Outside the high school on a dreary late October afternoon, some of the students on their way home have realized something is happening at the far end of the parking lot. Muffled cries rent the air, coming from somewhere behind the big oak tree. They stop to stare. The main door opens and Mr. Gant walks out in an ugly long raincoat. Beside him, a female teacher fusses with her umbrella. A light cold rain has begun to fall. Mr. Gant nudges his companion. They look over where the blonde student known to be a troublemaker chats to an older youth who doesn’t go to the school. The girl smokes a cigarette. It appears they are trying to distract attention from the screams of the young boys being beaten. She begins to kiss her companion in an outrageous display. The stranger’s hands are all over
