate and reality. The people held their breath, a tight hush over the assembly, and all eyes were on the situation. Nobody knew what would happen next. Not the council, whose faces had become more and more inscrutable. Not the pack, that waited in nervous suspense. Not even Araceli herself. All she knew was that her heart had become incredibly tender, and one wrong remark would break it. The uncertainty weighed against her chest, each second heavier than the one before it. Pierce looked at Chloe, his gaze lingering for a moment before shifting to Araceli. Then he looked back again. Conflict flashed across his face before disappearing almost immediately, but Araceli saw it. And for the first time since discovering the bond, fear entered her heart. Fate had chosen them, but people still had choices. The bond might be real, yet that didn't guarantee what someone would do with it. The sacred clearing fell completely silent. The air itself seemed suspended as everyone waited, watched, and held their breath. Pierce Sencio inhaled slowly before stepping forward once more. This time, he wasn't moving toward Chloe. Instead, he walked directly toward Araceli. A collective gasp swept through the crowd, and hope exploded inside her chest. He was coming. Finally, her mate was coming to her. Yet the expression in Pierce's eyes made her nervous in a way she couldn't ignore. He didn't look happy. He didn't look relieved. He looked like a man approaching a battlefield rather than the woman fate had chosen for him. And Araceli suddenly realized something terrifying. She had no idea what he was about to say.
