The cool, blue-tinted light of the aquarium washed over us, painting everything in a dreamlike glow. Giant manta rays drifted lazily in the massive tank behind Nicholas’s head, their silent flight a stark contrast to the storm raging inside me. Nicholas was talking about some fish fact he read online, and I nodded when I was supposed to, smiled when he looked over, but my head was somewhere else. I couldn’t focus on anything.
