Leila knows the police have already searched in all the obvious places for the fugitive John Mafuso. But from her daily chats with his cousin Pauline, she has a few ideas up her sleeve. First of all, she’s gleaned that the twenty-one-year-old is an avid outdoorsman. He loves camping, fishing, and hunting. He also spends a lot of time fixing up old cars and farm machinery. Another intriguing item she’s picked up is that the Mafuso family isn’t only in the construction business, but also in the fishing industry on Lake Erie. The last school bell has rung. This afternoon, Pauline’s again invited her home. Since it’s such a nice sunny day, Leila thinks perhaps she can persuade Pauline to spend some time in the backyard where, on her last visit, she’d noticed three sheds along the rear fence.
