9 - Rejected

The entire world appeared to hold its breath, the sacred glade washed in shimmering light of the full moon. Hundreds of wolves surrounded the area, their eyes on the sight before them. They looked. They sat down. They thought. no one had the heart to speak. No one dared move. The nighttime itself was stuck in time. The future of the Alpha King depended on one decision. Araceli’s heart pounded so violently she thought it might burst from her chest. The sound of it thundered in her ears, drowning out everything else as she stared at Pierce. She couldn’t look away. Couldn’t stop hearing those two words repeating in her mind, over and over, each echo striking harder than the last. Fear spread through her like ice, cold, sharp, and unforgiving as it swept through every part of her. Deep down, she already knew. She had known before he spoke, before the crowd reacted, and before her heart shattered beneath the weight of what was coming. The look in his eyes told her everything she needed to understand without a single word being spoken. The mate bond was real, but it wasn’t enough. Pierce turned toward the crowd, toward the council, the pack, and the future he had spent years building. The silence that settled over the gathering became almost unbearable, pressing against him from every direction as countless eyes remained fixed on him, waiting for his decision. His jaw tightened, and for the briefest moment, uncertainty flickered across his face before he forced it back under control. Inside him, his wolf raged with relentless fury, violent and unyielding as it pushed against every wall he had built around it. It demanded that he stop, demanded that he choose differently, demanded that he claim his mate instead of standing where he was. Pierce ignored it. Because he was the Alpha King, and Alpha Kings made difficult decisions. At least, that was what he told himself. Even as guilt twisted inside his chest, even as Araceli’s hopeful eyes stared into his, and even as every instinct screamed that he was making a mistake, Pierce forced himself to speak. “My fellow wolves.” His voice carried throughout the clearing, strong, steady, and controlled despite the turmoil raging beneath the surface. The crowd listened intently, their attention fixed entirely on him. No one interrupted. No one dared. The gathering remained silent beneath the open sky as Pierce inhaled slowly, drawing in a measured breath before speaking the words that would haunt him for the rest of his life. “The Moon Goddess has revealed a bond.” A murmur spread through the crowd. Everyone already knew that. Everyone had seen it. Araceli felt her hands trembling as the fear inside her continued to grow, cold and relentless. Please. Please don’t do this. Pierce continued speaking, his voice steady and unwavering. “But being Alpha King requires sacrifices.” The first c***k appeared in her heart. It was small, barely noticeable, yet no less devastating. In that moment, she finally understood where this was heading. “No…” The whisper escaped her lips before she could stop it. Nobody heard, or perhaps nobody cared. Pierce’s gaze never left the crowd. It never returned to her. “As ruler of the Silver Moon Alliance, I must place the future of my people above personal desires.” The second c***k came, larger this time, sending pain spreading through her chest. Her breathing grew uneven as she struggled to remain standing. Around them, wolves exchanged uncertain glances. Some seemed confused by the direction of the announcement, while others shifted uncomfortably, already understanding what was coming. Many had clearly realized the truth before she had. And none of them stopped it. Slowly, surely, hope returned to Chloe, flowing through her chest with a peaceful surety that she had been eagerly longing for. Pierce was doing the right thing. He was choosing responsibility. He was choosing reason. He was choosing her. With the realisation, a wave of happiness swept over her. A triumphant smile started to form on her lips, but she quickly choked it back. Not the time to show it now. Not so far. It was still the time, and looks counted. But down deep, where no one could see, victory was already beginning to sprout. Araceli’s wolf whined, the sound resonating into her soul, the pain so raw it nearly had her dropping to her knees. There was something broken in the tie between them, it quivered with a tension she couldn’t explain, and a chilly sense of foreboding sank deep in her chest. Something was off. Badly mistaken. The connection continued pulling her toward Pierce, as constant and undeniable as ever, yet she could feel him moving away. Not physically, but emotionally and spiritually. With every passing moment, he seemed to be choosing distance, choosing separation, choosing rejection. The realization struck her with the force of lightning, stealing the breath from her lungs. “No…” Tears blurred her vision, but she couldn’t look away. She couldn’t stop hoping there was another explanation, some reason she hadn’t seen, some misunderstanding that would make sense of the agony