Chapter 4

"Just asking." His gaze landed on the invitation on the table. "Mr. Walker invited you to the company gala?" "Yes. I'm going as his date." Logan stared at me for several seconds, then burst out laughing. "Claire, you don't have to make up stories like this. Mr. Walker can have any woman he wants. Why would he want a housewife like you?" "You think I'm making it up?" "If you're trying to make me feel threatened, at least pick someone believable. He'd never be interested in you." He trusted my loyalty, and he was just as certain that a man more successful than he was would never choose me. "Did you sleep with her tonight?" His hand paused around his glass. "That's private." "My date is private too, but I was honest with you. It's only fair you do the same." "It's different." "How?" Logan didn't answer. For the first time, the open marriage made him uneasy. He walked slowly into the master bedroom, then looked back once at the invitation before closing the door. He still couldn't believe that his boss might want the wife he considered worthless. Logan sent me a message 10 minutes later. Logan: Don't wear anything too flashy to the gala. I texted Adrian. Claire: I'll go to the gala with you. His reply came a second later. Adrian: I'll pick you up on time. At exactly 7:00 p.m. on the night of the gala, Adrian arrived at my door. I was wearing a dark green backless gown. Admiration flashed in his eyes. He looked at me for a few seconds before opening the car door for me. "If the way I'm looking at you makes you uncomfortable, tell me." "You're already keeping yourself in check." Adrian smiled, and he didn't touch me once on the drive. Only after we entered the ballroom did I take the initiative and loop my arm through his. We spotted Logan immediately. The young assistant beside him was wearing a dark green backless evening gown too, one that showed off her youthful beauty and striking figure. She had her arm looped through Logan's and was gazing up at him with open admiration. Logan basked in her adoration. A smug smile spread across his face. Then he looked up. His eyes landed squarely on me as I walked into the gala on his boss's arm.
