Chapter 29

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE The fireballs rained down around the car as we jumped in—the wolves in the backseat first, then Bo and me. Natkaal screeched and slammed into the shadow, buying us time. Thank God the car was still running—Bo took off and nearly ran into a minivan. The car honked at us. “Sorry, dog!” Bo cried as if the driver could hear us. He sailed through a yellow light and took a sharp left off Cherokee Street. The hip restaurants and bars fell away to a quiet residential neighborhood lined with trees. Plumes of flame and smoke followed the car as we sped away. The shadow sped after us, Natkaal on its tail. I fumbled around on the floor for the bag Joyner had given me. I pulled out the wet bundle of dill. The shadow increased its speed. Bo took a sharp left to throw it off.