tearing through her. Desperately, she clung to that fragile possibility even as fear tightened around her heart. Then Pierce spoke. “I reject this mate bond.” The words shattered her world. A silence descended on the area so thick it was as if time itself had stopped. Everywhere all sound died, and even the wind seemed to be holding its breath among the trees. No one moved, no one talked, no one dared to make a sound. The shock was so great that the throng looked riveted to the spot, held hostage by what they had just heard and seen. Everyone there knew precisely what went on. In front of the entire pack, neighbouring alphas, the council and the Moon Goddess herself, he turned his back on his companion. He had said it without hesitation, without leaving any opportunity for misinterpretation or for feigning. The refusal echoed throughout the sacred ground, slicing through the stunned silence. It was eternal, unending and irreversible. Araceli felt the blow immediately. A stinging agony surged inside her chest, snatching the oxygen from her lungs and forcing a gasp from her lips. The pain was sudden, merciless, worse than anything she had experienced. As if unseen claws were tearing her soul apart, ripping something asunder, destroying something sacred deep within her. The mate bond screamed in protest, her wolf howled in sorrow and the pain grew until it was almost unbearable. She stumbled backward, trying to keep on her feet. A shriek from her lips and then another. The crowd watched the event unfold, their eyes glued on her suffering but nobody tried to aid. No one moved to intervene and no one exhibited the slightest sign of concern. Surrounded by people, Araceli endured the excruciating suffering alone. Pierce felt the link go and the feeling nearly buckled his knees. The wolf howled with hatred, the fury slamming through him so hard that for the first time in years he was having a hard time controlling himself. A stabbing and obvious pain ran through his body. It pained him too, the rejection. Not as bad as it injured her, never as bad, but enough to leave its mark and remind him exactly what he did. For a time, a quick, sharp regret flashed like a sword. It came out of the blue, threatening to shatter the determination he had spent years establishing. But he buried it just as fast, shoving it down before it could take root. There was no time for regret. was the words had been spoken and the damage was done. Araceli collapsed as the ground came rushing up to meet her. The impact was hardly noticed. Pain ate everything, spreading through her chest and heart until it felt like it had penetrated into the deepest portions of her soul. The pain was too great, too continuous, too all-consuming. Around her, whispers began to ripple through the crowd. Some remained silent, but enough voices rose to be heard, and soon a few of those whispers turned into laughter. “Of course.” “What did she expect?” “She’s an omega.” “The Alpha King would never choose her.” “How embarrassing.” Each word cut deeper than any blade. The murmurs drifted through the gathering, impossible to ignore, and every comment seemed to press against the raw wound already tearing through her. Araceli curled inward on herself, struggling to breathe as the pain threatened to swallow her whole. She focused on drawing in air, on enduring the humiliation crashing over her from every direction, on holding herself together when it felt as though she might break completely. Tears streamed down her face, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop them or hide them anymore. For eighteen years, she had endured loneliness, ridicule, and the constant ache of being unwanted. She had survived every whispered insult, every dismissive glance, and every reminder that she did not belong. Yet somehow, this hurt more than all of it. Because for a shining moment she believed. She had thought that fate had finally picked her, that she mattered, that she was worthy of love and happiness. The hope had been so tangible, so close she let herself accept it without fear. But the Moon Goddess had shown her everything she had ever wanted, and then taken it away in front of everyone. Humiliation and heartbreak rained down on her mercilessly, as she stood there with tears still streaming down her cheeks. Chloe stepped up and had the crowd’s attention immediately. The timing was right, the chance too good to miss. She flowed to Pierce’s side, like if she were dancing, each stride purposeful and full of intent. She was beautiful and poised and definitely victorious, and it was an image that seemed far too staged to be anything but planned. It was deliberate, brutally accurate, devastatingly effective. The symbolism could not have been more obvious. Chloe was standing by Pierce where everyone anticipated her to be. The message passed across the throng without a single word said. Chloe, not Araceli, was Pierce’s choice. The crowd understood. The council was aware. Everybody understood. Araceli saw it too, and something within of her died. Laughter became louder as murmurs swept across