Chapter 3

810 Words
When I pushed open the dorm door that night, I caught Chloe frantically shoving something into her drawer. The second she was done, she scrambled into her bed and went to sleep. I only caught a split-second glimpse, but if my eyes didn't trick me, what she was hiding was a tube of lipstick, one that retailed for over 1100 dollars, on the brand's official website. My mind flashed back to the transfer records I'd seen in her group chat, and a nasty suspicion began to form in my chest. I sent the screenshot I'd saved to Sandy, and she immediately agreed with my hunch. Less than thirty minutes later, Sandy blew up my phone with back-to-back messages. Sandy: Holy s**t, I just found a massive juicy drama! Sandy: Remember when we were at lunch earlier, someone said they'd seen a rich lady online who looked exactly like Chloe? Sandy: I just spent forever digging, and turns out? It really might be her. Sandy: I tried to join her fan group, but there are two, one for female fans, one for male fans. Sandy: So I had a guy friend of mine join the male one, and guess what? The female group I joined was just normal chit-chat, but the male group sent my friend a link right off the bat! I told Sandy to screenshot everything immediately. That whole night, Sandy kept me updated on every new development in real time. Right after her friend joined the group, Chloe privately added him. The very first messages she sent were shockingly explicit. I thought about the things I'd seen in her locker before, so I told Sandy's friend to ask her out to meet the next day. Bright and early the next morning, Chloe grabbed her textbooks and hurried out of the dorm. Sandy and I locked eyes, then strode straight over to her drawer. We pulled it open, and sure enough, several luxury lipsticks were sitting right there in plain sight. Given the whole poor, hardworking persona she'd sold all of us, there was no way she could afford them. Not long after that, Sandy's friend sent over an update. Chloe had sent him photos of her outfit that day. She was head-to-toe in designer brands, had a full face of flawless makeup, and had cunningly pulled her skirt up to show off her black sheer stockings. But when she left the dorm barely an hour earlier? She'd been wearing a plain T-shirt and beat-up jeans, holding textbooks and saying she was heading to the library. An hour after the meeting, Sandy's friend checked in again. He said everything had been pretty normal, aside from her flirty, suggestive lines, nothing out of the ordinary had actually happened. Sandy told him to keep chatting with Chloe, to see if they could dig up more solid evidence. My gut told me Chloe was way more dangerous than she looked, so I called my dad straight away. "Dad, I need you to help me look into someone." ***** A few days later, our university held its 60th anniversary celebration, and Chloe just so happened to be the host of the gala that night. That same day, Sandy's friend sent over the final breakthrough we'd been waiting for. Chloe finally messed up and gave herself away. Right then, as I sat in the audience, a package landed in my lap. I ripped it open, and a rotting dead rat stared back at me before I could even react. Shrill screams erupted from the students all around me. "Ah, help! It's a rat!" "Who did Sheena piss off? Who would send her a dead rat?" "Haven't you guys heard? She's been ganging up with her roommates to freeze Chloe out. Some do-gooder got sick of what she's doing and decided to teach her a lesson! That's all this is!" Still reeling from the shock, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw my dad had sent over a file holding every single detail of Chloe's life from birth to now. My eyes blew wide in disbelief when I read that she'd grown up in an orphanage. The more I scrolled down, the more the scattered pieces clicked together, and the full truth finally snapped into place. The whole story about working her fingers to the bone to pay for her brother's medical bills was a lie! Even the rich girl persona she'd put on for Sandy's friend was total garbage! Everything had been a carefully laid trap, all set up to snare her victims! I stared daggers at Chloe, preening smugly up on stage, and immediately zipped all the evidence into one file and sent it straight to the anti-fraud center. "Hi, I'd like to report my roommate for fraud. I have already sent all the evidence over to you!"
