The rain was coming down in sheets, drumming against the windshield of Barnard's car as he sat inside it in the hospital parking lot. Thunder cracked in the distance, followed by flashes of lightning that momentarily lit up the darkened sky. His phone buzzed for what felt like the hundredth time that night. It was Elinor again.