the gathering, conveying pity, mockery and judgement wherever they went. Araceli heard all of this. Each insult, each vicious remark, each jeer reached her ears with excruciating clarity, each adding to the shame that seemed to wrap around her like chains. Her face was on fire and she battled the need to vanish, desiring anything that would save her from standing there, under the weight of so many eyes. There was no way out, though. Wherever she turned, eyes were on her, people gazing, not looking away. The whole pack had seen the worst moment of her life, and the thought was a stone in her chest. They stared. They whispered. They made no real attempt to hide their feelings and she knew this was not something that would just disappear with time. It had been there before them all; they would never forget it. Then something odd happened. A strange warmth crept over Araceli’s skin, not the sharp pain of rejection she’d known, nothing like the relationship she’d felt before. But this feeling was something other, ancient and powerful, with a presence that felt astonishingly alive. Frowning, she felt the strange energy going through her body, coursing in her veins, over her chest and out, radiating till every part of her felt as if it had been touched by it. Under her skin pulsed a soft silver shimmer. At first it was so slight it was hardly there, little more than a quick flash under the surface. Then it flared, pulsating softly as the mysterious energy continued to rise. Wolves nearby gasped, their shocked voices rising above the gathering. “What is that?” “Did you see that?” “The light…” Araceli hardly heard them. Her focus was on the feeling that coursed through her body. The energy grew more powerful, warmer with each second. But it wasn’t painful… it was a strange comforting feeling. It was as if something long buried deep inside her was stirring at last, as if some ancient part of her that had slept for years was waking gently. The ache of rejection vanished for a second. It never really went away, but it never really left, either. It grew quieter and more distant, as something else filled its place. Somewhere inside her, a peculiar and subtle but impossible to ignore anticipation stirred, a sense of something unknown just below the surface. The silver light pulsed once, then twice before disappearing. It vanished so quickly that many wondered if they had imagined seeing it at all. But Araceli knew she hadn’t. She had felt it, sensed it deep within herself in a way that left no room for doubt. Whatever it was, whatever had awakened, it was real. Pierce noticed it too. His eyes narrowed as the strange silver glow lingered in his thoughts. For a brief moment, concern surfaced, only to be replaced by confusion. What had that been? He had never seen anything like it, and neither had the elders nor the council. Yet before anyone could question it, Araceli slowly pushed herself off the ground. It was a very sad sight indeed. Tears streamed down her face. Her eyes were vacant and devastated as though everything in her had been torn out. Still she could stand. The gathering grew quiet, all eyes on her watching and waiting. Araceli stared at Pierce one last time. Her eyes were loveless, hopeless, even angerless. There was just pain, raw and terrible, exposed for all to see. The sight hit Pierce harder than he had anticipated, and for the first time all nite a troubling thought crossed his mind as he looked back at her. He wondered if he had made a terrible mistake. A truly terrible mistake. Araceli couldn’t remain there another second. Not after what had happened, not after what everyone had seen. She turned away, her movements slow and unsteady as though the weight of the entire world had settled onto her shoulders. The crowd parted to let her pass, creating a path through the clearing without a single word of protest. Nobody stopped her. Nobody offered comfort. Nobody cared enough to try. As she walked through the sea of wolves, the whispers gradually resumed around her. Quiet at first, then growing bolder. Laughter followed close behind, slipping through the crowd and trailing after her with cruel persistence. The humiliation still burned, but even that pain felt distant compared to the hollow emptiness spreading through her chest. The bond was gone. Her future was gone. Her dreams were gone. Everything she had hoped for, everything she had built her heart around, had been shattered before the eyes of the entire pack, and she had no idea how she was supposed to survive the loss. The full moon hovered high above the clearing in the dark sky, silent and everlasting. Its gentle light flooded the gathering below, unspoiled by the anguish that was going on underneath. It was ancient, mysterious and undisturbed. It seemed to observe from beyond the grasp of earthly pain, as though it already knew something Araceli did not know. Like the story of destiny was not over yet. As though tonight's rejection that broke her heart was just the beginning. And hidden beneath her skin, a faint silver light flickered once more for the briefest moment.
