Chapter 6
The stone walls shuddered as claws raked against them, sparks showering with each strike. The runes burned bright for a heartbeat, then dimmed as cracks spidered through the glowing symbols.
Selena’s chest clenched. The sanctuary wasn’t invincible—it was crumbling.
Kael stood before the tunnel, blade raised, his body rigid with tension. The stranger, crimson eyes gleaming in the flickering firelight, did not move. He only watched, lips curved in a calm, unsettling smile.
“Hundreds,” Kael muttered under his breath. “They brought an army.”
“Not just rogues,” the stranger said softly. “Feel it.”
Selena felt it. The air was wrong—thick, heavy, humming with a presence that scraped against her skin like nails. This wasn’t just wolves. This was something darker. Something that wanted her.
Her wolf snarled inside her. Fight. Fight them all.
The runes shrieked, the sound like metal tearing, and then the tunnel split wide. The first rogues poured through, eyes wild, jaws snapping. Kael met them head-on, his blade flashing, each strike precise and brutal. Blood splattered across the stone floor.
Selena’s claws slid free, her shadows writhing like smoke around her arms. She lunged, slashing at the nearest rogue, shadows striking with her claws, piercing clean through fur and flesh. The wolf collapsed, lifeless, but another took its place instantly.
“Stay close,” Kael barked without looking back.
“Don’t order me,” Selena snarled, ripping through another attacker. Her body moved with terrifying ease, each kill too quick, too natural. Her wolf reveled in it, and the shadows answered her hunger, spilling outward, striking down rogues before she touched them.
“Selena!” Kael’s voice was sharp. “Control it!”
But control was slipping. The shadows pulsed, alive, ecstatic, spreading across the chamber like roots digging into the stone. Every breath came ragged, her chest burning as the power clawed at her insides.
The stranger stepped into the fray at last. He raised his hand, and darkness itself seemed to twist, dragging rogues screaming into a void that opened and shut like the maw of some ancient beast. His expression never changed—calm, collected, as if he were merely guiding the storm rather than fighting it.
Kael snarled, slicing down another wolf. “Stop playing with them, warlock!”
“I am not playing,” the stranger said evenly. His crimson eyes slid to Selena. “I am watching.”
The words made her falter—watching what? Her?
The answer came in the next heartbeat.
A roar shattered the chaos. Deeper, louder, so powerful the chamber shook. The rogues froze, ears flattening. Even Kael staggered under the weight of it.
From the tunnel, a wolf emerged.
Not a wolf. A monster.
It was massive, twice the size of the largest rogue, its fur black as midnight, its eyes glowing the same crimson as the stranger’s. Its maw dripped shadow as much as saliva, and its presence crushed the air from Selena’s lungs.
Her wolf recoiled. Not of this world. Not wolf. Not Moon.
Kael cursed under his breath. “Shadowspawn.”
Selena’s blood ran cold. “What?”
“Creatures born of the dark curse,” Kael spat, his blade raised though his hands trembled. “They shouldn’t exist. Not here.”
The stranger’s voice was calm, almost reverent. “Ah. So the old ones stir again.”
The beast stepped forward, its crimson gaze locking onto Selena. She froze, every muscle screaming. It didn’t look at Kael. It didn’t look at the stranger.
Only her.
Because it knew her.
The rogues scattered from its path, yipping like frightened pups. The beast lowered its head, a rumble vibrating through the stone.
Selena’s shadows writhed wildly, pulling at her skin, tearing to be free. Her wolf howled in her chest. The power wanted to answer the beast. To join it.
“No,” she gasped, clutching her arms. “No, no, no—”
Kael lunged, planting himself between her and the creature. His aura blasted outward, dominance so fierce even the rogues whimpered. “You’ll touch her over my dead body.”
The beast snarled, lunging.
Kael met it with steel, his blade slashing across its muzzle, but the shadowspawn barely flinched. It swatted him aside like a child swats a toy, hurling him across the chamber. He crashed into the stone wall, coughing blood.
“Kael!” Selena screamed, starting toward him—but the beast’s gaze snapped her back. The shadows inside her pulsed violently, answering its call. She staggered, falling to her knees.
The stranger’s voice came, low and sharp, close to her ear though he hadn’t moved. “This is the truth of you, Selena Blackthorne. Shadow answers shadow. Power answers power. Claim it, or it will claim you.”
Her chest heaved. Her vision blurred. The beast roared again, charging.
Selena’s scream ripped from her throat, and the shadows exploded outward.
The chamber drowned in violet-black light. The beast froze mid-stride as spears of shadow impaled its body, pinning it to the stone. Rogues shrieked as tendrils lashed out, striking them down like wheat before the scythe.
Selena’s body shook violently, her veins burning as the power consumed her. Her eyes glowed like twin stars, and when she rose, it was not entirely her standing.
The shadows moved with her. As her. A living storm of teeth and claws.
The shadowspawn writhed, snapping the tendrils one by one, but Selena screamed again, pouring more of herself into the darkness. The chamber trembled. Symbols shattered from the walls.
And then—silence.
The beast fell. Its body melted into a pool of shadow that hissed and vanished into the stone.
The rogues were gone, their howls scattered into the night. Only the three of them remained.
Selena collapsed to her knees, gasping, the last of the shadows curling reluctantly back into her skin. Her hands shook. Her chest burned. She felt hollow—emptied out, scraped raw.
Kael staggered to his feet, wiping blood from his mouth. His storm-blue eyes locked onto her, wide with something between awe and fear.
“What… are you?” he whispered.
Selena shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. “I don’t know.”
The stranger stepped forward, his smile sharp and triumphant. “You are what comes next.”
Selena looked between them—Kael, bruised but unyielding, fear in his eyes but also fire. The stranger, calm, certain, crimson gaze burning with secrets.
And herself.
Not cursed. Not blessed. Something else entirely.
The silence stretched, broken only by Selena’s ragged breaths.
Then, from the distant forest, another howl rose.
Not rogue. Not beast.
A chorus.
A pack.
Kael straightened, his expression hardening. “They know. Every Alpha in these lands will have heard that.”
Selena’s stomach twisted. The whole world would know.
Her exile had been a wound.
But this… this was war.
And she was at its center.
