The lunch bell rang a few minutes ago at Ravenspond High School. Miss Nina Shetland, the policewoman acting as a student teacher, loiters at a discreet distance from the locker of Pauline Mafuso, pretending to read her small notebook. Her liaison officer, Detective Pederssen, has a theory that the suspect’s cousin may know where he is, and consequently, where Leila may be held captive. Nina’s grown fond of the brave young girl who offered to help the police capture a dangerous suspect. She’s determined to help rescue her from her kidnapper. Ten minutes later, Pauline appears at her locker, taking out a movie magazine and a lunch box. She heads to the lunchroom and chooses a table by the far window.
