Bessie is beyond terrified. Her whole body shakes in fear. She sits at the table in the kitchen of the Wallet farmhouse, trying to concentrate on her studies while Jason’s mother makes them some tea. Hearing the sobs behind her, Jane quickly puts down the teapot and rushes over to her student and dear friend. Sitting in the wooden chair beside her, she wraps her arms around Bessie, rocking her back and forth. “It’ll be alright,” Jane coos. “They’ll find her.” “You don’t know that,” Bessie whispers. “After all we’ve been through—” “Shsh, sweet girl.” Jane lays her head on top of Bessie’s, feeling her own tears coursing down her cheeks. “We must be brave.” She hears the door open and sees Brian, her husband, standing there with a small basket dangling from his hand, likely from the barn.
